  • Much faster than SATA SSD, great performance-per-watt.
Capacity: 1TB Pattern Name: SSD
Why get it: - Much faster than SATA SSD - Great performance-per-watt and low idle power. Great for laptops. - Great Crucial (Micron) support / reliability /warranty (I used their support once on a M4 SSD) - Plenty of endurance for typical consumer use cases - Free Acronis True Image SW to clone old drive into this new SSD Why skip it: - Not suitable for server workloads (e.g. highly transactional DBs) or people that, on a daily base, write >25GB worth of data Performance summary: - Data Rate: ~2.5X faster than SATA drives, ~40% less than high-end PCIe NVMe in heavy-duty workloads - Latency: ~¼ lower than SATA drives, ~40% higher than high-end PCIe NVMe in heavy-duty workloads - On typical consumer workloads (mixed random R/W low queue depth), there is no noticeable difference relative to a high-end PCIe NVMe === UPDATE 7/20/2019 === I bought a second one (1TB). Installed on my son's ASUS ROG Zephyrus G GA502 gaming laptop (for a total of 1.5TB using the free M.2 slot). Now there is plenty of space for games (512GB gets full quickly with Steam games). The only problem was that the laptop motherboard did not came with the screw (shame on ASUS). Plenty fast. Priced right. 5 starts. ... show more

  • Don't do large data transfers
Capacity: 1TB Pattern Name: SSD
I use this as my main drive in a new stx system I just built, the drive seems speedy from benchmarks and just seems fast from normal browsing, and such. (This is a fast system, but not built for gamming) I decided to do a 200 plus gigabyte transfer from another ssd in the system, and at first the write speeds were over 400 MB a second, then it slowed down to 200 MB a second, then 100, 78, 36, 15kb, then 0 and sat there for what seemed to be about 5 seconds or so, then started to transfer data again, it did this several times. I ran ATTO and it showed the speeds were about as fast as normal SATA ssd I shut the system down and went into the bios and reset it thinking it may have been something I had changed, reboot and back into windows did a black magic disk speed test all looked good speeds were where they should have been 1540/1780, then I did the same large 200GB Plus test and BAM! SAME THING! Slowdown to zero and sit about 5 seconds later begin to transfer. Shutdown the system restart system and speeds are back to normal. I think its buffer cache gets full and it bogs the ssd down Your results might vary from mine, try it and see. I'm waiting on a response from Crucial, as I wrote asking them if this was a defective drive. I'll update this when I get a response from Crucial. ... show more

  • Poor thermal performance makes P1 unsuitable for fanless systems
Capacity: 1TB Pattern Name: SSD
I bought this for my Intel NUC (https://smile.amazon.com/Intel-Machine-NUC8i7HVK-Radeon-Graphics/dp/B07BR5GK1V/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1544901609&sr=1-4&keywords=nuc8i7hvk). The drive seemed to function just fine, getting around 1.4 GB/s file transfer speeds in real world use (moving games around with Steam). However, after less than 24 hours of use, the drive seemed to fail. It did show up on explorer, but after a reboot, it did not show up on the explorer, disk manager, or the BIOS. However, after re-inserting it to the motherboard, the drive seemed to function just fine again. This happened several times, particularly after lengthy gaming sessions. Upon inspecting the drive, I discovered it was really hot to the touch and thought the thermal pad provided by Intel was not doing its job properly so I removed it. Doing so helped lengthen the time between drive failures, but that did not solve the issue. I have another NVMe drive being used in alongside the P1 (NUC8i7HVK has two NVMe slots), the Samsung EVO 970, which was noticeably cooler than the P1. I tried switching the M.2 slots thinking that one particular slot may be the problem, but the Samsung drive was noticeably cooler in the other slot as well. So, the conclusion is that the P1 has poor thermal performance compared to Samsung EVO drives. In fact, it has such poor thermal performance that I could not properly format the drive before returning it to Amazon, although it did quick format just fine. The P1 does offer better-than-SSD performance at a price that is comparable to and even cheaper than non-NVMe, M.2 drives. That seems to be the most attractive feature about this product. I would even say that it is also durable, functioning just fine and retaining data after several failures from high heat. However, if you have a fanless system, a NUC, or even a mini-ITX system with a small case and limited number of fans, I would not recommend this product and instead recommend that you consider a Samsung EVO drive, as they seem to be worth the premium. ... show more
