  • So much better than using a router for a hobby CNC.
I purchased a large-ish (48x36) hobby CNC from a company that recommended using a Makita router for the spindle. While I understand their reasons for recommending the Makita, in every video I watched in preparation for receiving this thing, I was put off by how loud they were. Instead I ordered this spindle kit and am very happy with it. Pros Extremely quiet - When the dust collector is not running, you can hold a conversation with someone while the CNC is in use. Smaller form factor - It takes up less overall space on the Z-Axis than the Makita. Controller is controllable - There are lots of interface options to make this work with your axis controller and software. Plenty of power - I ran a few deep-cut tests in MDF and it seemed to perform quite well. Cons Requires a bit of an understanding of the system to get the settings in the controller right. You don't get much information about the spindle, so you have to do your research. It didn't come with nearly enough coolant hose for a machine the size of what I bought. It was impossible to find the right size coolant hose locally - ended up having to order more from Amazon. You might need an engineering degree to interface this with your axis controller. Overall, I am extremely happy I went this route instead of using the recommended router. It took me a few weekends of tinkering with interfacing this to my axis controller, but in the end it all works very well. ... show more

  • Great upgrade from a router
Style: 110V 1.5KW Air Cooled
Upgraded to this unit from a Dewalt DWP611 on my CNC router. As others have noted, setting up the VFD is a bit of a chore. Once it's set you don't have to mess with it. There's no documentation included, you're on your own - the info is out there though. I have a few hours on the spindle so far and it has performed nominally. Much quieter than the router I was using. The power is nice. It handles larger cutters nicely. The square body made it easy to mount to my machine I did check the runout, on the spindle taper I measured .004" which is more than I'd like, but okay for my machine If you are limited to 110V power to where you run your machine this is an excellent choice - most other options out there are 220V ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I am not sure if this combination of VFD and spindle is a proper set-up. The device is rated at 110V, but all the literature that is included describes 220V. I could not get the programming correct because the spindle is rated 8 Amps (according to label) but the VFD would only allow to choose 7. It took a long time to find the programming information online to set it up, and it ran good for one test. It ramped up to 24000 rpm, so I ran it for a couple minutes, and it didn't overheat. I hooked up the controller wiring and sent G-Code (S12000 M03) it ramped to about 500 rpm and I got an error code (A.oL); however, it eventually spun up to speed, and the error went away, but the next time I ran it I got another error code and the VFD shut down. Botton Line...I have no idea how to contact the seller, and I posted a question for contact info to which no answer was given, so I called Amazon for a return...I'm done with MYSWEETY! ... show more

Style: 110V 2.2KW Water Cooled
Overall I'm happy with this spindle. I have only a few hours under my belt, and I'm still fine tuning my machine, but here's a few notes that I picked up along the way. 120V wiring: Hot - goes to R Neutral - goes to T (Leave S terminal Empty) Ground - Goes to Ground UVW - these are your 3phase leads that go to your spindle, DO NOT mix these up with your incoming power. THIS SPINDLE IS NOT GROUNDED. There is a 4 pin connector on this spindle, but only 3 wires are connected. It is advised to ground the spindle. I simply added a wire to the 4th pin via sodlering, and then added it to the screw connection of the connector plate, making sure it made metal to metal contact, no painted surfaces because that will prevent the unit form being grounded. You can then use the 4th wire in your spindle cable (which you'll need to purchase separately) and use that as you're ground to ground the whole thing to your grounding terminal on your VFD. As for controller setup, there are a number of ways to wire a controller to this, but here's the overall idea. You can wire with forward and reverse, or just forward in my case. This obviously tells the spindle which direction to spin. VI is used for your voltage reference for speed. This VFD can use 0-5V and 0-10V, I think you can even go up to 24V, but don't hold me to that. This is an analog reference, so the higher the voltage the higher the spindle will spin. There are two grounds. One is labeled DCM and one is labeled ACM. DCM is the ground that is paired with your Analog Voltage reference to tell how fast the spindle should spin. This ground allows you to close that circuit It's separate because you may be using a different voltage, thus needing a separate ground. ACM is the ground for your communication pins on your controller. These are usually 5V. This unit puts off a lot of EMi and RFI. If you are using Arc Faults breakers or have some in the same panel and you try to power on high power machines like a dust collector, this unit will cause them to trip when you power on those specific machines. The solution for me was to add a Cyber Power UPs from the wall to my unit. This allowed for EMI filter through the UPS. There are other EMI filters that you can use if you are building out your own control panel, and I'm still researching some, but I bought one with no luck, so they aren't all created equal. Water Cooling: There are a bunch of ways you can water cool this spindle. The provided pump is the garden variety, and like many have commented, the fittings that come with it don't fit the tubing that is included with the unit. Now the tubing does fit the spindle, but the pump has no fitting to provide water. Here is my solution. I bought some 3/16ID 20ft long tubing from Lowes. This is the Clear Vinyl type so I can see the fluid running. I also purchased several 1/4 barb x MIP adapter fittings. I made sure it was plastic because most cooling systems consist of aluminum and any brash fittings would corrode the aluminum. To get the 3/16ID to fit over the 1/4 barb I used a heat gun and got it about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way down the barb. To provide a reservoir I used a 5 gallon bucket, and filled it with DISTILLED water, this will keep impurities out, and prevent build up inside the spindle. If you keep your machine in a cold space like a garage, I would add antifreeze in the proper proportions, because ice expands, and that would destroy your water cooling in the spindle and in turn destroy your electronics. I put a lid on the 5 gallon bucket and add 2 3/4" Threaded Female Dapter Union Fittings. They have an inside threaded portion that fits the 1/4 barb x MIP fitting really well. This allowed me to close the lid, and keep debris out of my water supply. I put 1 1/4 barb on my return and I put 2 on the pump side. This way I could connect tubing from the pump that submerged in the water, through the fitting, and then up to my machine. Keep in mind, i needed to use a bunch of that vinyl tape on the threads (prob not the right product to user) to keep the build up pressure from making it's way up through the threads. Lastly, I cut a small hold in the top to allow the power cord through, and then I used a block with half the diameter of a dril bit cut out on one face of a piece of wood to pinch the cord to the top, securing it with 4 screws through the top. This also prevent debri from getting in. This unit is great for the money. The spindle clamp requires that you are comfortable with drilling into cast aluminum, and works well for holding the spindle. I have no issues with run out, and to be honest, my machine is incredibly accurate aside from some gantry flexing due to the material I built my machine out of. I tested the voltage of all my hardware on one 120V 20amp circuit, and I was only pulling about 4 amps at 24000 RPM (not under load), and about 300-350 Watts. Some would say that you won't get as much torque out of this with it being 120V, but i've done 1/4 inch passes without any issues. I still have much more testing to do before I can say this is an amazing product, but it's made me happy thus far, and it's sub 1K for the price tag. If all else fails, it get's you to a starting point! Oh, DO RESEARCH on VFD settings. This DOES NOT come preconfigured. There are some base line settings that will get you started in the video for this product, but it won't get you where you want to be with a controller. Learn what each setting means and take your time. You don't want to burn out your spindle. I spent the better part of a day to a day and half really going over all my settings to ensure I set it up right. ... show more
