Description

For anyone with an EOS R series camera, add the RF50mm F1.8 STM lens to that list. As a 50mm lens it’s already compact, but as part of the EOS R System, it’s even more compact due to its compatibility with an EOS R camera body, so there’s every reason to keep it attached or put in your bag so you can shoot – and get a great shot – anywhere and anytime. Size isn’t all though. As a fixed focal length lens, it lets you be creative with composition and can be used for a wide range of scenes, from snapshots to portraits to landscapes and more. Those images will stand out, too, just like you intend whether on social media or just sharing, thanks to impressive optical features like a PMo aspherical lens to suppress aberrations, coatings to reduce flaring and ghosting, and a large f/1.8 aperture for low-light shooting and circular bokeh. Pick it up and use it one time and you’ll see for yourself, and you won’t be able to leave the house without it.

  • Light and reliable.
This is a great first lens for anyone getting into the Canon RF system. It really helps you take amazing photos and the focal length teaches you to see composition and shoot properly. This is the first lens everyone should own. It is light and quick to focus. It is tack sharp at all apertures and the control ring can be set to a variety of options. • Nifty Fifty, doing Nifty Fifty thing
The Nifty Fifty is an incredible little lens that punches well above its price point. For portraits or isolating subjects, the sharpness and background blur it delivers are stunning. It’s lightweight, compact, and feels like the perfect travel companion for any photographer wanting something simple but powerful. That said, it’s not without its limitations. On an APS-C camera, the 50mm becomes more like a 75mm equivalent, so it feels quite "zoomed in." This makes it less practical for tight indoor spaces or wide shots when you're working in close quarters. If you’re in a small room and trying to fit a group of people or a wide scene into the frame, you’ll find yourself constantly backing up or hitting walls. Despite this, the Nifty Fifty is an essential tool if you understand what it’s built for. Its optical quality at this price is phenomenal, and it’s perfect for portraits, detail shots, or anything where compression and subject isolation shine. Just keep in mind the cropped field of view on APS-C sensors, and you’ll get a lot of joy out of this lens. ... show more

  • Super sharp pictures with this lens!
I've been using zoom lenses for many years, but wanted to try a prime lens and after reading so many positives on this lens, I bought it. I shoot with a Canon R6 and you do NOT need an adaptor for this lens to fit the camera and the pictures I've taken with it are super sharp!! Plus, the price is extremely affordable! The only challenge, where it's a prime lens, you can't zoom in or out, you have to position yourself and the camera a lot more to get the pictures you want. This lens has more of a "zoomed-in" look, so I found that I have to step back further than I'm used to, to get everything in frame. It takes a little getting used to, but the results of this F1.8 lens are very impressive and produce the type of sharpness I've been wanting to get in my photos. If you've been searching camera lenses, you know that they can be very expensive, so with the low price of this lens, it's worth giving a try. ... show more

  • Know Your Camera's Sensor Type - Full Frame or APS-C
The lens is well made and does an excellent job. I wanted a 'nifty fifty' prime lens but, because of my lack of understanding, what I ended up with is an 80mm fixed focus lens. I did not fully understand the differences of the Canon R series cameras; i.e., image sensors and lens types. RF and RF-S lenses work interchangeably. However, an RF lens is intended to be used on a camera with a full frame sensor. And, likewise, a RF-S lens is designed for a camera with an APS-C sensor. Again, while both types are interchangeable, I unwittingly bought this RF type lens for my EOS R camera that has an APS-C sensor. When you mix these apples and oranges, a conversion needs to be made. There is a crop factor of 1.6x difference when a Canon full frame lens (RF) is mated to an APS-C body. Thus, this 50mm prime lens effectively becomes 80mm (50mm x 1.6 crop factor). It's nice to have learned all of this because Canon has an amazing selection of R lenses. I retuned this lens and purchased the 'Canon RF28mm F2.8 STM Lens, RF Mount, Wide-Angle, for Full-Frame Cameras'. Indeed, I purchased another RF lens for my APS-C camera but on purpose this time. Using the 1.6x crop factor, it works out to be about a 45mm and that gets me close to that 50mm I was wanting. One day, when I upgrade to a full frame body, I will have already bought myself a wide-angle lens. As a novice, this has been a good learning experience. ... show more

  • Compact lens, decent performance
I love the small size. Images are sharp at wide open, but bokeh isn’t so nice. Good lens for the price and the light weight/slim profile. I prefer the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 with adapter (EF-R)

  • Amazed
This has out performed my expectations with ease, I find it odd how often I'm reaching for this thing, it serves so many purposes although not as clear as my other multi thousands of dollar lenses its absolutely fantastic for capturing any type of imagery even splicing landscapes and model portraits. The only complaint I may have is its focus isn't always as consistent and a little slower than the L lenses. I would find uses for this at weddings and even a single travel lens. if you have a 24-70 don't bother but its the definition of nifty fifty! ... show more
