  • A very good router for specific jobs due to it's design
Style: Router Tool Combo Kit
What is the key feature that makes this router especially useful for some tasks compared with others I own? It's the depth setting adjustment, shown at the left side of the first image. It covers a wide range with fairly granular control of the depth steps. Why is this useful to me? This current project is a good example- speaker cabinet front panels fabricated from hard rock maple ply. This is serious stuff for power tool woodworking, cabinet grade MDF is like butter or cardboard in comparison. So, it's pretty mandatory when doing a deep route to use a number of shallow steps and a slow feed. This fixture makes that very straight forward, and very repeatable when doing multiple routes of the same dimension (second image, routing cut outs in progress for the inner front panel of an LF module for a high end speaker system. It's easy to calibrate for a consistent starting point and getting very exact results for a number of operations. Now, no router I've found is the perfect router for every job. This Bosch tool is very well built, has excellent torque and speed control, and with the additional fixed base can handle a variety of jobs. Where some might find it lacking is having a comprehensive dust collection feature built in with a clear dust dust shield over the working area, like some DeWalt and Porter Cable 1/2" shank routers I own. But that same dust shield can limit the utility - specifically, the depot of plunge for the router, and the depth of cuts. Here, on this project, I'm working with 1-1/4" maple ply and 1-1/2" maple ply, and doing cuts between 1" and 1-1/4". This isn't possible with the routers featuring the dust collection and dust shields, because of the limit these place on plunge depth with multiple passes. This is why I tend to have multiple routers chosen and setup for specific jobs, and leave them that way once things are dialed in. I have three of the Bosch 1617EVS now for that reason... two with plunge base setup, one with fixed base. The other thing I have found very useful with this Bosch model is the accessory template guide adapter and templates. Here are pictures of the base with the template guide and a short adapter for 1/2" solid carbide spiral up cut bit installed, in the "baseline" position and extended. One of the 1617EVS is always setup with this adapter. What I find the fixed base configuration useful for is trim functions using follower bits of various types- from setting the rebate for a high frequency driver after boring the original hole with a Forstner bit, or trimming a side or inner route flush using a 1/2" shear trim bit. I have jobs for which this configuration works better than my 1/4" shank trim routers. ... show more

  • Excellent Router
Style: w/ Deluxe Router Edge Guide
So far, I have enjoyed using this Bosch router. It came highly recommended both online and among friends who use them often. It is well-built and has a quality feel. The adjustable speed is also a plus. A great buy that works well. I expect to have it in service for a long time.

This router is amazing, great value for your money especially if you buy it when it goes on sale. Has great power and speed control. I liked it so much I will be ordering another one specifically for my router table. Plunge base is one of the best and easiest to use. The fact that it has the capability for both 1/4 and 1/2 bits makes it versatile for any application. ... show more

  • Turns wood into butter with any bit.
Style: Router Tool Combo Kit
***Update*** 24Feb2014. I was at the point of returning this router to get the dewalt because of the base plate. The base plate does not accept standard bushings that come with the PC Dovetail Jig or anything else for that matter. I was at full irriation when I purchased a Milescraft Universal base plate that adapts all the bushings in the world and their own size for the sign kit. It is available at Lowes. This will allow you to adapt the bushings. The silly part, I can't close my nifty Bosch case to travel with my router without having to do some cut work on the internals of the case. ridiculous, yes. I hope bosch will make a custom base plate soon to fix this because their adapter to adapter to bushing process has too many connections for me to feel positive about it. 17Feb2014. I read tons of reviews and my decision came down to the Bosch 1617EVSPK and the 618PK DeWalt. I chose the Bosch out of pure trust in the reviews and two features I talk about below. I have run around 5 different bits on the regular scrap materials in the garage and this is as quiet as my top of the line miter saw from DeWalt. It is multiple times quieter than my circular saw. I'm very impressed with the full speed noise as I can do router work while the baby sleeps inside of the house. Very awesome. The only problem I have right now is when I loosen the collet, it free spins for a rotation, then it gets tight again. Kind of a pain when I am testing it out and learning. I imagine this is something with all router collets as you are loosening something spinning 24k rpm. The plunge base is strong. Although, it is a consistent resistance all the way to the bottom allowing for muscle memory to make a consistent plunge cut. Adjusting the depth stop on the plunge base is a little different that what I am used to but I haven't used it yet, so I will have that figured out in a day or so. The fix base is very nice. The wooden handles make this router very classy and might have helped win me over. The course adjustment is very nice to speed up the bit movement. The fine tuning is just fine. It works great for handheld use. This also has the "above the table" adjustment that supports full table mounting. This is another feature that supported my purchase. Long term is always considered when I make purchases. I'll update more after I put more hours on this but I doubt I'll be making any changes. ... show more
