This is a great reference book. I also purchased Greg Paolini's "Kitchen Cabinets Made Simple" book and The New Yankee Workshop Kitchen Project DVD set. I found all 3 essential when building my kitchen cabinets. Here's why. This book book is more focused on the details of cabinetmaking. It does have a good overview, face frame vs. frameless, joinery options, material choices, etc. However, i found that the detailed dimensioned drawings the best part of the book. He also gives his opinion of what dimensions work well for him, such as face frame rail and stile widths and drawer dimensions. Color photos would be a big improvement over the black and white photos, but the photos are clear. The Paolini book provides a very good overview as well as a focus on joinery and the mechanics of cutting and assembling. Simple, basic techniques such as pocket hole and screwed butt joints are covered. These techniques may not necessarily be the "best" techniques but the title of the book does set the expectations; "Made Simple". It's a good introduction. The Paolini book is illustrated with color photos and the DVD video provides a lot of information that can't be shown as well in photos or words. I would recommend buying both books. While there is some overlap in information there is sufficient detail in each book to make the purchase worthwhile. The Norm Abrams DVD was great but a bit expensive at $100. ... show more

    • Good read
As a beginner I found this book educational and informative. However, many photographs don't quite make things clear (maybe it's just me), although the drawings and diagrams are great. Also, it felt like towards the end Mr. Lang was rushing to finish the book as it seems a bit less detailed compared to the beginning of the book. It is a great book as it has shown me what I don't know, and as a beginning woodworker, I don't know many things, and many of them are outside of the scope of this book, like how to cut parts so they are the same exact size... I did say I am a beginner :-) Overall great read. And I am greatful that it has shown me what other knowledge I lack, so I can read more and learn before I turn a bunch of expensive stock into mulch. [Edit]Based on some other books I've read, I am now rating this book at 5 stars. My complaint about "feeling rushed" towards the end was that I had wished that it went a bit more into detail regarding finishing. I now realise that was a somewhat unreasonable expectations. This is by far the best book I've read so far that covers kitchen cabinets, and even other built-ins. ... show more

I purchased this book since I lost my cabinet making book. I found this book to be a lot of talk, but little in the way of actual details, such as measurements, in cabinet making. I had the wood, glue and saw. I wanted a book that would give me actual details on making a cabinet. Instead, I got a lot of definitions and pictures. If you're ready to build a cabinet, go to your local library and find a book that gives you actual measurements and step by step instructions. ... show more

The majority of books on cabinet making on the market are at best sub par. They usually cover the basics, and one will leave out what the other puts in and vice versa. You need an arsenal of books to get everything essential for beginners to start cabinet projects. I can safely say after reading and completing a set of cabinets from plans in this book, that it's all right here in one book. The descriptions, black and white photos from tools to materials to plans are very good. If this is a first book for you on cabinetry covering all the basics, I'd definitely start here. In fact, I've sold all the other books on this subject here on Amazon. This book is that definitive. ... show more

    • If you plan building any cabinets, this is a good book to have
I bought this book because I wanted to learn how to build cabinets. I've been doing woodworking for many years. The book is easy to read and has a lot of good information in it. I have read other books and got some good info from them, but this is the best as far as the information to get started learning how to do it. I just started my first set of custom cabinets. They are coming along great. After reading this book, I was ready to get started. I would have given 5 stars, but the pictures. Use scrap wood and get some practice. Do some small projects to build your skills, then build some cabinets for your shop or garage. This is a good book to have no mater your skill level. ... show more

Bob Lang is an expert cabinetmaker and general woodworker with a great deal of experience in both. He is a Senior Editor at Popular Woodworking Magazine, which is, in my opinion, the best woodworking magazine available. His projects are featured regularly in that magazine. This book is not only instrumental to anyone who wants to build kitchen cabinets, it also teaches and illustrates a lot of basic woodworking techniques. The principles contained here apply to all casework construction, not just kitchen cabinets, so this book is valuable for all woodworkers. ... show more

    • Too high level for go-to reference
The author does a very good job explaining the decisions one encounters designing a set of cabinets but leaves out any real instructions on how to actually build them. The book is much too high level for someone creating their first cabinet and the drawings are not clear enough to base your own designs off of. There are several shop drawings in the book that the author references as standard but later says that he never uses those same dimensions when he builds. This is very confusing and the mix of dimensions across shop drawings makes it even harder to understand. There are no actual dimensions or cut lists for standard boxes which I thought would be included in a book of this type. This seems to be aimed at someone looking to start up a new cabinet shop, not for the novice cabinet builder. ... show more
