The kit contains everything you need to start bonsai trees. I do recommend getting a bigger pot and replacing the peat soil with akadama soil after the seeds germinated. In my experience, the Picea Abies seeds have the low germination success (1 out of 4 seeds) and Jacaranda Mimosifolia (2 of 6 seeds). The Jacaranda Mimosifolia takes a long time to germinate so be patient with that one. Pinus Arista and Delonix Regia were able to germinate successfully and rapidly although scarification is recommended for Delonix Regia since its shell is extremely hard and waterproof. NONE OF THE SEEDS REQUIRES STRATIFICATION PROCESS. :D Don't expect immediate results and beautiful trees since these are seeds and requires years to grow before training. Overall, a good and well-priced kit for a beautiful ancient art. Update: 3 months All the trees are growing nicely. One of the Delonix died, the other is starting to die. Found out they are really sensitive to water and temperature so do not over water it/leave in extreme temps. (The leaves open and close in relation to environmental condition) This has happened before but it came back. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE PEAT SOIL FOR THIS TREE. The Jacaranda Mimosifolia starts off slow but began to grow really rapidly; main trunk is starting to show signs of barks and hardening. The remaining pine-like trees are still alive but grows really really slowly, not much noticable growth since one month in. ... show more

I bought this with a gift card I got for Christmas. I have two black thumbs, but I'd like to change that, and growing a tree from a seed sounded fun. I started just planting the Norway Spruce. The instruction booklet was very clear and easy to follow, but I was disappointed to see that 3 of the 5 seeds floated and so were not good for planting. Of the two that were plantable, one sprouted. It would be nice to get a few more extra seeds because it seems like it would be easy to get 5 bad ones that won't sprout, but maybe the company would send more seeds in that case. I got my first little sprout a few weeks after planting, and of course that was the day my brother's dog found the pot and tore it up. I managed to recover my little guy and replanted him, and a week later he's still sprouting, so hopefully he'll keep it up. Overall I think this is a nice kit and easy to use. If you're ready to try your hand at growing your own bonsai, this is worth the money. Edit 4/8/2020: I did end up having two of the seed types fail, so I contacted the company to see if they'd send me replacement seeds, and they did! 5 stars well earned. ... show more

Easy steps to follow and great for beginners. After almost 6 weeks, only 2 of the 4 trees sprouted. I believe the time frame for most of these trees were 3-6 weeks depending on the species. I’m a little disappointed neither of the two colorful trees sprouted. However, prior to planting them, there were instructions to submerge them in water and only plant the ones that sunk to the bottom. All of my stayed afloat unless poked down, with the exception of the Royal poinciana (that one was just bigger and sunk immediately after being placed into the water). I planted all the seeds according to the instructions whether they floated or sunk because most of mine stayed afloat. So I probably planted a few unviable seeds. Regardless of 2 not sprouting, I am still having a great time with the pine and spruce trees that did. It’s important to remember that you are buying a product to help you grow a bonsai tree from seeds. A fully grown bonsai takes decades to grow. However, Planters Choice gives you all the tools you need to be start off in the beginning stages. There are still many other variables that go into the process of growing these trees from the seed. Excellent starter kit! Planted all four trees, and the seeds are already sprouting. It came with a detailed instruction booklet and couldn’t have been easier. Can’t wait to start trimming my own bonsai and sculpting!
