  • Fantastic build despite some very minor issues
Style: AE86 1:12
I'm a big fan of the Initial D anime so seeing CADA release high quality larger models of the iconic cars from the series was very exciting. Takumi's panda AE86 being the most famous car from the series so I knew I had to start with this set. The first thing I need to mention is the quality of the packaging and unboxing experience. The box is huge and inside are two separate shoebox-sized boxes with beautiful artwork from the original artist, (mangaka). I believe CADA sets are officially licensed hence the artwork here. The boxes were so nice I put them on display alongside my completed build. Inside each box were numbered bags of CADA bricks. Building was similar to name-brand Lego; the pieces all fit together snugly and there were no missing or damaged pieces in my set. The provided instruction manual was split into two separate booklets for each box, and I prefer this since it helps keep things divided and organized. This set included fairly high-quality stickers. I didn't mind these two much, though printed bricks would have been preferred. However, my biggest complaint is that some stickers are applied across the side of more than one brick, meaning to disassemble the set you would need to remove and risk damaging the sticker. I also wasn't a huge fan of using stickers for the wheels, and would have liked something similar to the Lego Speed Champions sets that use molded plastic for the rims. I casually worked on this set over the course of a week and I had fun working on it. There were a lot of nice details, like the scaled down engine, pop-up headlights, an interior with reclining seats and controllable steering that actually worked. There is also working suspension in the back which is cool. The building process did have some hiccups though- I had some trouble with the doors in particular when assembling since they were not properly supported until much later in the build, meaning they kept falling off when I rotated the model while working on other parts. Similar story with the rear suspension technic-like mechanism. It wasn't integrated directly into the frame meaning the module would pop off the back until later on when more pieces were added on-top to reinforce the frame. Adding on the windshield part also was a bit of a headache. Overall this set was fantastic. I'm nitpicking a bit because it was such a complex build and want to note some points that might be minor annoyances, but don't detract from the overall experience. The final set is amazing and highly detailed and easily one of the coolest Lego-like cars I've seen. Even compared to the official sets like the Porsche, I prefer the Cada '86 for the looks alone. In addition, the instruction manual provides alternative instructions to modify the set so you can add aero bits, like a front and rear spoiler for a more aggressive look, and a black hood. I decided to mix and match from the alternative builds to make something true to the original anime, but still give it an aggressive tuner-car look. I highly recommend this set since you get a lot of value for the price and get an amazing scale model of one of the most iconic cars in the Japanese enthusiast scene. I can't wait to buy more CADA Initial D sets because the AE86 was simply amazing. ... show more

  • Very nice kit. Great gift - especially for fan of Initial-D.
Style: AE86 1:12
This is a LEGO compatible kit. It's the best off-brand kit I've built, and deserves 5-star. Initial D is a Japanese animated series focused on street racing. From the moment you open the box, you can see the care and quality that's gone into this kit. The outer box is a thick layered cardboard, with substance. Inside are two smaller boxes with very nice graphic art. There are two instruction books. These are nicely printed, on good paper. There are several pages of graphic art before the instructions. The instructions are clearly printed and very understandable. In several spots, there are breakouts which identify potential problem areas and highlight the proper part and/or placement. A good brick-kit has at least one design element which is special or innovative. In this kit, it's the headlight assembly. There's an intricate gearing mechanism which allows you to rotate a gear underneath which raises/lowers the headlights. I didn't quite know how this was going to work until I finished building it. I also found the door hinges to be well designed. I liked that at the end, there were a few additional assembly options. 1) You can replace the white hood with a black one. 2) You can add a front spoiler. 3) You can flip the lower trim on the sides, reversing the angle. 4) There's a different rear spoiler that can be added. These options really enhance the look of the car. I assume that these options correspond to changes in the various print/media versions for Initial-D. There is an option to add LEGO compatible motors, essentially turning this into an R/C vehicle. I doubt that it would create a very satisfying R/C vehicle, and you have to remove some other parts to add the motors. I didn't do this, and frankly, wouldn't recommend it. This kit is very good, but no kit is perfect. Here are the (minor) flaws that I identified: * The doors hang slightly low on the hinges, so the striping doesn't quite line up at the rear of the door. * In my kit, one white roof part had a slight swirl of blue in the plastic. Noticeable, but not too noticeable. Other than this one part, all the parts are well-made and fit properly. * The stickers are very close to the size of the part. I had to use a very sharp knife to trim the edges from stickers which went over. The front bumper sticker is physically larger than the part and definitely needs to be trimmed. The large Japanese sticker on the driver door spans multiple bricks (a pet peeve of mine). ... show more

  • Perfect building set for an Initial D fans out there!
Style: AE86 1:12
I cannot recommend this set enough - I've been playing with, building, and collecting Legos for over 25 years (mostly Star Wars) and I have not had as much fun as I had with building this set in a very long while. It took me quite a few hours to complete, which was surprising. So much detail by who ever designed this! If you like cars and especially if you like Initial D, you need this set! Pros: -exceptional individual piece quality - honestly up to par with Lego's -no broken, missing, malformed pieces -all pieces fit together snugly and connections feel solid -very well designed set with tons of tiny little details - looks almost like the real thing -visually appealing and a fantastic set to display on a stand -easy to read and colored instructions -packaged nicely with numbered bags -tons of extra pieces which is nice (after you get over your initial panic thinking you missed a few steps) Cons: -none that I could find overall - I'm so happy with this build - it's been a while since I've felt this joy from a lego set to be honest and the display with the box is a fantastic addition to my man cave ... show more
