  • Really surprising but great Digimon game!
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
I've been anticipating this game since the moment it was announced, delays and all, and I'm not disappointed at all. I'm pretty far into the game and I'll give my impressions of it so far. I'll update this review after finishing the game, but I'm optimistic that my opinion of it will be higher when that happens. So let's get a major point out of the way: this is largely a "visual novel" game. For those unfamiliar, that means it's heavily story-based with a ton of dialogue and text to read/listen to (partially voiced, Japanese only). You'll have some control of who you talk to and where to go, but it'll be through more "point and click" actions and menus. And you'll make significant decisions that impact gameplay and/or story. Speaking of the story, it's surprisingly mature and dark for a Digimon game. Horror and thriller elements abound. The name is relevant, as survival is a huge overtone for the game's theme and story. So in addition to being a visual novel, this is a a SRPG/TRPG (strategy RPG/tactical RPG). There are combat segments to the game where your Digimon fight others on a grid-based area with turn-based play. You have your main partners, which can evolve, and you can "capture" other Digimon in encounters in a Persona or Shin Megami Tensei style, where you speak to the Digimon, answer their questions, and then ask them to join you if you answer well according to their personality. Game as a whole really reminds me of SMT: Devil Survivor, which is a huge plus for me and anyone else who likes that. The graphics aren't AAA, but are still beautiful and stylistic. I really enjoy the characters and the backgrounds, but they may not be everyone's cup of tea. Honestly I really love the game so far, and I recommend anyone on the fence to give it a try. Like I said I'll update this review with my final thoughts, but still. Give this a try! Update: I finished my first playthrough in about 30 hours, and still gotta say this was a really good game. Not perfect, but still great if you're okay with visual novels with gameplay elements. If you don't like visual novels, then watch a little footage of it online first as this might not be for you. Only negative I'll give is that the combat is pretty simplistic and honestly a little too easy, even on the hardest difficulty. It wasn't bad - I've played bad before, but that part could've been better. ... show more

  • Early Release?
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
Received the game 3 days earlier than expected. I've never played a Digimon title before, but I really enjoy tactical RPGs. The visual novel aspect is interesting; some of your choices affect Takuma's (main character) Affinity with the other human characters which can help randomly in battle. Other choices may increase Karma (Wrath, Moral, or Harmony) which effect what Agumon evolves into (I got Tyrannomon) as well as how the story plays out. Not sure if it only effects the ending or other story-related parts. You can also save pretty much anywhere, even before making choices, to make sure you pick the choice you want. Recruiting Digimon can be a hassle, but rather simple. During battle, you can "Talk" to an enemy Digimon, it will say or do something, and you respond back between 4 different answers. A 6-segmented bar appears above the Digimon that will increase or decrease based on your decisions. Two will decrease the bar, and the other two will increase it by one or two. Once it gets halfway, you have the choice of either asking for an item or recruiting it, but attempting to recruit has a percentage. Some will have a higher chance than others (some as low as 16%), but you can retry the battle over and over. Depending on luck, it may take some time to recruit some Champion or higher evolutions. Overall, the game is not perfect, but if you enjoy tactical RPGs, you may enjoy this game, even if you're not a fan of Digimon and find visual novels boring. If reading is not your "cup of tea", then this may not be the title for you. EDIT: There are a few things that I forgot to mention. The voice-over language is only Japanese, however the text is in English. I have noticed quite a few typos/errors early on as well. Not sure if they have patched them out yet, though. And, definitely the most important thing I left out, are the more mature themes. The most constant themes are fear and death. There is also constant swearing throughout, though it is mostly the "D"-word. There's also an occasional "A"-word, and, at least once, the "S"-word. So, if you're an adult getting this for your kid thinking this is another Pokemon kid-friendly game, it is not. I know this is a lot to read, but thanks for taking the time to read my whole review on this game! ... show more
