I have nothing to compare this to. This was used to start my aquarium. My water is very clear and stable. I also have long established live rock. I was happy with the purchase. The sand is very dirty you may want to rinse lightly.

This is the only sand I use in my reef tank. When I set up my tank this is the one I use and when I need to add extra sand this same sand I use. It didn't affect my water parameters. Best of all the water clears out fast so the fish and corals are not irritated when you add this in a running tank.

I bought this because my local aquarium store only sells live sand in 20lbs bags and higher. I have a 5 gal tank, and didn't want to waste 15lbs of live sand. The price for the 5lb bag on amazon was very reasonable, it arrived very quickly, and the sand looks great in my tank. After adding the biomagnet pouch that comes with the sand (and letting it sit over night) my water was crystal clear by morning. Very happy with my purchase. ... show more

If you want to add fish right away ocean direct is great. Dont use instant cycles without reading directions though.

I bought this since I didn't need that much sand for my Sump/Refugium. But when I got this sand it was completely dry and I know for a fact this had no live bacteria inside. I still ended up using it since I didn't need the live bacteria (had live rock) but still would of been nice to have it cycle my tank faster. Anyway if you can its probably better to get this product somewhere else ( I would have but all the stores are around me had no sand b/c supply issues.) Also this isn't really a good value since you can get 10lb live sand worth $10-15 in stores if you can find it and wet not dry like this. ... show more

I'm only giving this 4 stars because Amazon is amazing, but this product actually has some questionable claims/directions. Beware of the "NO RINSING NEEDED" statement, you need to THOROUGHLY rinse this, especially if you have a small tank, and you're OCD about water pristine-ness. This thing will turn your water, and everything in your tank, as if you'd dumped a 10 gallon jug of powder Muscle Milk in the water. Follow the "pre-wash" instructions on the back as a MUST, to avoid killing all the bio load. I had to end up resetting my ENTIRE new nano reef setup and hose it outside, killing all my bacteria in the process (I saved about 1/5 lb of the live sand aside before I did this), because the white gunk was just a pain to see allover my tank.
