  • Good alternative to Nespresso Original. Affordable espresso at home. But it's not Vertuo.
The media could not be loaded. I really enjoy coffee. It's my break of the day at work and I usually go to the office pantry, where they have a Keurig machine. I'm perfectly fine with Keurig coffee. I even had a Keurig at home for some time before I gave it away because it was taking up too much counter space. I mostly make coffee using a manual dripper, but I also have a French press, an Aeropress and a cold brew system. I even have my own manual burr grinder. These all make great coffee. But coffee is not espresso and there are times when I want a good espresso, latte or cappuccino with the deeper, richer coffee bean flavor. I don't drink espresso enough (yet) to make getting a $400+ dedicated home espresso machine worthwhile, so I occasionally get my $7 cup at the local shop. A Nespresso machine is cheaper, but still above what I'd like to spend on an occasional espresso. Then I came across this and it fits well for for my needs. The device makes espresso and lungo. Lungo is basically the same thing, but twice as much water is pulled though. It's different from Americano, where water is added afterwards. And it takes Nespresso ORIGINAL pods, not Nespresso VERTUO pods. This is important, because at my local store, I only saw Nespresso VERTUO pods for sale. If I want to get the ORIGINAL pods, I have to get them online. Luckily, they are plentiful online (and it's cheaper). The device operation is pretty simple, though the blinking lights system to indicate when it's ready is not the most obvious. Plug it in, insert a pod, then hit either a espresso button or the lungo button. Then wait. The first time may take a few extra seconds to kick in because they are preheating, but it responds pretty quickly afterwards (see video). The espresso is made in no time at all. Best of all, it has the classic crema that comes with true espresso. You're not going to find that in regular coffee (even Aeropress). And it tastes like espresso should. It's has a relatively small water container in the back, but this is meant for personal use, so that's fine with me. It has a very small footprint on the countertop compared to my previous Keurig. A few things I should note that isn't necessary bad, but you should keep an eye out for. The waste bin isn't very big. The ad says it fits 12, but the manual says no more than 10. I don't keep old used beans around, so I dump them out after each session. Make sure to open the top latch to release the used pod into the waste bin, otherwise it just sits in the top compartment (don't be like that office guy that leaves the old Keurig pods in the machine). Leave the cup there for a few seconds longer after making your drink as there seems to be a few last drops. Less mess to clean up. And if you're like me, who will use it frequently, but not all the time, run it once afterward without a pod to flush out the system. As for whether this is truly 20 bar or 19 bar (like Nespresso), I have no clue. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the device. It's for someone who enjoys espresso, but not yet ready to commit to a true espresso machine. ... show more

  • Great alternative to Nespresso Pixie
Note that there is a $15 coupon currently in effect. The CHULUX Espresso Machine reminds me of an old Nespresso Pixie machine I used to own. They operate the same way. If you're not used to Nespresso machines, you may want to read the manual for how to operate it as I personally don't find the interface all that intuitive. Once you load a Nespresso pod, the two buttons should light up, indicating that it is ready for you to make a selection between an espresso or a lungo. When you make a selection, depending on whether there is already hot water ready to go or not, it may seem like nothing has happened. After a few beats, you'll hear the machine start up. As with the Nespresso machines, the stand is designed for small espresso cups and won't accommodate most mugs so you'll want to fold the stand up and out of the way. So far, I don't taste any difference in the espressos extracted in the CHULUX versus espressos extracted in a Nespresso machine. For a fraction of the price of a Nespresso, I'm happy with the CHULUX. There are slight imperfections in the craftsmanship of the machine that I've noticed. For example, the seam at the top of the machine isn't perfectly aligned. The capsule container sometimes gets stuck and needs to be eased out. But again, at a fraction of the price for a Nespresso, I think this is a great alternative. ... show more

  • We like it
I had an on-brand version of this machine many moons ago and it was nothing but trouble. This machine compares favorably to that (admittedly much older) device in every metric we've encountered. It heats up faster, the pod hatch is slicker/easier to operate, the noise is much lower, and it honestly looks better. I will say that the instructions are written in moon-man talk, so here's the basic rundown to make espresso: 1.) Plug it in. 2.) Put water in the tank 3.) Push *one* of the buttons on the top to turn it on (either button is fine--they'll both flash). 4.) Put a pod in the chamber. 5.) Put a cup under the nozzle. 6.) When the lights stop flashing and go solid, pick the size you want and push that button (left small, right big). 7.) If you don't know what to do with a brewed cup of espresso at this point, you may struggle in life generally. ... show more

  • Just ok.
I saw the opportunity to get one of these, as I've heard good things about Nespresso and using pods. First of all, this isn't a cup of coffee kind of machine, it's more of an espresso and that's it. You do have a larger cup option, which will allow for a watered-down espresso, americano kind of vibe. The machine looks nice and heats up very quickly. It's not always consistent though, sometimes I have to push the button a second time to get the right amount of espresso. ... show more

  • Compact, cute, gets the job done
This is the most basic espresso machine. It's made even simpler with the use of Nespresso pods. It's insanely easy to use- you basically fill the water chamber, plug it in, pop in a pod, and push either button depending on the yield/ water ratio you want. That's it! With this and my electric milk frother, it takes no time & very little effort to have a cappuccino or latte whenever I'd like. This espresso maker is attractive enough to leave on the counter all the time, and it's compact size means it takes up little space. It's just perfect for my coffee bar and it's a great alternative to more expensive models with name recognition. ... show more

  • Practically Perfect
My DH has been complaining about the coffee that our Neuron produces lately. I told him we could try a Nespresso, but he was reluctant to pay the high cost for one in case he didn't like it. This lower priced alternative fit the bill. I ordered this machine, along with some "bestpresso" pods from Amazon, which are a cheaper knockoff, too. The machine is compact and heats up quickly. It makes very nice espresso in 2 sizes. He loves the coffee, and I can't tell the difference between this and the higher priced name brand machine or its output. I'm impressed and DH is happy. Recommended. ... show more
