  • Wonderful education on the history of cameos.
I was unsure about what book to buy for cameos then I came across several references to this title. Having an whole collection to evaluate I took a chance on this book, but only after previewing it on my Kindle. I have to say that even though it's in black & white on my Kindle, obviously, it still works quite well. I mean we all know what colors and such cameos come anyway, I was interested in the information on how to date, grade and otherwise evaluate the pieces of art that cameos represent. I was thrilled the book did not dwell on the prices side of things. Price is totally subjective anyway. What piece is worth is always what someone is willing to pay for it at that microsecond in time. If you really want to learn how to look at a cameo and know what you are seeing, this is the book I suggest you buy. The authors really did their homework in creating what could well be the definitive reference on cameos and cameo jewelry. Oh, on disappointment with the Kindle version, when you download the book into Kindle4PC, the images are still in black and white, which is a pretty big let down. However this situation is not limited to this book, several other references I purchased as references also lack color images in the when downloaded into Kindle4PC. This will also apply to other platforms on which the Kindle software runs. Amazon needs to fix this glaring situation but it is hardly the author's fault so no deduction on my rating of the book. Just felt it was important to pass along. ... show more

  • Essential for the serious cameo collector!
If you are looking for a "picture book" simply for identification, this is not your book. If, however, you want to develop an in-depth understanding of the history, masterful techniques, varied subject matter of cameos AND see excellent pictures, you can't find a better book. I found that reading various sections as the mood hit me was better for me than trying to read straight through. This is a very well written book, but it is long. Please don't be deterred by that. I found that it was fine to read parts out of order; each section (and even parts of chapters) hang together well & usually don't require that you've read the entire preceding parts of the book. I really like that aspect; it's made this book much more useful to me as a reference as well as a historical work; I'm both a collector & a seller. I think you can tell I think this is an excellent book; I highly recommend this as a "must-have" for anyone serious about cameos. ... show more

  • A most read for collectors
This is an interesting history on the subject. I would have given it a five star rating if more of the photographs were in color. Too many are in black and white.

  • No color photos - regardless of what the cover says/shows!
Be aware -- there are NO COLOR PHOTOS in this version. Advertisements at their website and on other covers mention the color photos, but none exist here.

  • In Depth
A very in depth coverage of cameos. Covers also history and the manufacturing. Also what is important is a certified example of an appraisal.

  • Great Research Book
This book tells the history of cameos. It tells how cameos are made from early days to the present time and discusses various materials used to make cameos. It gives guidance to collectors on how to determine whether the cameo you are considering has value. It is the best research book I have found for the cameo collector. ... show more
