I wish I had gotten this sooner…it would have saved me a lot of time/hassle. Basically, the Breville portafilter allows you to select an insert that makes either one or two shots of expresso. That's super nice…but the problem is when you want to clear the portafilter of used coffee grounds. Because the one/two shot insert is removable, it always pops out whenever you try to clear ("knock") the portafilter. The Breville knock box has a transverse bar (which you can easily see in pics of the box)…it is made of some vaguely rubbery material that has a tiny amount of "give"…so that portafilter isn't damaged when you "knock" it…but it also prevents the portafilter insert from popping off…allowing you to easily clean the portafilter. Since I use my Breville Bambino at least once a day to make cappuccino, I really love this knock box…it makes cleaning a lot faster. ... show more

You can hit you porta filter on this pretty hard without worrying about breaking either. It has the same grey plastic and brush finish as the Breville Espresso machines although the brush on the knock box is is slightly more pronounced.
