  • Good solid brush
I am very pleased with this wire wheel. It was cost effective and well made. The wires do not fly off like some wheels do and it is very balanced. I am used to using twisted wire wheels, which are much more aggressive then this one, but this brush seems to hold it's own. The wires seem a little thicker, so it cuts paint and rust off of metal quickly and leaves a smooth surface. I originally intended to use this brush to fill in until I could afford to buy another twisted brush, but it performs so well, I think I will keep it until it wears out. I would defiantly recommend this wire wheel to others. Thanks to Amazon, it came to my door at a lower price then me driving to the store to buy it. ... show more

  • Works for me.
I bought this wire wheel in May 2013 (3 1/2 months ago). I have it mounted on a generic (Chinese) 3/4 HP 3450 RPM buffing machine. I use this maybe once a week to remove rust/paint from car parts/etc... The wheel is well balanced on my machine and does a good job of removing slight to moderate surface rust and has a more usable "wide face". I suspect that most modern machines will accommodate the "wide face". (Do measure.) From my experience a wire wheel such as this; regardless of the machine, will only burnish the really rusty surface. For my purposes, this wheel does an adequate job. Beyond this, a chemical rust remover/converter/encapsulator will be needed. The wheel itself has held together regardless of how much "reasonable" pressure I have applied. For my purposes this wheel was money well spent. ... show more

  • Very Well Made
This a stout wire wheel! It is very heavy. I can't wait to use it.

  • Nice heavy wire wheel
Nice and wide, seems to be a really nice wheel but I would like it better if it had a solid center instead of having a gap inside the wheel where the shaft goes thru. I just like being able to crank on it when installing on the grinder so I know for sure that it's tight and secure.

  • Nice Wire Wheel!
I chose this with some trepidation because a reviewer reported getting one that was badly off balance. But I decided to take a chance and was glad I did. I got the wheel from Amazon today and just for the heck of it, put it on a lawn mower blade balancer. It seemed to balance just fine so then I put it on one end of an 8" Wilton grinder. It runs nice and smooth - smoother than the wheel that came off! No problems and the wide face gives lots of brush surface. One small note: the wheel doesn't look just like the one in the picture. It has a wide plastic yellow flange like the narrower DW4906. I like the flange as it seems to add some side support to the wires. ... show more

  • Last a while and don't throw too many wires
I like these best of all of the wire wheels I've tried. I used these to clean up a lot of rebar, before cutting/bending/welding into things I sell. Rebar is often rusty, and always has a nasty ugly coating that has to come off before working with it These Dewalt wheels last a while for me, and the wires tend to wear down more than get thrown at me. Of course, it does throw some wires... I think they all do... this is, for me, better than the others I've tried. ... show more

  • A++
Fits my Dewalt Bench Grinder perfectly

  • Not quite "standard" width, and that caused me problems
UPDATED 8/28/2012 to 3 stars - see reasons at end This is said to be a 1" wide wire wheel for bench grinders. I thought that 1" was a standard width, but apparently "standard" is not as standard as I thought, as I found out when I tried to put it on my Porter-Cable bench grinder. Tightening the nut down left the wheel spinning freely on the axle, which of course means it's not going to be turned by the grinder's motor. This wheel is too narrow, by around 1/16" or 1/8" - just enough to make it totally incompatible with my grinder. Now you could argue that it's my Porter-Cable that is not standard, and I that is a fair question: which one is the standard, or is there even a standard? But when I put wheels from other vendors on my grinder - for example, a Norton fine grinding wheel - they fit just fine. And maybe the Norton wheel would work on a Dewalt bench grinder, too. The point is, Dewalt COULD have made a wire wheel that would work on my grinder too, just as Norton did, by making it slightly wider where the axle goes through. So I thought, no problem, I'll just go to the hardware store and get a washer. Well, there were problems. First, the 5/8" diameter hole in a washer is actually a bit larger than that, intentionally, for a loose fit, as the hardware store guy pointed out. So when I put that washer on first, then the steel spacer that came with the grinder, then the wheel, then the other steel spacer, the wheel wobbles. It works ok if I put it on last instead (just before the nut), but then the wheel rubs against the wheel housing a little. Next, washers that big are also fairly thick. Ideally I would have something like two shims that would add up to the missing thickness on each side, so that the wheel would be centered in the wheel well. With any wire wheel, there are going to be some wires that stick out just a bit more than the others, and that puts an undue load on the motor. Yes, you can trim them off, but that process could go on forever. Without a washer on the one side, there was substantial drag from these wires hitting the well, and the motor was quite warm by the time I finished. The really silly thing is that DeWalt and Porter-Cable brands are both owned by Black & Decker Corporation! But apparently they operate as separate companies. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS The instructions talk about using eye protection, which is surely a good place to start whenever using the grinder. I use a plastic face shield, which I prefer to goggles, which tend to steam up. It is kind of inexcusable that the instructions don't advise you to put on some tough gloves when using a wire wheel on a bench grinder. I strongly recommend you do. They only go so far in protection, but they do offer SOME protection. MORE INFO The instructions tell you not to run this wheel faster than the specified maximum RPM, but neither Amazon's page, nor the instructions, tell you what that is. On the wheel, it says 4,000 RPM. That is enough for most grinders you are likely to have at home, but without much margin. WRONG PICTURE Amazon shows an image that does not match what I got. What I got looks more like DEWALT DW4904 6-inch Crimped Wire Wheel Brush except an 8-inch version. BOTTOM LINE I wish DeWalt had simply made the wheel a bit wider where the axle runs through it. The wheel seems to be good quality except for this problem, which makes it unusable for me. If you have a DeWalt bench grinder, it may work for you, although I have not tested it and don't know for sure. Two stars means "I don't like it" on Amazon. Dewalt could have made this wheel 1/8" thicker where the axle goes through and it would have been compatible with my grinder (and probably many others as well). It would probably not have cost more to do that. Apparently they did not test the wheel with other brand grinders, as I think they should. I am returning this and trying another brand. If I find that that other brand (one from a company that does not make grinders as far as I know) also does not work, I'll update this review. UPDATE 8/28/12 In the comments to this review, "e-grunt" suggested that I go back to the hardware store and look for other washers. Although I did not find any marked like he said, I did find two washers that fit over the axle of my grinder - one that did, and one that did with a little filing. These two washers were less thick than the first one I tried, which was much to thick to be a solution. Placing the thin one first, then the grinder's stabilizing disc, then the wire wheel, then the other stabilizing disc, then the nut, did a reasonable job of centering the wheel compared to using no washers. It at least made it usable. I will try the other washer - which is slightly thicker - next, to reduce rubbing. It is also possible to reduce rubbing by clipping off some of the crimped wires. It should not be necessary to use washers or modify the wheel to make it work - wheels from other third-party vendors do work fine on my grinder without washers and modifications, and after all, DeWalt and Porter-Cable are now the same company. However, I cannot find another wire wheel works on my grinder, and with these modifications, at least I have a solution, sort of. Therefore, I am upgrading my review from two stars ("I don't like it") to three stars ("It's ok"), and I am keeping the product instead of returning it. ... show more
