  • Pricey option for USB sound / better than sound cards while maintaining high quality gaming audio
Color: 180W Peak Power with Compact Subwoofer
I'm old school and have been a die hard Sound Blaster sound card user. Been that way since the first Sound Blaster. It was ALWAYS the way to go for high quality / high fidelity gaming sound as well as any computer audio. Onboard audio was never an option. And I was from the time when gaming speakers went surround sound and up to 5.1 speaker setups. Had the Logitech Z-640 for a decade. This required a sound card that supported this. So why not keep going? WELL... things have changed. Gaming speakers have died down back to 2.1. Most people use headsets with virtualized 7.1 sound. No one wants and not many manufacturers are offering multiple surround sound speaker setups anymore. To be honest my speaker setup was super cumbersome and space consuming. I never got a great experience from surround sound gaming. Maybe it was the games I played or my setup. The other thing is that over the past decade while I kept the same speakers and computer system, I had to upgrade my sound card multiple times!!! Why? Hardware-wise they all worked PERFECTLY!! All are in great condition. So WHY? Simple.. DRIVER support. I had my sound cards for so long that Creative EOL'd driver support especially when Win10 came out and again for Win11. As to why? Probably cost. But it was insane to have to buy a NEW sound card just so I am able to use it with a modern OS just because it had supported drivers. I was limping along using old version of Sound Blaster drivers that I had to search the internet for and keep a copy of on hand for my old SB Recon3D Fatal1ty (the 3rd card I had to buy). Every so often a Windows Update would happen and my sound would go out. Then I would reinstall this old driver just to get it back. It was a great card that I would still use if I could but it's getting tough. I almost considered getting the next Sound Blaster card that's out now - AE5 or AE7. Old habits are hard to kill. But I'm tired of this ride spending $$$ for drivers. It's a pain and sometimes painfully annoying. It's expensive in the long run. It's a waste of time. Both my parent's and in-laws computers went to simple USB audio because of drivers. It was not worth getting sound cards when in a few years, all of a sudden, their sound won't work. BTW, the story isn't different or better for onboard audio either. It's actually worse. To really avoid this nonsense... going to USB based audio is the best way as it doesn't require drivers for sound to work. There are two main options: DAC/AMP OR USB speaker/DAC/AMP all in one. The DAC/AMP route is primarily for headset or standard stereo speakers. Typically they don't have any surround sound or effects for gaming. Most people use studio monitors, etc. Don't get me wrong there "are" some DAC/AMP that have special audio for gaming but they are specialized and expensive. None of these would work with my current Logitech's without adapters. I wanted something simple but good. I'm not an audiophile or anything. I knew about the original SB Katana years ago and wanted to get one but it was pricey. Then recently it came up for consideration but now there's a V2 which is better (and more expensive). As of this writing, the SB Katana V2 was only available from Creative. All that was readily available was the V2X. Reviews were positive for the V2X and the main difference being lower RMS/Peak power and a smaller sub. All this meant to me is that it's not as loud as the V2. Alot of people almost say the V2 was "too" loud. They never went above level 10-15 volume (the high is 50). I have a small office setup. This isn't for a home theater or anything and decided to go with the V2X for $50 cheaper. It wasn't worth paying extra for something I won't likely take advantage of. My goal was to get something better than what I have. The Logitech weren't great speakers only 90W RMS. The audio was mostly muddy and bass heavy. Sometimes the dialogue in games or movies was hard to hear. The Katana V2x gave me an all-in-one solution, which included DAC/AMP for headsets if I wanted to go that route. I like the fact I have options for both audio modes. I have also added options to connect like Bluetooth, HDMI, optical, and AUX. I also like how I'm saving quite a bit of desk and office space with just the sound bar and sub. It's pretty amazing of what this smaller setup can generate. The RGB is nice but don't care too much for it. It's subtle. There is added Creative software to provide extra stuff like EQ and sound profiles. The best thing is that it all connects via USB. No drivers are required at all. Other cool thing is that because it's USB, I can plug it into a KVM and use one audio setup for multiple computers!! With the old sound card and speaker setup... it can only be dedicated to one computer. Overall, it became an excellent audio solution for me the more I use and adapt to my setup. I do feel this is a niche product for people with specific constraints on space or setups. It is pricey given you can get a nice DAC/AMP for much less and get excellent sound, as good or better. While I was trying to figure out a way to re-use my perfectly working 5.1 speakers, I had to give them up because the sound card (or onboard audio) was the only way I could use the speakers. :( But I'm sure in the long run, this will be worth it. So I guess in the end Creative still keeps my business but sadly, I'm giving up on sound cards for good. It's the end of an era. Sound cards are a dying breed, it seems. There used to be a few other vendors that competed like ASUS. Sound Blaster started it all and it looks like they will end with it all. ... show more

  • Pleasantly surprised.
Color: 150W Peak Power with Bluetooth 4.2
This turned out to be a much better experience than I was expecting. I got it on sale, at the right time, but I wouldn't have been upset paying the regular price after hearing the quality of this product. ...and, this system THUMPS! Very high quality sound and the volume is intense. Highly recommended, especially if you have limited desktop space. It's about 24" long and fits nicely under my 32" monitor There is also a nice RGB, but that isn't of any interest to me, so I keep it off. There are many ways to connect this system as well. Huge plus. Overall, a great experience out of the box that can be tweaked to your preferences. You can also really dial in the options with the creative app. ... show more

  • High Quality Sound, Only wish the RGB light could be turned off optionally
Color: 180W Peak Power with Compact Subwoofer
Great Soundbar, the sound quality is top tier. I consider myself to be an audiophile of sorts, and this soundbar meets my standards. It also works well with gaming, I can easily tell which noises are coming from the left or right of me. My only issue with the sound bar is that you can't turn off the RGB lighting while the device is on. It doesn't bother me much, but it would be a nice option if you would like more of a sleek setup rather than a flashy one. Still I highly recommend this soundbar, from my research it is one of the best options for a gaming soundbar and works quite well. ... show more

  • Nice setup
Color: 180W Peak Power with Compact Subwoofer
Great for gaming and general audio. Found that for music it sounds a bit heavy on the mid range and wasn't able to correct with EQ.

Great speakers for the price. Subwoofer is a bit big but I knew that going in to the purchase. They sound great and work well with my PC setup.
