  • Excellent Tool to Have in Your Drill Bag
I can't tell you how many times I have had to deal with damaged starting threads on a bolt or had to fiddle with a file to try to round out the end of a piece of all thread I had cut off. It is tedious in the shop with a proper vice to hold your part while trying to chamfer the threads. Working in the field it's all but impossible to do a good job. You can try tricks like rotating the part against a grinding wheel, or file. But, the results are quite inconsistent unless you use great finesse. This External Chamfer Tool which fits into your standard drill chuck makes chamfering a breeze and a 30 second job, doing a perfect job every time. You do need to secure the part either by clamping in a vice, with appropriate padding if clamping the actual threads, or by securing in a wrench or some other method in the field. The tool has sharp Carbide inserts that will really bite into your part. So, it must be secured. You can't hold it in your hand, so better not to try. Experience will teach you that it's better to feather the tool onto the end of your threads with very slight pressure, in repeated actions, to get the best results without the tool seizing and possibly causing unpleasant things from happening. In any case, great care should be used securing the part. This tool is inexpensive and a throw away item when worn out. It doesn't cost more than a nice drill bit. But, for most people with reasonable care the Carbide inserts should prove very long wearing. It's not something I need often. So, I expect to have it for years. This tool is of respectable quality and very reasonably priced. I'd recommend one for every tool bag. It easily rates five stars. ... show more

  • works well
prefer this to the screw in style others have. all bits are wear items, this will eventually fail like all bits do. nice to just cut a bolt, use this and not have to fiddle with damaged threads from cutting. still a little fiddly sometimes, but thats just the nature of altered threads.

  • Great tool
This works very well and leaves a smooth finish on hardwoods. Soft woods, not so much. If you make canes or walking sticks, you need this tool. I gave it 4 stars only because I cannot give it a longevity rating, I haven't had it long enough to do so.

  • Cleans up sides to allow nut to thread; does not clean up flat end
I tested this by cutting the ends off a 1/4" and a 3/8" bolt with a hacksaw, intentionally leaving a jagged edge. I used the deburring tool in a hand drill and it worked well to clean up the sides of the cut end, especially if I rotated the drill around a little. The deburring tool did not clean up the very end of the bolts, but did clean them up sufficiently to put a nut back on them. A quick pass with a file on the end would finish the job. I held the cut bolts in a vice; I don't think I could have held them by hand and used the deburring tool -- it would have grabbed the jagged ends and spun the bolts out of my hand. ... show more

  • Works well
I had some larger bolts with damaged threads on the ends. Because of this, they wouldn't thread in properly and were a risk for cross threading. After securing the bolt heads in a vice and using pliers to prevent the bolts from moving side to side, I was able to use this tool and fix the threads in a short time. ... show more

  • Good for hobby use.
This is probably okay for light duty use. Used it to bevel the bolt shown in the photo. It took a lot of pressure to get a slight bevel. The blades don’t seem very aggressive. It will still come in handy in my toolbox.

  • Smooth and clean...
The GMTOOLS Deburring External Chamfer Tool does a great job of smoothing the burrs and jagged cut edges of bolts and pipe edges. It effectively dresses the cut edge for starting nuts on the threads. I've also had good results using it to smooth the end of bicycle handlebars for removing and installing shifters, brake levers, and grips. If the bars have any kind of end damage, this chamfer tool does a quick and clean job of removing the rough edges. ... show more

  • like a charm
I’ve never used a de-burring chamfer tool, but I had just cut down an important stone saw nut adapter. Wow, these things are great. Smooth as could be, it skimmed off that top ragged edge real nice. I don’t know why I didn’t get one of these decades ago.
