  • Feature Rich. Future Proof. But Pricey.
For a number of reasons, I decided I needed a new AV Receiver. My primary motivation was to move from 5.1 to 7.1 and up. I wanted something that already had the established standards and would be 8k ready. To get all of that , I read the reviews and it came down to Denon or Onkyo (yes I know there are even pricier and more esoteric products). This one had ample 8k HDMI (2.1 connections), several optical / coax digital inputs, phono input, sub outs, on screen display, and speaker calibration (Audyssey mic included). It has discrete line level inputs but no composite video. Yes, it includes all the variations for Dolby (Vision, Atmos, etc), DTS (X, etc), DIRAC compatible, compatible audio streaming services, etc. Check out the specs at one of the online services. The setup was a breeze with TV/onscreen prompts for general setup as well a room / speaker tuning. The remote is ok, sleak and well laid out. I ran the tuning setup for my 5.1 and will add 2 more speakers and rerun in the next week I think the calibration process is easy enough, but be sure to follow the prompts on screen about where and how far away to place the testing/calibration mic. It does have a manual calibration/tuning process, so if you know what you want already, just jump to that menu section. I'll note that I had this in my cart for a week trying to decide to buy, and then 2 days before Amazon's big sale event it went on sale ($200 off), but on the event day (July 10-11) it went back up! Kinda disappointed in that. Luckily, I got it when it first went on sale. Bottom Line: Do you research - be sure if you really need all the bells and whistles and the associated price, and if you want to jump ahead a bit and get the current cutting edge standards. These things seem to change every few years. One thing to note, the unit does have an "eco" mode (not sure how that works exactly) but it runs Warm and produces a fair amount of heat overall. ... show more

  • Beautiful sound, one minor issue
Stunning sound and easy setup, really a nice piece of equipment. I do recommend it, and have had great customer support on my only issue.... Plugging my FIOS One (4K on a few channels , very nice) cable directly into the receiver, the preferred usage, gives me a double click in the speaker relays in the unit every time I change channels on the Verizon remote/verizon app..and when I fast forward or rewind. Lots of troubleshooting with tech at Denon and best we could do was run the cable directly to my LG CX. Now it only clicks when I fast forward or reverse the show, but even with eARC I lose the nice display from the info button. Not a deal breaker because I can live with it. I even ran through a new unit hoping it was a one off. Still give it 5 stars and hoping for an eventual solution. Issue resolved. If you have FIOS One do NOT use the DVR unit plugged into your Denon. Use a FIOS mini unit and move the main box to any other room. Verizon says your home does not care which room has the actual DVR. Thanks to Denon support through this. Getting this resolved took this unit to near perfect. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Impressive
Glad I went with the X3800H vs the lesser models - simply for the Audyssey MultEQ XT32 calibration with my 7.1.2 speaker setup. It did a great job of room correction, much better than my previous Sony. I might upgrade to Dirac some day, but for now I don't have a huge need to pay the additional $$ for the license; XT32 is good enough for me so far. And if I want to get some rear Atmos speakers later, I can add on a cheap 100w 2-channel amp through the receiver preamp; as this receiver will run 11 channels but only has the built in amplifier for 9 channels. And this thing can carry up to 4 subwoofers - seems overkill as I'll probably never have that many but I could see myself running 2 subs some day. As for the rest of the receiver - great specs all around. Has all the current bells and whistles needed for a modern home theater experience. Power is good, and the sound quality is great. HDMI switching has no issues with the current firmware. The biggest seller for Denon to me though is the Dynamic Volume control - Youtube TV commercials & 'zen' moments blast your eardrums out if the receiver doesn't have that capability. It works great even on the Light setting. ... show more

  • It just works
Been doing home audio since the 80's these things are never what I'd call a joy to set up. They used to be ok, but have gotten a lot worse over the last 20 years. You buy it, it's fun in the beginning then you just want to watch movies. Fiddling with levels to hear text, stuck in a werid spot, confusing menus etc. Zero hdmi issues. No heat. Stays cool. This is the first receiver i've had in a while where i spent almost no time setting it up, and it just works, EVERY TIME. Denon has polish and it sounds great. It has basically all the main features. Time will tell if they keep adding software updates, but for now i'm happy. It's a pretty decent warranty too. I looked at an onkyo and it was a mess inside. This is clean and well put togehter. Try it out, definably consider buying on amazon it's easy to return if you hate it. I first got different brand that didn't work, and it was easy to exchange here, then I got this. ... show more

  • This equipment doesn’t work! Do NOT buy
This is my second Denon 3800 this year. Don’t know why I got this second one. Both constantly go into speaker protect mode and stop working. I have reset and reset and spend a lot of time on the phone with their tech help. Just missed the return window as I was on vacation. Now I am stuck with the expensive and useless piece of junk. My first one is going to a warranty repair for the same reason. Speaker protection mode constantly shuts the receiver off. Have to ship it, as repair facility is 2 hours from my home. Have no confidence it will be repaired. I have had 1/2 dozen avr’s in my day and set up numerous systems. This model is a complete failure ... show more
