I don't have much experience with cheaper tools-maybe they'd work just as well; but these are certainly well-made and sturdy. I believe in buying the best tools you can afford: a cheap tool is usually an expensive tool. The trowel comes pretty dull, so get a good file, if you don't already have one, and be ready to sharpen it up. Also, these are not stainless-steel tools: they will rust if not looked after. I bought these tools as a Christmas gift for my wife. She started using them in May when the ground thawed, and now they are covered in rust. The tools look great and feel very sturdy, like they would last a lifetime, however, the protective coating over the metal began peeling the first time she used them and continued to peel and rust. I paid $189 for the 3-piece set, the tongue trowel and the dibber with brass tip. I feel like I've wasted my money. It isn't easy to take advantage of the lifetime guarantee either--can't even find a customer service phone number for the company. Not happy. ... show more

The tools themselves seem like they're of very high quality. Purchased by themselves I would have likely given them 5 stars each. Unfortunately, the gift set packaging didn't end up being worth the additional cost. For starters, the tools were in the box upside-down, as in when you open the cover the handles pointed up. Not a big deal, I simply removed the insert that holds the tools and flipped it 180 degrees. But then I noticed the insert was ripped where it held one of the tools, meaning that it could clang around and hit the tool next to it when it was in shipping. The box was nicked up and scuffed where the loose tool was free to move. Also, in case you didn't notice in the picture, it's just cardboard. Not even the thin, rigid, premium stuff, just plain old cardboard. The box isn't a deal-breaker, but considering the additional cost, a presentation box like this should at least be in tact and properly assembled. Luckily the tools are very attractive, and have a solid feel. This is a gift for an eco-conscious relative who will appreciate that the wood handles come from FSC certified forests. I'm sure she'll love it, I just wish the box was nicer. ... show more
