  • Gambler >> Duke Cannon Bourbon
Scent: Bourbon, Tobacco, Leather
*LONG REVIEW WARNING* I purposefully waited until I received Duke Cannon's Bourbon solid cologne before writing this review, just so I could compare the two - in fact, having never used solid colognes before, I took a chance with the Gambler as the description seemed right up my alley (and it delivered), even though the reviews for the Duke Cannon product made me think it may be just as good, or better. Here's the thing: most people buy something off the internet and convince themselves it's what they really wanted, because they don't wanna waste money and do a side-by-side comparison - but I did. First off, you must realize that the Gambler and Bourbon are targeting the same audience - people who want to give off a warm, inviting scent of bourbon not like a drunk, but like you walked into a rustic tavern that specializes in high-end whiskey, with those planks comprising the floor and craftsmanship oozing off each article. It's about the subtle ambiance that signals you're a hard-working man with a vision who has earned that sipping whiskey at the end of the day, and the warmth of the booze is expediting your leisure activity (which you still execute with finesse). The Gambler will satisfy the above whereas Bourbon will make you smell like someone who just graduated from Axe body spray, by spending about the same amount of $. The Duke Cannon take was everything I *didn't* want in a bourbon-inspired solid cologne, with its pungent, alcoholic, nondescript, semi-suffocating smell reminiscent of cheap department store spray-on cologne - it's for the man without class, dousing himself with an allergy-inducing redolence with the hope of getting lucky at the mainstream club. Outlaw Soaps' Gambler has DEPTH, a warm fragrance of the highest quality bourbon, caramel malt sweetness, strong but well-balanced apricots, and a *hint* of expensive, well-crafted leather, JUST AS ADVERTISED (sans the welcome surprise of the apricots). It's more subtle than Duke Cannon, but I realized that I don't *want* to smell like the over-cologned douchebag in a room with genuine/real people in close quarters - it's more about being a man who smells HELLA good & unique to boot, without bullying another's bubble. A woman worth the trouble will pick up on this. Their customer service was also excellent initially when I expressed interest in buying more of their products (they sent me samples of all their soaps very quickly just so I could make a decision), but when I expressed concern over the negative reviews of another one of their products, I almost got the feeling of being ghosted. However, my mind has been blown by literally every concoction of theirs that I've tried, and that includes the soap sample bundle, the Magic Beard & Hair Elixir, and of course the Gambler - so I'm not too worried in terms of authenticity of scent, performance, and beyond excellent quality from this brand in general. Last but not least, you have to warm up the cologne and apply it before you judge the scent as it *can* remind you of a scented candle - as some reviewers have stated to my erstwhile concern - when you open the tin (although oddly that association, even without warming the solid, seems to pretty much go away after a while once you fall in love, as I did, with the depth and nuances of the scent profile). At the end of the day, I can look past Outlaw Soaps' flaw with oddly and alternatingly enthusiastic then cold customer service (on just one occasion out of several extremely positive ones) - and I can do this because they make it count where it effing matters. No-one else out there comes anywhere close to the richness, complexity, uniqueness, and sheer creativity of their scents - they're *artists,* and it takes one to know one. Lately my body/mind had been naturally craving aromatherapy, and from that perspective, thank God Outlaw Soaps exists. You deserve five stars because you're SOMETHING ELSE altogether - like a temperamental Greek God who's still above and beyond the best human. ... show more

  • From 1 star to 5 stars
Scent: Bourbon, Tobacco, Leather
New edit: FRON 1 STAR TO 5 STARS I bought The Gambler on a whim. You can see my complaints below. Now, I'm not saying it's not a great product, because it is. The Gambler is a very unique scent and does smell exactly as they described it leather Bourbon and tobacco. It's just wasn't for me. I loved the idea behind the product and it is well made and marketed. When this company reached out to me and asked me how I like their product, I let them know that the scent wasn't for me and I probably would not be purchasing again. The response was quick and sincere. She offered to send me out a new scent free of charge and she also included a sample of the soap. I got Blazing Saddles this time along with fire in the hole the sample soap. Although Blazing Saddles again is not my kind of scent, it did smell a lot better. Fire in the hole is amazing. It's like a piney campsite smell. It, again, is not for me. I'm a white Seattle guy who works in finance. I am not NEARLY cool or tough enough to pull off this smell. It is a wonderful product and even better company. I apologize to the woman who listened to my concerns, I forgot your name, but you are exactly the perfect person to represent a company. I will be buying more of this product as gifts to my more manly friends. Great job all around ORIGINAL: Not what I was expecting. I thought the idea as great as well as the marketing, and I really wanted to like it, but this scent is just... Off. It smells like leather saddle balm (which is a fond memory of mine) in the worst way possible. Like a scented candle was burned under a saddle? I tried it out and it was, meh. I got to my girlfriends house and she didn't tell me until later that she thought I smelled like a flea collar. Needless to say, I'm bummed. The description was really interesting and maybe another scent would be better, but I am not spending any money to find out. ... show more

  • Smaller then it appears
Scent: Cedar and Campfire
Unique, one of a kind smell. Lasts a good long while. Does leave one with a nice hint of the outdoors and camping

  • Not my style...AMENDED
Scent: Leather, Gunpowder, Sandalwood, Sagebrush
It really doesn't last that long, maybe just a few hours. "Blazing Saddles" suppose to be like leather, gunpowder, sandalwood, and sage. Maybe a little bit of wet leather and a whole lot of sage. More like a spicy cinnamon Christmas candle or some potpourri. This is a little overbearing for my taste. Maybe some of the other ones are more suitable. I've spent most of my life outside in the middle of the woods or the mountains and around ranch animals, so it's gotta be real country for me. AMENDED...Sorry this is so late, I live in the middle of nowhere, so I don't go out as often as other people. The company contacted me about my experience with the "Blazing Saddles" and sent me a a whole sample pack of different scents to try. Some just aren't me, but that's to be expected. I really like the "Calamity Jane". It has a fresh, clean smell without leaving you smelling like a pine tree or a bar of soap. It's kinda like my sister's orange rum cake, except she's a little heavy on the rum. I really like the little plastic containers. Small enough for your billfold or pocket and convenient for when you need to dab a little on the go. These guys are the best, hands down! ... show more

  • Not good in heat
Scent: Bold, Inspiring Variety of Scents
All 6 of the samplers were melted and leaking throughout the bag when delivered. After cleaned up and cooled down I have about half of each tin left, and all but one smells very close to the same. I don't know if the similar smell is from the heat damage, or if that is the product itself. That being said the smell is nice, the tins are incredibly small and packable (but don't leave in your pocket or a hot car). ... show more
