  • Great Buy
Color: Metallic
Over the years, I've owned various home espresso machines ranging in price from $150 to almost $800, and this is one of my favorite espresso machines ever. I purchased this model in July 2019 (I'm writing this review in Nov 2019), and have used it multiple times a day since I purchased it. Several highlights that make this one of the best I've used: a) Ease of use b) Ease of clean-up! c) Great *consistent* flavor extraction The light over my counter probably makes things look a little amber, but this machine really does pull a beautiful caramel-colored crema (as seen in these photos). As you can probably tell, this machine does not make a thick crema though. That's a good thing! For those new to espresso, you don't want a lot of crema. Depending on the coffee roast and the machine, crema can be bitter. I have found a great locally roasted espresso that works really well with this machine to produce a lovely rich under note, and a slightly bitter-sweet crema. Therefore, I don't stir my espresso since I enjoy that slight contrast. If you find the crema is too bitter, be sure to stir it into the darker coffee below the surface. That will even the notes out a bit. I typically drink espresso black, no sugar. That means I don't use the steam wand a great deal, so I don't really have many tips for working with the wand on this machine. But, the times when I have used the wand, I've stretched enough foam for a macchiato and that has turned out quite well. A couple of other tips: 1. You will need to experiment with the brand of espresso beans you use, and with the grind of the bean. No two espresso machines are the same, so no two machines with pull your shots exactly the same way either. For instance, regardless of which roaster I buy my beans from, my machine works better if I grind on Fine which is slightly more course than the Espresso setting on most grinders. I just get an overall better-tasting and better-looking cup of espresso that way. 2. Experiment with flavor profiles in the espresso blend you use. Try different roasts from different roasters. It's amazing how much variation you'll get from one roaster to another. I've found a local roaster who makes a great espresso blend that I've not gotten down to the place that I pull a shot that has a nice, rich under note with a pretty smooth finish (very little bitterness in the crema). There's a good balance even without stirring the espresso. some people like brighter, more acidic roasts, that's great, too. 3. Make sure your espresso beans are as fresh as possible, and try not to let an open package of coffee sit for more than a couple of weeks. Those things are as important as operating the machine in terms of pulling a quality cup of espresso that it satisfying to both the sense of smell and taste. (I love the aroma of espresso in the house.) Overall, the Dedica Deluxe has been a great machine thus far. I use it (on average) 2-4 times a day, and I couldn't be happier. The sleek design fits neatly on my counter, and it looks good, too. ... show more

  • Very nice espresso machine with a few drawbacks
Color: Metallic
The media could not be loaded. I like this espresso machine, small, cute, good design and gives you a nice shot of espresso. All in all it does its main job which is delivering a good espresso and making hot steam for latte. However, there are a few drawback with this machine. (There might be more as you start working with this machine over time. Here I'm talking about my 1 week experience). First you have to get rid of air blockage to reach the best performance by turning on the machine and draining hot water a couple of times from both hot water dispenser nozzle and espresso discharge. That's normal for machines working with tubes and pressure. When I started to discharge some hot water, the machine made a rapid succession of short, sharp knocking sounds repeatedly. I was suspicious that there is something wrong with my machine, but then I realized it's working fine and actually this rattling noise is due to pumping water. Second drawback which is a bit annoying to me, is when you insert the portafilter into the machine. To do that, you have to exert a pressure from left to right and there is no way to hold the machine from sliding away or flipping over. So be careful with that. ... show more

  • Works better than some commercial machines
Color: Metallic
I've been a barista for ~10 years. Finally decided to splurge on a home machine with small footprint because we don't have alot of counterspace. 1. Your coffee type/grind will be the ultimate factor in how well it pulls and how much you tamp in. Even using Cafe Bustelo I got so much crema it looked like a latte. If you dont fill it to full when tamped (leaving just enough space for the brewhead to nestle in the portafilter) it's going to be watery and lame. I dont have a properly portioned scoop yet, just eyeball it (experience). I've seen alot of complaints about this and it's 1000% user error or... maybe they did have a faulty machine. Who knows. 2. Get a 30lb spring press tamper that adjusts the depth level for you if you can't tamp level and consistent. I got one cuz I'm lazy and too tired to care when I wake up thanks to baby, also for teaching my fiance how to do it. Makes it idiot proof. 3. How do you know you filled it enough with espresso? Put your tamp in, spin it. If the grinds are leveled out and fairly compact, you have enough. If loose or has gaps in the surface, you need more before you press. When your done brewing, if your puck isnt equally wettish dry throughout, you didn't fill/tamp right or your grind is too big/wrong for this machine. We personally like Lavazza Coffee, works well every time. Make about 6-10 shots/day, going strong for about half a year now. Pros: -smaller than a Kitchenaid by ALOT. I thought they'd be similar in size. I was pleasantly surprised to find out its even smaller (again not alot of counterspace). -water tank can be removed off the back just by lifting and easy to clean. Easy refill as well. -easy auto off if you forget to push the button before walking away because you're a zombie. -can kinda make a small hot cup of tea quick by pouring hot water out the steamwand spout. We haven't really used it to steam milk cuz we like iced coffee more. -can get alot of crema depending on how good you are at making espresso Cons: -hot plate on top is just a mildly warm plate. Maybe if you use the steamwand it would get hotter. -kinda loud the first 20 uses then mellows out a bit. The pump needs to get primed and working. It does vibrate alot though. Also louder when using the steamwand. -getting the portahandle in the machine the first like 20 times is hard as well, until the seal breaks in to it. -it is shiny plastic for the most part on the outside, not metal and makes it feel flimsy when you're breaking in the seal trying to get that portahandle to lock in right. -overall height under spout makes it hard to brew into alot of mugs with. I don't like using shot glasses and wasting my crema when I can brew right into my mug/cup! -instructions say to brew espresso first them steam your milk because you have to wait a few minutes for cool down so you don't kill the machine with overheating; espresso burns after 10 seconds without a temperature drop or adding [milk] fat/dilution to it. Partially why i don't use this at all, by the time your machine cools down your milk will be fairly cooled as well to brew espresso second (what you should do). The only way around this would be adding *some* cold milk to your espresso when you brew before steaming the rest. Or an ice cube or two. -as far as I can tell you can't backflush clean your brewspout? Which gives me an ick. Run a shot of hot water through after each use to be safe. ... show more

  • We like the product, but the steam connector was missing
Color: Metallic
It is an excellent product, at a fair price: Great coffee, easy to customize, easy to use. However, the connector needed to control the steam was missing. We do not know how to get one, beside returning the entire unit. It is most likely an honest mistake, but with unpleasant effect. Kudo to De'Longhi for making such a great product, but poor logistic. ... show more
