  • Features like a smart phone
Big bottons and a texting screen in the display

  • It's complicated... (works with Mint!)
If you're in it for a phone that just works for your elderly loved ones, or just a regular guy in the trades, this ain't it, chief. The battery dies in five hours of light use. However. You can go to the innumerable guides on r/dumbphone and they detail how to debloat this device without rooting it. Once that's done, and battery saver is on, and you don't play with the stupid thing all the time, you can get 48 hours of battery life, easily. Feels extremely sturdy and well made. If you want a phone somewhere between dumb and smart to cut down on digital addiction, this is The One. You can still do the QR code reader thing, text, browse the web, all of it. Spotify, maps, whatsapp, it all works. There's nothing this can't do that a full blown Android phone can. You just don't want to. The whole interface and tiny screen and huge thick body make it very unappealing to spend significant time on this thing. If you want to simplify, and are willing to do a little setup, this is the phone. ... show more

  • Terrific Rugged Phone That's Perfect for Curbing Smartphone Addiction
This is a surprisingly capable phone despite the age of the model itself. It's not a truly "minimalist" phone, nor is it a "dumb" phone. It's actually a fully featured smart phone, just with modest performance specs and storage, encased in a very tough, very rugged body. It has full GPS support, so you can use it for turn by turn directions and navigation, though the small screen may prove a challenge. It has 4G LTE support, not 5G, so you should be able to access internet almost anywhere, despite not being quite as fast as the newest models. It supports a wide range of cell compatibility as well, covering the vast majority of the U.S. So, who is this for? For me, it's been great as a backup phone when I've had to have mine repaired or for when I'm traveling somewhere where I'll be outdoors or in tough conditions. I take it skiing, boating, and to the beach. All it takes is a quick swap of the SIM card and I can move quickly from my fully featured Galaxy Note 20 Ultra to this in just minutes. It's not something you're going to want to use for taking quality photos. The camera is fine, but it doesn't have any fancy post image processing like you'd get with a Samsung. The storage, likewise, is very limited, meaning you're going to lean on your SD card for downloads and photos. You're also going to have to be very choosy about the size and number of apps you download as the internal storage is VERY small. All of that, to me, is a good thing as it gives you the benefits of going "minimalist" without the complete sacrifice of it. You can really pair down your digital footprint without going completely back to the 90s technologically. I recommend it to anyone as a "sports" phone to take on camping trips or as a way to break screen addiction for a 30 day challenge (or more). All in all, it's a surprisingly good phone despite its age. The only thing that really hinders its usefulness is the flip form factor. It's very difficult to use in a car without Android Auto. If you're trying to use this for GPS, it's very hard to find a phone holder that can hold it in the "open" position without it being awkward. If you're willing to accept the challenges, the upside is great. It's very rugged, waterproof, capable, and shockingly functional. My hope is that they'll update this model with more modern internals because it's actually great! ... show more

Ok for 4G. Probably the smartest flip phone I could find. Had to return it though because of signal issues.

  • Very solid basic smartphone
I got this phone mostly as a backup in case my current iPhone fails or gets lost. It is incredibly well made, is solid and both waterproof and drop proof. It would be a good phone to take on a hike, while working outside or doing any physical activity so you wouldn't have to worry about it getting damaged. It isn't indestructible but it looks like it can take a lot of abuse. And if it is lost or stolen the cost is low enough that it won't hurt as much as a $1k+ phone. Included in the box is the phone, a battery pack, a USB-A charger, USB-A to USB-C charging cord, and a USB-C to headphone adapter. It doesn't include any instructions other than a link to the CatPhones website. It took me quite a while to find the manual but I finally found it here: https://www.catphones.com/en-us/cat-s22-flip/ Strangely the manual has a file date of 2021 so I'm not sure how recent it is or if this is just an older phone. The battery needs to be installed first and the cover has a single large screw that you have to undo and it is large enough that you can use your thumb nail or a coin to unscrew it. the cover is still on very tight as it has a gasket that seals it and several hooks at the bottom that need to be popped loose. Inside is a slot for a SIM card and a micro-SD memory card. When I first powered the phone on it came up with it defaulting to Chinese language and I couldn't figure out how to change it. I ended up clicking random things on the screen and in the middle is one link that had a drop down to select English. It doesn't come with a SIM card and it doesn't support eSIM. Even though this is an unlocked phone it appears it only supports T-Mobile and other T-Mobile carriers such as Sprint and Metro. When I put the IMEI number in at T-Mobile it shows up as a "Bullitt CAT S22 Flip" The phone only supports 3G and 4G LTE but that's fine as you aren't going to be watching movies or YouTube videos much on the small screen. The internal micro-SD memory slot supports up to 256Gb. It is nice that the charging port is USB-C instead of something weird like micro- or mini-USB. All in all it is a very well made, extremely reasonably priced phone that gives you reliable basic functionality. ... show more
