  • Worth The Low Cost
Style: Serenity
Update - Now that I have had this for a year, I wanted to update my review. After experimenting with exhaust blower speeds and the air inlet restriction adjustment, this stove works great! The hopper size is definitely it's weak point, but for the money, this stove is completely exceeding expectations. I also figure out the occasional "expansion" noises were due to the fact that I did not have the machine's weight evenly distributed over all four feet. Once I adjusted those to be about even, the only noise is the clinking of the pellets as the come down the shoot. You will need to factor in a time period to figure out the right combination of adjustments based on altitude, pipe length, and pellet quality. Once you do that, it's pretty much set it and forget it. I run it on the #2 setting most of the time and it keeps my 2200 sq. ft. tri-level home plenty warm enough. Below this sentence is my original review from last year when I received the stove. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I need to say that for a $1,000 pellet stove, this thing did not disappoint me at all. I got exactly what I paid for and I knew that when I bought it. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the manufacturer could easily change just a couple of things on this to improve it with minimum impact to the cost, and it would be a top notch bargain. First of all, the shipping was good and it arrived in good shape. I did however need to go through and re-tighten every external screw on the thing. Let's get this out as well - some people complain about the nit-pickiest of things. Yes, this stove makes a few noises now and then from thermal cycling. EVERY stove does. When metal heats, it expands, and the joints are designed for that to "give" a little bit when that happens. Once the unit reaches thermal equilibrium, it is fine. If you are type A, suffer from high anxiety, and every little thing sets you off, you will not enjoy this or any other wood stove. This stove is no louder in operation overall than any others including Harmon. This unit will only run 18 hours on one 40lb. bag of pellets if it's on the lowest setting. On number 3 of 5, it will eat that bag in 12-13 hours. The hopper is truly only built for 40 lbs. of pellets so you will feed this stove at least twice a day. Again, I knew that before I bought it so no docking points there. It burns both soft and hard wood pellets perfectly. You do have to adjust the exhaust fan voltage a bit if opening the inlet gate (Inside the stove) doesn't work by itself. It's a bit of a dance to tune this stove, but once you do, it burns extremely well and very clean. YOU WILL NEED TO BE PATIENT TO DO THAT CORRECTLY. It is a game of wait and see and you need to adjust with small increments. Cleaning is it's strong point. It takes about 2 minutes to clean it and it's as easy as it gets. The blower on this is a bit loud, but not overly so compared to other brands. It does a good job and is fully adjustable for speed. If the manufacturer would increase the size by just a little bit and make it able to hold 50lbs. of pellets, this would make it so much easier to load. As it is, you have to throw a partial bag in to keep things going when it needs more fuel. Also, to clean the blower as they recommend once a month during continuous use, they should use some other type of fastener instead of phillips head screws. These will eventually wear out and need to be oversized once the threads wear out. Lastly, they need to increase the opening of the lid to the hopper. It's just big enough to dump the bag in and if you move even slightly towards the front, you spill pellets on top and get dust down the vent holes. It's a pain when you are in a hurry. This stove is well worth the money though. If you want a top quality stove that will last a lifetime, this aint it. It is however a good quality stove that I expect 8-10 years of operation from with the slightest of inconveniences. ... show more

  • Stop waiting and buy it you won't be disappointed
Style: Serenity 2.0
This has been a great addition this winter wished I'd done it before. Stove is easy to set up and maintain. Puts out great heat really consistent. I can get about 24 hours out of a 40 lb sack of pellets. Saving a lot of money on propane this winter as the pellets in my area are very cheap comparatively. Like I said buy it you won't be disappointed. ... show more

  • Good pellet stove, but...
Style: Serenity
It seems like a nice and well built pellet stove, but we haven't had it long enough to make a full review, but with winter just around the corner I am sure we will put it through its paces, and if anything changes about our opinion about it, I will write an updated review. The stove arrived in good shape and on the promised day. We did notice, that the two screws at the lower corners, which should have secured it to the wood pallet, were just laying there. Since the stove was without damage we didn't give that a second thought, but later found out why they were not attached. Attempting to install the 3" insulated vent pipe it became apparent why those two screws weren't installed. The back panel didn't fit around the vent pipe and the inlet pipe because the holes stamped in it didn't line up. Not sure if this is a problem with the two pipes being too far apart (quality control?), or the stamping of the back plate being off. The back plate was kind of forced or wedged into position, and the 3 screws used had to be forced in order to make them fit, and there was no way the 3" insulated vent pipe would fit unless I did some mods to the back plate. I used a grinding wheel on my drill and got enough material removed from the inlet side to make everything fit and all the screw holes lined up after that. Someone at the factory should have noticed that (and they did since the screws were just laying there in the box) and fixed it right then and there. First time we started this stove up, we noticed that even on the low blower settings, that the partially unburned pellets got blown up and down into the ash bin. This is also called the popcorn effect... We called Castle customer service and was told to close the inlet flue a bit more (it was in half way closed position from the factory). The rep told us, that if we had any other problems related to this, that this was all he could think of, but gave us the ext. to there technical support team, and that we should enter that ext. when prompted, and they could help us if needed. Closing the flue as much as possible helped, and the stove burned nice after that. With my little knowledge about stoves and vent pipes (chimneys), I don't understand why we had to decrease the inlet flue opening. We are using about 5' of 3" pipe and a 3" to 6" adapter to about 15' of 6" stove pipe. Using the larger diameter pipe should in theory decrease the venting, and thus requiring more air going through the stove in order to get a good draft. Besides what we have described above, this is what we have learned about the stove in that little time we have owned and used it: 1. Beautiful design and a size that fits well into smaller areas. 2. Some strange design choices such as: A: Vent pipe located off center, near the edge. B: Ash pan that has to be lifted out after two "ash guides" has been lifted up and secured to the sides on a screw. I can only guess that this was done because they wanted a really tight air box, and an ash drawer would created an air leak. 3. After closing the inlet flue we occasionally get a whistling sound from the stove, especially during start up. 4. This is a very good stove for the money! As an added bonus the extra heavy duty cardboard box and pallet was converted into a bed (house) with lid for our outside cat. That should keep kitty toasty all through winter :) The 4 star rating was given, not because this isn't an excellent pellet stove, but because of a few smaller things that in my opinion adds up to one less star. ... show more
