  • Great value cutter
Like a lot of the other reviewers, I bought this cutter to use in my flattening jig. This is my first time using this type of set up, and I didn't want to spend a lot of money on an insert cutter, so this particular model fit the bill as being one of the least expensive carbide tipped 2" cutters I found. Overall, I'm really impressed. There is no noticeable vibration, and the cutter made quick work of flattening the end grain beech cutting board I used as a feasibility test. The depth of cut was around 1/16". The router is a DW625 3HP; power wasn't a problem, and it was surprisingly controllable during the cut (I only cut in one direction each pass - against the rotation of the cutter, but return passes with the cutter weren't squirrely either.) There were a few high spots and it flattened them w/o issues. A couple of points. The close up shots show the first few passes - I was cutting about 3/4 of the bit diameter, and I think that was too much. You can see the tool marks pretty clearly. I don't know if the router cants slightly, or if the trailing edge of the cutter left apprentice marks, but I had much better luck cutting 1/2 the diameter or less, about 1" per pass. The wider view shows subsequent passes. The camera makes it look worse, as those marks were removed with final sanding (120 then 220 grit with a random orbital) as shown in the pic of the finished board. Overall, I'm $45 into plywood for the jig and another $25 in the cutter. Definitely worth the money for a first time flattening set up that I'm sure will get tons of use. ... show more

  • Flat and fantastic.
Ok, so I did alot or research before buying this bit to flatten slabs of wood on a router sled that I built. Thanks to other reviews, I decided on this one and I am happy that I did. It worked very well and I was able to flatten the surface of the wood slab in no time because of the diameter of this bit. Price was great too. ... show more

  • Nice little bit for my router sled
I make cutting boards for a hobby and sell a fair amount of them. I recently built a router sled to speed up leveling of my end grain boards and picked up this bit to help me out. I’ve done about a doze. Boards now and this bit is cutting down my processing time by about half an hour per board. I can run this over the board in just a few minutes and get straight to sanding. The bit is sharp and works well in my Bosch 1.5HP router. I’lol buy again when it gets dull (though it has shown no signs of it so far). Photo is of a cutting board before being run through my router sled. ... show more

  • Great value performs beautifully!
So I bought this bit because it was inexpensive but looked robust and well made. When you're trying to clean your spoilboard (the board behind you're finished project space that you're okay getting damaged) and use this as it was designed it will take a bit of abuse. This did a beautiful job cleaning up my spoiled board behind my Maslow CNC machine. I typically cut 1/16 deep so taking off that much cleared about 95% of the damage and resurfaced nicely. Great value very accurate! ... show more

  • Made a mistake (twice) and still kept cutting beautifully
I bought this to plane some wood slabs on a home made router sled using aluminum angle for the router and 3x3 steel square tubing for the rails. Just what I had available and I wanted it to be stout. At first I was only planing at 24" widths then I put two slabs together and had to get to 48" widths which was at the extreme of my router sled jig. I hotglued small pieces of plywood to limit the router from reaching the steel tubing. I guess I got carried away and ended up knocking the endstop off and bumped the bit into the steel tubing. The blades looked to be in perfect shape even after taking about a 1/16" off the steel tubing. I kept using the bit with no noticeable decrease in performance -- although I was only planing about a 1/16" off at a time. Glued the plywood back on and did it again! Two instances with the steel tubing and still perfect blades. No chips or anything. Anyways, I did at least 10 more passes and will keep using it until I can't anymore. ... show more

  • This is the one you're looking for!
I have put this thing through hell this past week. Paired with a 2hp router, it has chewed through about 20 board feet of hard maple and walnut. And I mean that's the amount I've actually planed down, 1/16th at a time. It's still sharp. If you're digging through Amazon and looking for the best cheap bit to use as router planer, you've found it. I will say that while it's well-balanced, it does lay down some tooling marks. A quick once-over with a random orbital and some 120 grit knocks it right off, and still leaves a perfectly flat surface. I don't think I'll need a replacement for at least a few months, but I'm buying a couple more right now just in case the listing goes away. Don't hesitate, this is the one you're looking for! ... show more

  • Did the job
For the price this did what I needed it to do. I was making a desktop and I needed to level it. The first picture is my jig setup. The second shows the first pass. It did pretty well. The 3-1/2hp router bogged down at 10,000 rpm (first pass) so I set it to 13,000. As I went the bit got dull (hard maple) so by the last pass it was burning quite a bit. I took off 1/16 at the most per pass and roughly 1/8” to 3/16” total per side. The last photo is after belt sanding to remove burn marks and then finish sanding to 220grit. Worth the price but dulls easily on hard woods. ... show more

  • Clean cut
I used this to plane some 8 inch thick beam scraps. Worked great. Small depth changes, overlapping passes at a low router speed and it made very clean cuts
