Diagnostic scanners are seriously useful tools to keep on hand. They basically tell you what's up with your car, and they're pretty darn accurate about it too. Takes away a lot of the guessing game and makes dealing with mechanics a whole lot easier. These scanners work with pretty much any car made in the last few decades, which is super handy. I used to have one, and let me tell you, it more than paid for itself. Unfortunately, I left it in my last car when I sold it. The buyer said they'd send it back, but no luck there. Turns out it's all for the best because the new one I got is way better. It's got a bunch more features, a color screen, and it even tells you what the problem is instead of making you search through manuals or the internet. ... show more

    • Easy to use, great diagnostic tool!
This helped me diagnose my car and save a bunch of money doing the fix myself! It was really easy to use as well. Just have to plug it in to the car, turn the key, and scan for codes. In my case I was getting a cylinder 3 misfire and it was an easy fix once the problem area was narrowed down. Having a code scanner around is a big benefit, even if you're not going to try to fix it yourself. That way you can have an idea of what's going on before you bring it to the shop. A simple code reader that can read and clear codes and do a very basic diagnostic without internet or a subscription package. If all you want to do is read a code and possibly reset it after taking a stab at fixing it, this is your device. It's small and light. It works off the vehicle power. There are no batteries or bluetooth connections to establish. This is a very basic and easy to use reader. It's not going to check your vehicle specific transmission modules or anything like that, but it will read and reset basic engine codes. Reads engine codes, reads emissions. Can tell you information about running engine such as how the sensors are working, engine rpm, and engine temperature. Works great.

    • Nice Economy Reader
This device reads codes, offers some information about what the engine computer is seeing, and can clear powertrain codes from the system. It lacks many features of an expensive professional scanner as it is designed for home use. It’s great for someone who wants to know why the “Check Engine” light is on without running to an auto parts store or repair shop. As a retired mechanic, I recommend writing down all the codes before deciding to clear them from memory. That information could be helpful in later diagnosis. The codes indicate problems, but not necessarily bad parts: “guessing” can rapidly get expensive. But so are competent (and incompetent) mechanics. The “code lookup” section only provides the generic title for the different codes, information which is already displayed when reading codes. Since the device powers up as soon as it is plugged in, I disconnect it when not in use to keep from draining the car battery. It did show that two of the oxygen sensors are functioning in my 21-year-old Civic, but could not find the third sensor although the display permits reading five. Good enough: it now has a home in my glove box. Full disclosure: I ordered this OBD2 Scanner Code Reader Diagnostic Scan Tool through the Amazon Vine program.
