  • Works ok
Did not know you can't use it when alcohol is in fluid. Only good for the initial mixing of brew .

  • Pshhhh.... hydrometers.....
So, you make your must, mush, malt, whatever, and then you need to put so much of it in a graduated cylinder to be measured by a hydrometer that you may or may not be reading right because of the angle you're at and how water works with things being put in it etc etc etc. With this guy, you take a couple of drops of your solution and place it on the glass, close the top, TAKE YOUR GLASSES OFF, and look into the ocular (under a light... c'mon....do I have to think of everything?). It will accurately give you your specific gravity reading and has a very wide range in which to read from, unless you're making pure ethanol, then you should probably get something digital. It has made my life easier, and I use less product to get an accurate reading..... and it stops people from taking a huge sample to get the final reading because you know they just want to get trashed when they pull 28 oz. to read from. ... show more

  • Great for pre-boil and original gravity readings
Update- User Error! I’ve adjusted this review as I’ve found that this device is in fact consistent, with my classic hydrometer and my Tilt hydrometer. Refractometers aren’t accurate when there is alcohol in the solution, so final gravity needs to be measured with a standard hydrometer or using an equation based off OG and a correction factor. I’ve tried the calculator in Brew Father, works for the most part, but I stick to the Tilt readings for FG. So given the accuracy in seeing compared to a second device, the readability, and general ease of use, I’ve updated the review to 5 stars. I don’t see how you could have a better product for the price range. I’d highly recommend a Tilt though, they’re handy as hell, just 10 times more expensive and only helpful in fermentation stages! Original review: Given similar reviews to mine, I wouldn't recommend this device. I've brewed 2 beers and 2 hard seltzers while measuring with this refractometer. I thought the first beer was a fluke, and didn't check it with a hydrometer, but this most recent one was so far off that I had to double check it. Results in the attached photos. Every time I've used this refractometer, I've calibrated to zero with the water I was using for the brew. I thought the other negative reviewers might have been off due to operator error, and I could be using it wrong too, but the hour of Youtube I watched on the subject point to a faulty device. ... show more

  • Efficient
Simple model and the material looks a little fragile, but works perfectly.

  • Does what I expected to do
I have been using this item for about 4 months now since I set up a small micro marine tank. I am able to make small adjustment in the salinity of the water fairly well using this tool. The optics are very clear. It comes with instructions for making adjustments. I cannot really speak to accuracy as I do not have anything to compare it to, since this is my only measuring devise. However, when I first set up my tank, it seemed to take a lot more salt than necessary to get the measurement to move from where it was. Since the initial setup, it seems to be working well. ... show more

  • Good enough for home brewing!
I was very skeptical buying a cheap refractometer. I had been using a decent quality hydrometer for years before losing it in last year's move. I was looking to buy another hydrometer when I found this. Uses way less fluid and get more accurate results? Yes please! But I was doubtful with how accurate it would be. I haven't gotten to use it with anything I've brewed yet, but I tested and calibrated with distilled water, and it came almost perfectly zeroed out. I tried it with a couple of different sugary drinks and all read within about 5% of what the label on the drinks claimed, which is good enough for me. I'm not using it in a scientific setting, I'm using it to figure out how much alcohol is in the drinks I brew. For me, it's more than accurate enough and I can't wait to use it instead of a hydrometer and graduated cylinder. Only downside is, you'd better have a VERY bright light or be able to easily take it outside to get your readings. Very hard to get a good reading inside, but you can get really good readings even on a cloudy day if you poke it out a window or door. ... show more
