The clip is sturdy with a wide opening so I was able to secure it to one of the shelves of this wooden plant stand which is approx 2.5" thick. Each light is on its own flexible arm so I was able to position one light on the top level, about 15" from the base and then drop the other arm below and shine plants on the 2nd level. My mom and I got spider plants on the same day. I waited a week to put mine in a pot and she potted hers right away. Mine is way bigger and so much greener!
