I love ALCAR, I take it every day. I used to take Jarrow, but as I take a lot of supplements, one starts wondering about the fillers in them ... and, who wants to swallow all those pills? This powder does the same job as the Jarrow supplement did, it's less expensive, and it dissolves perfectly in my tea. It's sour, so if you add it to your tea, it will add a bit of a sour punch, like lemon juice (one thing I had to learn is to go easy on the lemon juice in my tea once I use this!). My perfect cup of tea currently is either black tea with a dash of pomegranate juice and ALCAR, or green tea with ALCAR (I add Stevia as well as a sweetener, which apparently this company also carries, for a great price!) I occasionally add a dash of Taurine powder to my tea as well (this is also a very good supplement, available from Bulk Supplements; please look it up online!) and a dash of DMAE powder (also from Bulk Supplements). Taurine is overall great for you, and if you mix it with ALCAR in your drink, it will give you "focus and strength" feeling. I can technically only go by "feelings," but I can't study or perform well at my job without ALCAR! DMAE will give you more of a "I can do it now, fast!" type boost, the "I'm ready!" type response. ALCAR will be more of a better focus. Combine both, you can study, pass a test, work out, lose weight ... you name it. I used to drink a lot of coffee, which by itself isn't a bad thing (there are many studies on coffee's anti-cancer benefits), however a lot of coffee may make you crash ... unless you supplement with ALCAR or DMAE, then that won't happen. Just please be careful with amounts, these are powerful supplements! I tried to add ALCAR to coffee, but as it's acidic, and in my opinion it doesn't go well with it at all. The same goes for DMAE. I added both ALCAR and DMAE to coffee one time, and it didn't quite agree with milk... it turned it into cheese. I suppose if you drink your coffee black and don't mind acidity, or use small amounts of powder, that wouldn't matter. Then of course there are other options, such as, for instance, filing an empty salt shaker (or some other container from a spice) with ALCAR and adding a dash to your salad dressing. It goes well with salad dressings, just as lemon juice would. This method doesn't allow you to measure exactly the amount consumed, but I personally never measure my supplements with a scale, I know quite well what size of a "pinch" I need. Should you do a lot of research before you take anything (like I do), you may have come upon reports of carnitine inhibiting thyroid function. Please note, the reports are for carnitine, not ALCAR, and relatively high doses of carnitine were used as well. If you want to take care of your thyroid (which as I've just read on Dr. Mercola site has a lot to do with one's mental health), you may want to think of iodine supplementation. If you look it up, current US guidelines for iodine consumption are ridiculously low, and nations such as Japanese may consume up to 8,000% of our "recommended daily allowance" of iodine every day. Thus, supplements such as Swanson Ultra iodine supplement, with about 8,000% of the RDA value in one pill, have entered the market, and you may want to consider some sort of iodine supplementation regardless of what other supplements you happen to take. Acetyl L-Carnitine, also known as ALCAR, is a supplement that is becoming more and more popular, especially with the "nootropics" community. After extensive research, I took the plunge and ordered a 100-gram bag. I have tried regular L-Carnitine in the past with no real benefits. However, this was much different ALCAR is an acetylated form of L-Carnitine. It has been shown to enhance transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria, and has been used for anti-depressant effects. Moreover, it has also been used to slow mental decline in elderly patients. It can cross the BBB (Blood Brain Barrier) and act as a potent antioxidant. If you want to check out some studies for yourself, it's worth checking out the studies on PubMed.gov and using your own judgement. First off, the product arrived quickly and looked untouched. Credit for that. Also, on the bag that the ALCAR is in, a handy chart in included for measuring different doses with teaspoons (1/8 tsp, 1/4 tsp, etc). This is a huge plus, especially for those who don't have a digital scale. While it takes doses from 4-6 KG to really experience some side effects, it's always nice to know approximately how much you're taking. The powder inside is the real gem, though. It is plain white with no real smell. It instantly dissolves on contact with water, so any kind of mixing/blending isn't required. I take this stuff immediately after waking up on an empty stomach. Within 10 minutes, I'm feeling MUCH more energized and ready to take on the day. Even when I don't get my nice 8 hours of sleep, I still feel ready for whatever is thrown at me. It's an amazing feeling. One thing to note, though, is that ALCAR doesn't really give you a "stimulated" effect. It's calm, clean energy. In my opinion, it's much better than being jittery with caffeine. Overall, great product. Would recommend to anyone. Pros: Great, clean energized feeling. Mood elevation.
