  • Easy to use
I am using this product for my Tom Tom Go - my 2014 Rav4 does not have built in GPS, and the TomTom is used for this car. This product does fit nicely on my dashboard.

  • Good design, pretty good execution, could use some improvement.
I just received my Charger City cellphone holder yesterday and installed it and took it for a short drive today. Based thereon, this is a preliminary report. My original holder was a typical unit, a suction cup attached to a bean bag at one end and a ball joint at the end attached to my Garmin. I was not happy with that combination for two reasons. First, the suction cup connection would on occasion, unexpectedly come undone, being both inconvenient and raising the possibility of damaging the GPS unit in a fall. Second, When mounted on my dashboard, the unit stuck up so high that, though it did not adversely or dangerously impair my forward vision, this retired--and, no doubt, uptight--attorney could foresee a pissed-off (that's a legal term-of-art, mind you) LEO (that's law enforcement officer, for the uninitiated) citing me for unlawfully obstructing my forward vision, a pure B.S. (that's taurine excrement) cite, but believe me, it happens. My Garmin Model 2699LMTHD (6" diagonal viewing area, 3 3/4" height and 6 5/8" width) just fits within the "jaws" (the slots in the upper portion of the clamp) of the holder. Because the GPS unit is so thick, it fits, but not well, in the teeth. It is O.K., but when I move the units (GPS in the Charger City holder) to and from the dash and floorboard (which I do every time I begin and end a trip, to avoid break-ins and thefts) I feel the need to use extra care, as it appears that the GPS could be easily dislodged from the holder and fall. The holder would be improved if the teeth were a bit larger. My second criticism relates to the base of the unit. While in my limited test I've only driven a few miles, the unit did not move around on my dash. But it did noticeably wiggle or tremble. The main reason for that is that the base is not completely flat. the sides are rounded, allowing the unit to rock a bit, to and fro. While not a major problem, it is somewhat irritating. If the base were completely flat, and perhaps a bit larger, I think that would be corrected. Incidentally, while the GPS unit's power cord would be somewhat cramped near its connection point by the holder's design, that is easily dealt with by simply moving the GPS unit over a bit in the holder's jaws. Overall, given that I've only had the unit a short time, though not ecstatic, I'm pleased with the product. If further experience should cause me to change that opinion, I'll try to remember to amend this evaluation. Update (9/10/15: Now that I've had the unit for awhile, I can add to my earlier, provisional opinion. While I still like the unit, my enthusiasm for it has lessened. While my earlier suction-cup/ball joint GPS unit holder had some serious flaws, as outlined above, one of its features was great, namely, the ability to adjust the viewing angle of the screen of the unit, as the angle of the bright sun relative to the windshield shifted. Using this unit, such adjustment is severely limited. Glare is a serious issue, and though I can lessen its effect, doing so does often reduce my ability to clearly view the screen. Though not a deal-breaker, it is a serious flaw, especially if you live in an area with lots of bright sunlight. I still like the unit, but not as much. In the balance, I still prefer this unit over the earlier one with its flaws. There is room for improving the design, so as to allow adjustment of the angle of the screen between the vertical and the horizontal. ... show more

  • Easy to use, but I found it isn't right for the dash in my car
When I stand my GPS upright in this type holder (ordered this one thinking it was different than my last one) it doesn't stay in the holder - it's forced out and the holder flips shut. If I tilt the GPS more in the holder, it does stay put but the sun glares on it that way so it's not too readable. Perhaps if your dash is sloped more more than mine it would be perfect for you. ... show more

  • It has its pros and cons
This item has its pros and cons. The best thing I can say and that I like the most about this item is its weight. It has a rubber pad on the base that keeps it in place very well. The pad is heavy duty also - so this item is not cheaply made. The clam shell opens and shuts with a strong spring and holds the GPS in place. There are only a few vertical adjustments that can be made with the GPS in the clamshell and those have to be made with both hands. No sideways adjustments can be made without lifting and moving the entire device. You can see from the picture that there are two indentations on the bottom where the GPS bottom edge can be placed. The 2nd indentation holds the GPS screen very vertical whereas the first indentation puts a slight slant on the screen. The top of the clam shell has several teeth that can hold the GPS are various angles. However, I believe most GPS are too tall vertically to fit in other than the 1st or 2nd notch. My GPS is a 4.5" XL TomTom, not new by any stretch of the imagination, and pretty standard in size. I cannot get my GPS in the clamshell past the first notch on the top and the first notch on the bottom without pushing with moderate force. I can jam it in the 2nd bottom notch and the first top notch, but that is as far back as it will go. I think most of the notches on the top clamshell are worthless unless you have a very small GPS. With the extremely limited adjustments that can be made with this holder, I do not recommend it if you like to be able to adjust your GPS for sun glare, visibility, comfort, etc. No adjustments can be made without using both hands - one on the GPS and one to open the clamshell as the spring is strong. I do not recommend this item unless you have a GPS on which the holder has broken or you just need something with which to grip the GPS. I do not care for the suction holders (they never stick long) or those that fit on/in my air vents. My GPS has a broken area in the back that would normally slip around a ball on a TomTom style holder. Due to how my GPS is broken, I'll keep this until I buy a new GPS. It serves it purpose with no frills or options to adjust the angle of the screen. It fits on the left side of my Prius dashboard (can't put it in the middle/right because that is where my dials and readouts are). To hide my GPS in the car and because the holder is quite heavy, and also because the GPS is a pain to take in and out of the holder, I put a baseball-style cap over it when I am not using it. The cap covers the GPS and holder completely. That way I don't have to move or lift it, or take the GPS out of it when I leave the car - both of which are major deals since (1) the holder w/GPS are so heavy and (2) the spring holding the jaws of clamshell is so strong it takes two hands to manage. The baseball cap over the GPS & holder is a perfect solution to no one seeing/stealing the GPS. It looks like someone just left their baseball cap on the dash. Works great for me. ... show more
