More decades ago than I care to count, my favorite local pizza and sub shop in my neighborhood used Don Pepino pizza sauce, from seemingly huge cans. A few years later, it became available in smaller cans in the local grocery store. I started making my own pizzas as a hungry teenager, using this sauce. it's still my favorite to this day. It's a classic, straightforward pizza sauce, with the tomatoes being the main flavor. It's fantastic for a New York style pizza. Jazz it up a bit with a few spices, and it makes a great pizza of just about any style you can think of - Sicilian, Chicago deep dish, Detroit, Pan, thick crust, bar style, and many more. I've also used it in many recipes that call for a plain tomato sauce. I think it works wonderfully, with a bit more texture than a plain tomato sauce. Make your own pizza with flour yeast water and salt for pennies. Get 2 pies from 4 cups. We have this twice a week with Don Pepinos. Helps during this recession.
