Description

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is an American long-range heavy-bomber aircraft that was created by the American airline company Boeing Airplane Company. This is was one of the most popular bombers serving the Allies during World War II. Several hundred such machines took part in many actions, creating powerful so-called carpet raids. It was heavily armed with a deck weapon, which was the inspiration to call it the "Flying Fortress. " The Flying Fortress is the largest block model aircraft that COBI has issued so far. It has moving elements such as wheels, wing ailerons, onboard weapons and propellers. Under the deck there is an opening hatch from which the bombs included in the set fall out. The plane utilizes pad-printing decorations so no stickers are used in this set. The prints reflect the painting of the aircraft from the war period. The cab has a specially prepared "Mascot of Memphis" print for the occasion. This is a very extensive model that will work equally well in any aviation or history enthusiast collection. Younger block fans can also play with it thanks to their durable and solid construction. The perfect reproduction of details and the construction of blocks, which does not require gluing and painting are certainly the great advantages of this product. A special exclusive pilot figure with uniform is included with the aircraft. The cap has a printed emblem and a brown visor. The body has a uniform print with an emblem on the back. The characteristic pilot head is used for the first time with this set. The pilot is the perfect complement to this exclusive edition of the B17 Flying Fortress "Memphis Belle" and is a great treat for collectors.

  • Love the b-17, loved the build, don’t care much for the accuracy
Cobi makes very good brick built models. From the exterior: top notch. The interior? Well, single seat cockpit it is not. Would I buy it again? You bet. But I do wish Cobi would just dispense with their mini-figs and just build for accuracy.

  • Priced right for what you get
I'm basing this review, in part, on a comparison to what this set would be if it was LEGO instead. Right out of the gate, the price point is very attractive as an equivalent from LEGO would easily be twice as expensive. PROS: - Nice packaging, box, etc. - Great instructions, easy to follow - Final build is impressive-looking - was 'fun' CONS: - several missing pieces - Elements oftentimes don't fit together perfectly flush, with visible gaps once assembled - glue had to be used in a couple spots (there was no other way!) What this set has going for it is that it fulfills a niche LEGO does not: cool looking military models. It's also priced right. However, you do get what you pay for. If LEGO had a B-17, I'm sure it would be better quality overall, but also twice as expensive. ... show more

  • Very cool but not very durable as a toy after.
This was a fun project for my 7yo and I do together. It's a typical large scale lego/cobi style build. Looks amazing, but playing with it proves tough. The inside engines and landing gear fall off constantly. More layering in this area is needed to support the weight. I might get out the super glue to keep my sons frustration down. Fun project for sure! ... show more

  • Beautiful build but not exactly playable
My 8yo couldn't assemble this himself. I don't expect him to, but mentioning this fact. It took me almost all day (with breaks in between each of the 4 bags) to put this together. Some parts were confusing but nothing I couldn't figure out in a few minutes. It's an amazing build, and looks awesome when you're done. I was quite satisfied once completed. My son wants to play with it, and it's for him. I'm sad to say it's not holding up to get gentle play, and I expected at least that The landing gear pops off every few minutes, and then the green tops keep bending up and popping off. It's a heavy plane, I think the weight of the wings make it difficult to do anything but look at it. Hoping I can find a way to get it to stick together best as my kiddo really loves it and is super into WWII planes. ... show more

  • Ok, if you have spare parts
This was missing multiple pieces. While it looks good, the plane cannot be assembled as directed. It requires assembling and disassembling to get parts to fit, and even then, not all of them will. Cobi doesn't provide part numbers so here is what I was missing based instruction numbers and descriptions: #23 2x10 plate, gray; #27 1x2 slope, gray; and #28 1x4 curved piece, gray On instruction #32, the piece will not fit . On instruction 33, the 1x1 curved piece will not fit on the inside engines. It was poorly designed. The landing gear cannot be moved up or down without it falling out of the airplane. This is due to the gear being held on by a 4x4 block with no support, and the arm actually latching in place, so that when pulled or pushed, the block detaches from the plane. While turrets have clear windows, the cockpit is left open. While the bomb doors are designed to open, they are smooth and have no way to open them during play. Further, these are attached minimally and fall off when attempting to open. There is no way to load the bombs except to turn the plane upside down, remove the doors, insert the bombs, and reattach the doors. Any handling of the plane will cause the edge pieces to detach; they are assembled without support of any kind. In short, if you are going to assemble and look at it, this might work for you - if you can overlook missing pieces, and exposed studs where pieces won't fit. But if your child (or you) want to play with it in any way, this is not the product for you. ... show more

  • Lots of fun for Grandson
I bought this for my 11 year-old grandson for Christmas, and he loves it. I saw him a day or two after New Year's, and he proudly showed me that he had completed the assembly. It's larger than I realized--the wing span is over 24 inches. My grandson is very interested in all military subjects and he enjoys putting models together, so this was really the perfect gift. ... show more
