  • Excellent bonsai soil. Inconsistent mix from bag to bag
Material Type: All-Purpose Size: 2.25 Quarts
First off - this is good bonsai soil. I have used the all-purpose soil twice over the course of 3-4 years to repot my bonsai (two varieties of ficus, kept indoors). They have thrived, so I have no real complaint. However, I have noticed soil inconsistency in the bags themselves. The bag I had 2 years ago was much more fine and closer to dirt, the bag I ordered the other week was mostly small porous lava rock (perfectly fine and expected), but the second bag I ordered a day later of the same was more mixed with mulch/fertilizer (had a distinct manure smell). These were all the same all-purpose bonsai soil, but came out starkly different. Again, they all worked, but I would prefer better consistency in the same advertised product. ... show more

  • Too course by itself
*UPDATE 5/26/23: Eventually my bonsai seemed to struggle and have stunned growth and water started standing on the top of the pot. Soil doesn't seem worth it. Im someone who didn't read reviews before making the purchase, so when it came it I was shocked to find water would pool on the surface of the pot and spill over when I first repotted my bonsai. However, after seeing reviews and learning that that is a common issue I decided to repot again only this time I mixed the same soil with river pebbles (photo is after said pebbles were added), added a layer of pebbles to the bottom of my planter, and the drainage was PERFECT. Water no longer pooled on the top. I was able to gently add water until the drainage began to run clear of tiny debris that won't stay in the pot. I feel confident in this soil, however time will only tell based on what growth she'll do. I also included another picture of how wet the soil gets when watered, it does seem to hold quite a bit of water. ... show more

  • Excellent soil for mixing.
Material Type: All-Purpose Size: 2.5 Gallons
I have used this soil as a "Organic BASE MIX" for all my bonsai for almost ten years now. Its very good as a base mix, BUT it is expensive. Considering that I mix this with other types of soil, (i.e. deciduous, conifer, etc..) it can get expensive, but when it comes to my trees, old, young, VERY old, it has performed so well, I'll spend the money. You can use this as a single soil, but depending on if you need slow, fast or very fast draining, it might need to be mixed with other grit types. This by itself, drains slow, but holds moisture. If you like faster draining soil, mix it with a bigger grit like a deciduous or confer mix. In all my years using this, I have NEVER had a tree die from this soil. The people saying their tree died after using this soil had other issues. Re-potting can be a delicate process depending on the tree and can have consequences. Know how much moisture your tree will need, how often you plan on watering, mix it accordingly. ... show more
