  • It's Broken, and you won't want to fix it...
I remember when I bought Broken on the day of its release. I had enjoyed Pretty Hate Machine a lot (still do, actually) but kinda wanted Trent to make the next one heavier. Holy crap was I in for it, because nothing could have prepared me for just how much heavier Broken really sounded. Instead of the calm anger and tempered darkness of the previous outing, Trent pulls out the stops and unleashes a tempest of raw fury on the unsuspecting listener. And even more striking is the use of real instruments and additional musicians to augment Trent's already formidable keyboards. It was a drastic change at the time, one that opened doors to new sounds and musical directions to NIN that might not have happened otherwise. And yet this EP is really just a stopgap between albums at only six songs plus two 'hidden' tracks at the end. I can only give Broken four stars because I wish the band had developed this sound into a full length album. By the time the next album, The Downward Spiral, was released, NIN's sound had evolved further, adding an even more raw and abrasive tone to the instruments while introducing chaotic elements that had not been present before. But by itself or with its catalog, Broken is an ass kicker of an EP that needs no repair. ... show more

  • Full dynamic range. Still sounds great.
I thought I would pick this up just because it's among those old NIN albums which still have the full dynamic range. He did do an only remaster campaign in 2017 for a couple of these older albums, and yes they are quite a bit louder and less dynamic. They still sound good, but I also wanted this foldout digipack just because this one still sounds nice as well and has more dynamic range. Both versions are worth it to hear. But since no other physical version is even available I might as well get this for cheap. BTW Broken is an amazing record. Energetic, brooding, and with a sound NIN does not have on any other release. It's a qualified winner and also just an EP, but it has a brilliant selection of songs. This was all written before the The Downward Spiral broke down the doors in the 90s for conceptual albums of an industrial nature. And it's a wildly different ride very much worth taking. ... show more

  • An excellent addition for any fan. Includes bonus 7'
If you are a serious long time fan of NIN you should definitely own this. I have owned this on all formats and this release is more like a absolute edition. First and most importantly, the album included the additional 7' for Suck and Physical just like the mini cd back in the day. That really made me happy. Then they include extended liner notes which included Trent's original PR for the release. This one really took me back down memory lane. This is a MUST for any true fan. ... show more

  • Perfect for the NIN fan
Packaging, sleeves, download card, and booklets are fantastic. The etching on the 12" is awesome. Broken ha hasd never sounded or looked better than this issue! Just get it!

  • Their/his magnum opus (IMO)
I received this CD as a gift right around the time it first came out. Have to admit that it took me several spins to fully appreciate it. To this day I still think this is their/his best release. It just hits hard and fast without any let up.

  • Broken
This came with the 12 inch album, and 7 inch album as well as a book with stories of life for trent reznor during the recordings of halo 1 to 5. It also comes with digital content, FLAC/WAV/MP3 files to download if you did not already have this stuff beforehand. This album is one of NINs best in my opinion, because of how hard hitting and angry it was. During the mid 90s this album was one of the few that stuck with me over the years. ... show more

  • Bad pressing
Mastering/fidelity is good. Packaging and extras are great. All quiet passages are completely ruined by loud static. Help Me I Am In Hell is ruined by it. Terrible pressing. You could go through hundreds of new records from the 70's and 80's and never find a record with this much surface noise. A joke. ... show more

  • What more could you want?
Love it! Seriously, although /spoiler alert there is only 8 songs /end spoiler alert I love them all, my guideline for buying an album is that I have to like (at the bare minimum) at least half of the songs, in this case I love them all... I usually hear an album online for a month or so before I contemplate to buy the physical copy NIN is one of my favorite artists because I end up liking almost every song for almost every album (and EP in this case) that NIN has produced, but before I recommend this to anyone I first recommend listening to it online An artist/album shouldn't deserve your attention if all they can provide is a one hit wonder, if you really appreciate the artist, show it by buying their albums! As for this album, just hope that whatever you use to play it (which hopefully isn't mono, there IS a warning on the CD case) doesn't have 1 or 2-second delays between songs. ... show more
