I have a balaclava that I use in the deep of winter, when the temps can get to as low as 0°F. It's fleece, it's thick, and it works great. However I did find that when the temps are closer to 32°F or even higher (like spring conditions), the fleece one is way too heavy and thick. I start sweating profusely and it's overkill and it's barely breathable. I talked to a skier on the lift who mentioned to look for a lightweight balaclava, similar to what your baselayer is made of. He said the key thing to look for is "breathable" because in spring conditions, it's more about keeping your face protected from the sun and wind and not so much for keeping you warm because the conditions aren't freezing. This is a comfortable soft fleece inside with a neoprene type outside. The first impression living in MN was to put under my ski helmet. The length on neck is shorter than others I own. The fleece inside makes breathing difficult when wet and freezing. The quality is great but the design falls short literally and figuratively. With spring weather in northeast right, I wanted something that will keep me warm when riding motorcycle. These did just that. I was able to the mask and full face motorcycle helmet with no issue. The media could not be loaded. The material is nice and soft It stretches easily and does not block the breath at all. It is easy to clean and dries quickly. It fits very comfortable even with my long hair.

Balaclava is just a fun word to say. Balaclava. I like to type it too. This is a very nice balaclava that tends a bit towards the "higher end" (more expensive) when compared to other non-brand name brands, but not by much. This is the first balaclava I've owned so unfortunately I don't have others to compare it to. What I can say is that it is very comfortable and covers everything that I want it to cover. It's not too tight and I like that it is breathable. A nice feature is the sunglass/mask holes on the side which I imagine also help with air circulation. I haven't typed "balaclava" in this paragraph until now. My wife and I are embarking on a Peruvian Andes trek soon where we will be hiking and camping at 14,000 feet (during their fall); it is going to be cold. I have no doubt that this balaclava will keep me both warm and protected from the harsh sun and elements. If I'm wrong then I will certainly update this review. This mask feels warm and comfortable. I was originally looking for a summer-style one that keeps you cooler in warmer temps. This is not the right mask for that. It feel insulated with a thinker lining. It has precut holes for glasses or sunglasses, which is an added bonus. I’m not the biggest fan of the gold branding and accents, but it’s not a deal breaker. I got this for the comfort, not the color (other than distinguishing it from my husband's). It is a heathered brown with gray, but distinctly brown. There are outlined (not stitched, so no uncomfortable seams) holes for glasses. This was a nice feature. The back is extra long to protect from sun or wind. It is a bit thicker than expected. The one size is a bit awkward - got one of them same brand for my husband. He has a big head for a guy, and I'm average for a woman. Fit is just slightly too loose for me, and too tight for him.
