  • Coffee Table Book
It is very difficult to review this book. It is a well written and nice looking book with thick pages and very informative about the history of Damascus Steel and why, once upon a time, it was a superior steel. Early in the book the author goes on to state that with modern steel there is no superior quality to a damascus blade. WHAT! Why make it then. Because it is pretty! It is difficult to believe that using the damascus technique - forge welding a high carbon more brittle steel to a lower carbon more flexible steel core does not still produce a superior blade. There is a pretty vague chapter on how to actually forge weld a billet. You weld your laminate metals together, bring them to forging temperature, apply flux, press or forge. Then cool and sandblast - sandblast what? The billet is welded together. The outside of the billet? Do this twice before bringing to forge welding temperature. He does provide references to other books if you actually want to learn how to make a damascus blade. The primary emphasis of the book is on how to make pretty patterns in your knife blade, which seems like an awful lot of work for a blade with no superior qualities other than it looks pretty. Summary, it is a nice looking book with a lot of information that essentially refers you to other books if you actually want to make a damascus steel blade. I am not sure what the return policy is on books. If I can, I will return it. If not, it will sit on my coffee table. The only practical application for this book is if you want to learn how to make a seemingly infinite number of fancy patterns through an extreme amount of work to make a pretty but buy the authors description, inferior blade. ... show more

  • good history of Damascus steel
I took a metallurgy course in college and enjoyed it a lot. The prof mentioned Damascus steel and I found his brief description fascinating if probably not accurate. This book explains the history of Damascus and how it is made and used presently; mostly for its looks verses quality of the steel. Modern steel is of high quality and is as good as or better than any Damascus steel. ... show more

  • outstanding
Really amazing book for those of us who make pattern welded Damascus. Pattern development with some great illustrations to help visualize. I would call it an advanced book for the maker, with the history of the various forms of "Damascus" to pattern development beyond fundamental laminates. Really happy with it. ... show more

  • In depth and informative!
Excellent book! I got it from my husband's birthday, and even though he's made knives for over 40 years, he learned a lot particularly about Damascus steel from this book. Very informative.
