This is a great cnc. it is well built and has a good size work area. Took two days to assemble. The directions are well thought out with many pictures. Was very solid after assembly. Had an issue with initial use but received immediate help from Bob and got the issue resolved quickly. I initially tried a 3018 desk top model from another company and could not get help resolving the issues. I bought this CNC based on my research comparing feature/ price ratio and customer reviews vs. other products in the market. Assembling it was more involved than I had planned for, but the user manual is very comprehensive and at the end well worth the effort when you see your machine come to life! I am still learning the basics, but so far I am very happy with it, performing without a hitch so far. BTW, the customer service is top notch: While staging the parts for the build I thought i am missing two parts and wrote to support - Bob and Pamela responded within a few hours and FedExed those parts overnight without any questions. It turned out that I had misplaced the parts and nothing was missing (i did offer to cover the cost but they refused - thank you!) ... show more

In short, if you are looking for a wood carving CNC then this is the one to get. I'm an EE with lots of circuit design experience and I did lots of research for this purchase. It wasn't easy to assemble.. well, ok it WAS easy but it did take quite a bit of time. The instructions were clear and there were no missing parts. Everything went together as expected. There were a few times when the instructions were a little vague but I was able to figure it out. I'm not going to dwell on the details, but as a newbie to CNC here are some things that I would have liked to know about my purchase: 1. You need to buy some router bits and a 1/4 to 1/8" collar. The bits are typically "end-mill" or "ball-end". I bought two sizes of each type 3mm and 6mm. The collar is needed because the router only takes a 1/4" bit. 2. You will need a dust collection system. I bought one for $160 from Harbor Freight. You will also need a very good quality hose. 3. You will need a dust 'boot'. Believe me, this is a 'must have'. It can make the difference between a room full of dust and almost no dust at all. Get one from Etsy, just search "Bob's CNC Dust Boot". 4. Eventually you will need a gCode sender device. This device feeds the CNC machine with gCodes from Aspire or whatever design software you are using. You CAN use your computer but it's much better to have a dedicated machine. I use a RaspberryPI with the program bCNC (yes, weird that the gCode sender has the same name) since I am very familiar with the machine and got up to speed quickly. Just do a Google search on "bcnc raspberry pi" and you'll find it. 5. You will need to change bits, and the dust shoe will get in the way of the router lock button. I found that you can drill a hole at just the right place and insert a 4-40 screw through the dust shoe and into a hole in the lock button. Instead of removing the dust boot I simply press this screw to lock the router shaft. Instead of using the flimsy and cumbersome router bit wrench I use a 'long' socket wrench that I made to fit the router collar. Now I can change bits in about 20 seconds. 6. Bob (THE Bob) is obviously a great engineer and businessman. I left him a message about adding an automatic switch for my router and dust collector and he answered promptly and professionally. I don't thing I've ever spoken to the actual designer of such a great product.     • Great starter machine & great resources at your disposal
Let me first start by stating this is my First CNC machine. Package arrived on schedule and well protected. Nothing was missing and the. CNC was very well packed, Overall quality of materials in the kit is very good for a starter machine, It took approximately two full days to assemble, but that assembly is invaluable to fully understanding gantry orientation and safety limits of the system and design. My main disappointment lies in the Z drive screw. Specifically, the amount of play the screw has while threaded into the drive nut. There is nearly 1/4” of motion any direction despite how steadfast the nut is secured into the z carriage. This makes a good stable alignment of the screw to the motor near impossible and causes moderate wobble of the z carriage during full range of vertical motion. I could see the z wobble becoming an issue as I take on more challenging projects which require a greater level of precision. Luckily the wobble is small as you get closer to the work surface. X and Y directional movements are really smooth. I was overall surprised at the rigidity of the gantry assay when fully assembled {except the z drive). I have not spoke with anyone from Bob.s CNC about the z drive observations at the time of writing this review. Bob’s website and YouTube channel are excellent resources for beginners, The installation manual took you through every step of the process and the vast amount of videos will take you through all software installation and operation to get you started. All in all a great starter machine for the beginner. Although, I do see myself outgrowing it in a fairly short time, I think it’s a great purchase to learn on, (and more importantly error on) before you embrace your inner engineer and decide to build your own from scratch. . ... show more
