  • Well made and easy to install for this mechanically challenged chicken owner
Was relatively easy to install other than the mounting phillip head screws were of soft metal and stripped easily (took me awhile to remove them - I knocked off one star for all that agravation). I replaced them with decent quality small decking screws I had around. Other than that things went well and the instructions were easy to follow. I set the unit up to use its built in light sensor to open at dawn and close at dusk. Was initially worried that the door may close before all the chickens had retired for the night but it closed well after they were all in and it has worked brilliantly for the 2 months we have had it running. My next worry is that we are now in the dead of winter with lots of snow and temps going down to 0 degrees F and that the chemistry in the 9v battery will fail, but so far no problems. It sure is nice not have to get up early on these cold winter morning to let the chickens out, and also not to worry if we aren't home at sunset to close the coop door. Before the ChickenGuard we lost a chicken to a predator that got into the coop at night before we had gotten home to close it.. ... show more

  • Excellent product
I installed this a year ago and it has performed flawlessly. I had a Rent -a- Coop- door opener before this one. The ChickenGuard door is better. I did read other comments about battery life. I replaced mine before necessary after 10 months. I know they last at least that long. Installation takes some planning but i think if the average person is patient and careful it's not that hard Programming? Just keep the instruction book close by, it is less complicated than a sprinkler timer. The only issue that i had is i entered am instead of pm the first time. Since then, I regularly adjust the open / close times through the year. TIP: Install it in the shade and out of the rain and it'll last a lot longer. ... show more

  • Avoid. Better products out there.
I don't normally write reviews but due to my frustrations with this product I thought I would share my experience to help others in their research for a coop door opener. What I liked about this product was the ability to run on battery and electric. However, in order to run the unit on electricity it needs an adapter which did not arrive with the unit. I reached out to customer service and they sent me an adapter. It's a flimsy plastic piece and after 1 week it stopped working. I contacted customer service again and they would not send me a replacement as they wanted proof that it really was a bad adapter. So I had to pay for shipping in order to send adapter to some address in Texas. 3 weeks later and still didn't hear back from anyone so I contacted the company yet again. They apologized no one got back to me and sent a new adapter. I found it annoying that I had to pay the shipping costs to send back faulty adapter and customer service did not offer to reimburse me. The unit worked after that but 2 weeks later the door stopped working. I found that the cord had gotten tangled in the spool and it was a giant pain in the ass to get it working again. And of course this happened during a snowstorm that dumped 14 inches of snow. Had to go out in 9 degree frigid temps to take down the entire unit, disconnect from door to bring it inside, and completely re-wind cord on spool. This involved unscrewing entire unit from coop wall, disconnecting door, unscrewing another 4 screws to open unit, then unscrewing another 4 screws to remove spool. Then I had to take entire cord off and rewind as it had gotten wrapped and tangled up completely off the spool to the side. I have owned the unit for less than 6 months so did not expect to have this many issues right away. Below are some other cons: 2. One major con is that one can only run electric OR battery. So if you are running on electric and the power goes out the battery can NOT be used as automatic back up. One must unscrew and open unit up in order to make a different wire connection so that it can run on battery. It would have made more sense if the unit could just automatically convert to battery power in event of power failure. 3. Another con is the external plastic adapter needed in order to run on electric power. It is cheaply made and connects loosely to outside of unit. One must purchase USB cable and USB adapter separately to use it. Also, the adapter did not come with the unit--I had to go through customer service to have them send me one. 4. Another con is spool where cord wraps around. Poor design allows for cord to fall off spool and get tangled. The website troubleshooting section states this is a rare event that the cord gets tangled....however the fact that the website offers an entire section on how to rewind spool in event it gets tangled tells me the problem occurs more frequently than just a rare event. And the section on website on how to rewind cord was completely useless to me as the cord had wrapped around and tangled OFF the spool and to the side. 5. Another issue is the LUX settings to allow door to open and close with light. Unfortunately this feature does not work if your chickenguard unit is located in a shady spot. It worked fine until I put a cover on my run and then the light sensor would no longer work. This to me was not a huge issue as you can set the unit manually to open and close at a specific time. But, if your unit will be located in shady, covered spot I would advise not spending extra money on Premium unit as LUX sensor may not work as intended. 6. I can't speak to installation as someone did it for me but there were issues with finding right door to use with it. The motor is not very strong and in the end had to use a very thin piece of metal for door as the wooden one I wanted to use was too heavy. As for positives...the unit seems fairly easy to install and the settings are pretty straightforward to figure out. The door moves up and down very slowly so your hens have enough time to get in. However, overall I would not recommend due to frustrations with customer service and multiple issues I've had as per above. If the unit breaks on me again I won't bother trying to fix it. I will instead toss it in the garbage and buy a new opener from another company. ... show more

  • I love this thing!
I bought a different auto door and had to return bc it could actually as a guillotine with the force of the closing. This is perfect. I reconfigured the door I already had to work with it. It was easy to set up and is just as described!

  • Easy to install, and works great so far
I loved that I could use the door I had already made for my coop. I just attached the unit to the wall above the door, tied on the string that is already in the unit, and programmed the unit according to the instructions. This took about 15 minutes total. It was easy to set it to open at dawn and close at dusk. There is even a handy red light that flashes several times every 30 seconds when the door is closed. I can easily see it from my bedroom window about 100ft from the coop so that I know the door is closed at night. The only thing I wish it had was a way to open and close it remotely so that I don’t have to go into the run if I need to close the door for some reason. ... show more

  • Works great but…
This is a great very simple but ex pensive way to automatically open and close your chicken door. I did not mind spending the money on the unit as it does save time going out twice a day to make sure that the door is closed. The mechanism works on a magnet Principal. The door will open and close and it will count the amount of times that the spool goes by a magnet therefore it knows how much to open or close the door. I mention this as the first one that I purchased was acting faulty. It would open halfway and then close more than it should and after three days I’m trying to figure out why I realized that it was my fault because on the other side of the unit that I mounted on the outside of the coop, was a camera system I have installed to monitor the inside of the chicken coop. The camera system, Arlo, uses a magnet base to attach the camera to the base. This magnet was interfering with the opening and closing of the door and driving me nuts until I figured it out. Once I moved the camera and it’s magnetic base away from the chicken coop door opener, it worked great and has worked great ever sense. ... show more
