This is a piece of furniture using solid wood trim pieces and wood veneer panels versus all the paper laminate varieties out there. Very durable with 70lb. weight capacity per shelf. 15 adjustable shelves allow you to customize the storage space to accommodate a variety of book sizes and 3 fixed shelves provide structural reinforcement. The bookcase looks very nice and well built. It's a good value for under $600. I saw similar bookcases selling for over $900 elsewhere. It came in two boxes, which need 2 people to bring inside. Installation is not easy, but a lot of fun. It took me almost 5 hours to put the pieces together. People complained about the instruction manual is not clear. I found it not true. The step-by-step instruction is clear and just needs to be read carefully. The bookcase is very sturdy once installed. It is very heavy (over 200 lbs) and requires two people to move it, or you can put furniture pads at the bottom and then slide push to the position. Make sure that you secure it to the wall at the top to prevend tipping with the included hardware. Overall, I am very pleased with the bookcase and would definitely recommend it. ... show more

This is a sturdy bookcase, suitable for a bibliophile like me. It is not my dream bookcase (you know, the ornate kind with ladders), but it is a relatively affordable alternative for a book home that doesn’t bow or buckle under pressure like the cheap ones from the local stores. It was a little hectic to construct (we had duplicates of steps 5 and 6 and completely missing steps 7 and 8 so we had to wing it). But it is definitely worth the trouble. The backing is not the flimsy cheap cardboard and the instructions have you place extra screws in to secure backing to the dividers. If you aren’t careful, to can miss/nick the dividers like we did. I chalk it up to user error. The backing has a small gap near the middle but once install is complete I don’t even think I’ll notice. I still have to anchor it to the wall and install the shelves before my books move to their new home, but so far I am extremely pleased with my purchase. Will likely purchase a second because I don’t think it is large enough to house my entire book collection. ... show more

Bravo! Enthusiastic 5-Stars. We ordered a total of 5 large wooden book shelves. They are high-quality, attractive, heavy-weight wood shelving units with a nice cherry wood finish. Four of the five shelves were fine, but the fifth unit was damaged during shipping. These are big heavy boxes, so didn't know what to expect from the seller. BisonOffice has been amazing. Super responsive, helpful, and constructive. I've been able to photograph the damaged parts and they are sending our replacements. Assembly was reasonable using a drill! The back piece is very flimsy and has plastic tape holding it together, stuck to which is a considerable amount of the styrofoam packaging. Styrofoam has been floating around the room for days since opening and assembling the shelf. I understand something has to insulate the shelving in order to ship, but this is the kind of styrofoam I think we all wish was illegal to use. Shelves are sturdy, and look nicer than expected once all put together- with the exception of the back part being very waify. ... show more

    • Cheap Materials, Not as Described

The product materials state: "Materials: Genuine wood veneers and solid wood molding, 10 step polyurethane cherry finish" and in another section "Materials: wood and engineered wood". There is no solid wood in this product, and engineered wood usually refers to mdf, not the chipboard-like stuff this is made from. Moldings are not solid wood; they are the same veneer-covered chipboard. Even the little 1x1 supports for the top and bottom moldings are chipboard with a natural finish (to maybe somehow give you the impression that the pieces that show were stained, but the undersides were left natural??). The backing is 1-foot wide strips of veneer-covered cardboard-like material (again, not as described, "engineered wood back panel that is more durable than the cardboard on most ready to assemble bookcases"). The backing strips are held together with what appears to be clear packing tape. It's a shame the materials are so cheap because the engineering is nicely done and it was easy to put together. I'm not returning it only because it is already assembled and VERY heavy. I had to take the boxes apart in the driveway, and carry it into the house piece-by-piece, and not about to repeat the process in reverse. ... show more

Very nice unit for the price. Assembly instructions are not 100% accurate, but if you pay attention you should be ok. Some examples: 1. Step 1 says to insert 6 dowels into each divider, but it’s actually 9 per. The holes are predrilled and there are 3 in each spot. 2. Step 4 notes 3 dowels per piece (top & bottom), but it should be 6 per, again 3 per location. 3. Step 6: the picture does not show the cam holes in both dividers, but both dividers should be in the same direction during this step (with the long dowels towards the bottom piece). Few tips to keep in mind: 1. you are installing from the back of the unit, so do it on carpet, a rug or blanket. 2. If you can, flip the page once you start the actual assembly so the bottom will be where you are placing the unit. Then you’ll only need to flip it up and not move it far. 3. I would recommend a plastic handle screwdriver as there are a ton of screws (the back is screwed on, not nailed like most). Rubber screwdriver gives you a nice palm blister. Finally, there are not 15 adjustable shelves, but 12 (4 per section). The next to bottom shelf in the picture is fixed and the other 3 shelves are the bottom of the unit. So it is 18 shelves (6 per section), but only 12 are adjustable. ... show more
