  • Edit: Actually not bad after replacing the part with the motor.
We purchased this in July but didn’t install until November. It is now a month in using this door and I’m still not confident if it will go up or down without me checking in it. It seems to need recalibration often. And the screen is hard to read in the cooler weather. Just shut off once, so I thought it was the batteries. Took the system down and tested the batteries, they were at a 1.7 so plenty of juice left. Perhaps it’s the cold weather? Today, I just went out there at 12:50pm to find the door did not open at 7am as programmed. The clock reads 5:15 although I reset the time 2 days ago now it’s hours off. When I went to open the door manually by pushing the up button, it didn’t work. I tried to recalibrate but now the up button makes the door go down and the down button makes the door go up. I’m about to throw in the towel. It needs constant reconfiguring, I can’t trust it, and I think I may be stuck with this since I purchased way earlier than I ended up installing. Edit to add: I am about 2 more winters into using this automatic door. The first one I received had some glitches and the company replaced it, however, I had to prove it wasn’t working by emails back and forth asking for more info. I ended up making a video of 2 days worth of me fixing the rope to be sure it had enough give, switching the batteries, etc. and they then replaced it. It’s been fine since. I am honestly impressed with how well this unit holds up in the dead of winter. I am in the North East and we get brutally cold days at times. This bad boy has never disappointed. The only minor annoyance is when it catches in the summer, we have a wooden coop and the moisture from the summer humidity makes the wood swell, and in turn, make the tracks come toward each other just a smidge more than they should. This causes the door to catch and not open or close fully. The rope gets caught and at that point you have to take everything off and get some tweezers to fix it, or, cut it. Again, this is only in the hot humid summer and probably has more to do with climate or the way we installed it than the actual unit. I come back around to give this a 4 star instead of a 3. Would be 5 star if the customer service would have taken my word for it after I explained in great detail what was going on with the unit. Felt like I had to do a little more than I should have to just have it replaced & swapped out for a non-defective one. Edit: we know have had the door installed for coming up on 3 years. I am honestly impressed with the unit after replacement - still, the batteries are kicking it’s been months. Last summer the string did get caught and I bit the bullet, cut it at its lowest point and then started over wrapping it around the spool again cleanly. After I did this, it’s been working perfectly since. The machine itself I am very impressed with how it holds up in the freezing of the winter and steaming hot and humid days of summer. If I could leave 4.5 review due to the customer service I would, however, the product has done what it says it would and has held the test of time so, I feel like a 5 is deserved for the product itself. But I do want to note that customer service is really important these days. The age of excessive questioning and proving it’s not this, that, or the other thing when the customer was upfront with all they’ve done to attempt a fix in the first place, is exhausting. I hope the company takes this as constructive criticism and makes a change for the better in return/exchange policy/procedure.2 Regardless, I would definitely buy this again and recommend to others, as well. ... show more

  • Pretty good, but very poor value.
This opener is decent. But considering the price, I expected a lot, lot more. The main problem I have with it is its resistance to water. They claim the board inside is "FULLY encapsulated in epoxy resin", leading people to believe the electronics are potted. That's a completely false statement. Portions of the board are COATED with some sort of sealant. Significant portions of the board, as well as all the wiring associated with the board and batteries, are exposed. The casing does have a weather strip sealing out moisture, but that will not keep all water out, and will fail. In wet climates that see extreme temperature variations, I guarantee the internals will corrode due to condensation inside the box. And then if you opt to use the usb port to power it, it won't last more than 1 year before those connections corrode and fall off. And then there's the programming. The calibration method they use to tell the opener when the door is open and closed is flawed bound to fail or become uncalibrated as the battery voltage falls off. And it DOES fail. For the price, they should have used a step motor or some other far superior method. The final thing that torqued me was that they programed the software so you can't set the timer to open the door in the afternoon. They probably did that thinking I need protection from myself so I don't accidentally set it to pm when most people need it to open in the am. I don't need help though, thanks. Now when I need to lock my chickens in the coop to train them to lay in their boxes except for a few hours in the evening, I have to do it manually. I would be completely fine with these shortcomings; but not for this price. It's a product that needs further development. Its value is half of what they are charging. The only reason they are getting away with this price is because of this chicken and hobby farm fad right now. ... show more

  • Somewhat reliable
I purchased in May’2023. Worked great for 4 months. In September it would not close and I had to recalibrate. Batteries also failed in September. ChickenGuard states that batteries in the Extreme should last a year ir more. Hoping I don’t have anymore issues.
