Description

40 COCONUT COIR SEED PELLETS. FROM OWNGROWN. Growing your own plants from seed to fully-grown flower, fruit or vegetable is a special experience for all gardeners. And our OwnGrown starter pellets are the ideal support for sowing! FOR A SUCCESSFUL GERMINATION: 100% peat free – for a sustainable, successful, and easy cultivation of herbs, vegetables, flowers or indoor plants! EASY TO SOW: Start by placing the dry coir pellets next to each other on a tray with the small opening facing upwards. Pour water onto the pellets, bit by bit, until they are unable to absorb any more liquids. The pellets take about 5 minutes to reach their full size. Place the seeds in the small opening in the centre of the coir pellets and cover lightly with coconut soil. Keep your seedlings slightly moist and place them in a light area, for example on the windowsill. When they are large enough, the seedlings can be planted along with the pellets. PLANTING WITHOUT PRICKING: You can plant your seedlings together with the pellet – this reduces the risk of damaging the delicate roots! The young plants root through the thin fleece surrounding the coir pellets. The fleece itself decomposes after a few weeks.     • GREAT early root development
They are easy to use, Expand surprisingly large and allow for early root development of new seedlings. I garden in zone 6B and must start indoors early and nurture the seedlings for several weeks. These pellets are an ideal vehicle for starts.

    • You get what’s expected
I purchased these for the purpose of putting newly born plants into. I germinated some seeds the most basic way -by placing them in a sandwich bag with a wet paper towel and then tapping the bag to a sunny window. After a week or so of being in the bag, they all germinated successfully and had sprouted with only a single root system to start and where ready to be planted into a grow medium I’ve done this germination process many times in the past as I usually do this yearly towards the end of winter and I do it to all types of plants. I start with the plants living indoors for awhile, growing them inside until they big and strong which usually is right around the same time spring has come so it’s the perfect time to move them outside No matter what type of plant a seed is, I always choose to germinate seeds in a plastic sandwich bag bc for me it never fails. Typically after germinating, I use loose soil or even the compressed pucks of soil (similar to these) as the medium of choice to plant my seedlings into and I’ve never had issues with soil but this year I wanted to try something different just out of curiosity I have used coconut coir many times before, never on its own entirely though as I usually use it to add to the soil of an already well established/ grown plant if I’m wanting to have more control over the moisture/watering cycle of the plant Coconut coir is great when you want more control over the humidity of a plant which is usually the use I have for it, but I also heard it’s great as a substitute for soil on your indoor plants as it’s not as messy as soil can be. Coconut coir is very light weight-even when wet, it’s like course, light weight, short hay like strings all matted together, which is why it’s a great medium when wanting to control moisture/humidity bc even when it’s watered the coconut coir will never clump together (like wet soil) bc the stinginess of the coir maintains spaces for any air to continuously flow through Soil on the other hand is heavy and only gets heavier when it’s watered and bc the water clumps it together (think mud) it leaves little (if any) space for any air to be able to flow freely through, which, (depending on the type of plant) can cause a sad and overwatered plant or worse case scenario it could even drown and kill the plant So coconut coir can and is very helpful and can be beneficial in many ways bc of its airy and lightweight consistency but at the same time it is exactly that same airy and lightweight consistency that caused it to fail as being the medium of my new sprouted seedlings. Since it’s so light weight and never dense even when watered-there was no support there to make it possible for me to plant the seedlings into bc there was nothing there to hang onto the tiny root system. Wet soil on the other hand has the weight and consistency to really support any plants root system-tiny/delicate ones and well as big strong ones bc wet soil cements the roots in place which is needed to support all plants as they grow Had I started the germination process of the seeds in the actual coconut coir and skipped the sandwich bag all together, then maybe the root system would have passed through the coir as it grew, kind of tangling itself which would have given the necessary support needed for the plant to continue to grow …. Maybe but I didn’t try so really I can’t say I ended up soaking all the pucks in water so they all grew and plumped up full of the moisture, I then tore off the surrounding netting of each pod which exposing the now loose coconut coir and I mixed it in with some potting soil (half/half) which then created a proper medium that was able to support the sprouts So long story short - I love coconut coir and it is very useful, I personally don’t love it on its own as a grow medium and I especially don’t love it as the medium choice for new plants/sprouts as there just isn’t enough density of the coir to be able to cement and support a tiny root system ... show more

This is my first time using coco coir, so I won't know how effective they are for several weeks. They arrived on time, were well packaged, and appear to be high quality.

    • Not great.
These are awful. They reconstitute to uncertain sizes. It's really hard to place the seeds. I've had bad growth results. Peat pots are much better.
