  • Understand what to expect
The expectation I had when I bought this was based on online research and reviews. It is a lathe that you can disassemble to the point where you can lift separate components and put wherever you want without heavy rigging. It will make serviceable cuts on aluminum, brass, and steel- AFTER YOU DO A LOT OF WORK ON IT. It will never be a lathe that you can take heavy cuts and do production work, it just doesn't have the size or mass and never will. Comparable size lathes of heavier construction and delivered quality are more expensive and less portable. You do get what you pay for and mass does count in machine tool rigidity. Many will correctly tell you this is essentially a "kit that arrives assembled". You will need to fully or almost fully disassemble, clean, file, stone, machine, replace some items, and alter some design features before it operates at its weight class capability. Some of these handworking operations are going to wear you out, an example is correcting the variation in thickness at the back of the ways. You can run it without this correction, but it will run better with it. At time of this review, I'm in the middle of that. You'll need the lathe running to make some of the parts to make it run better, expect to take some pieces apart more than once. There is a lot of help for these repairs and upgrades online, no really useful info is in the supplied manual. Everything I've read or seen in videos so far is true - mine came with all the expected original design limitations and final finish/assembly deficiencies. The seller was extremely good to work with. I reported the unexpected issue of lathe way pitting and non-functional lead screw gearing. The lathe pitting is not correctable, but won't affect operation - just looks nasty, the only positive is it will likely help hold oil on the ways just like the way scrapings on higher end machines but less pretty. I expect the gearing problem to be correctable by resetting the control positions and adding spacers per an online video. The seller was extremely reasonable in refunding money vs a return ship, them replacing the ways and fixing the gearing (hope springs eternal, lol), and shipping to yet another customer. Do your research before purchasing so your surprises are limited. If your machine fixing skills are not up to par or you just want an out of the box perfect lathe, this is not the one for you. If you like the challenge or don't have the money or space/handling capacity/need for a higher quality/heavier machine, this one might be a fit. ... show more

  • If you are looking for an out of the box plug and play this ain't it
If you are looking for an out of the box plug and play this ain't it. At first glance all and all this is a well designed machine. And as with all equipment of this type you will need to clean all the corrosion protection off and lube it properly. that is to be expected. upon doing so I found that in spite of the coating there was still rust in places. Further inspection found many casting flaws that were left and many of the screws were of the wrong length. Those that were too short were stripped and those that were too long were shimmed with multiple washers. Quite a few were galded from over tightening. Setup was quite a challenge. Nothing was set correctly and I had to shim or mill parts to get them to align properly. The dead center was off by .145 inches, not even close. Once set up to use I found that the auto feed speed and direction selectors would not easily change. I took gearbox off and the selector forks were so loose they flopped around the shaft holes. The indexing bearings on the selector knobs did not engage in the indexing notches well. One of them had 2 ball bearings to take up the slack caused by a too short spring. This was easily fixed with an adjustment in a screw that was provided by the designer for that purpose. This machine has some good potential to if the assemblers would just do their job. I feal I purchased a factory 2nds length put together by students with no quality control. As I said it is a good design but the assembly is second rate at best. If I had it to do again I would by the same design (I know that they are available from different assemblers under different brand names) but from a different brand. The best I can do is 3 stars and I think that is generous. ... show more

  • Good little machine
Nice little lathe for the money it took a lot cleaning smoothing and shimming to get everything moving smoothly it is a fun little tool took a star off because there are no locking screws on any axis of the machines only gib adjustments and the machine shuts itself off when you switch into reverse and seems to run the spindle at different speeds when switching between forward and reverse at the same setting which I found odd. There is enough left to be desired to where I will still buy a used full size lathe even bolted down there is little rigidity. But for the money and size it seems to be the best mini lathe on here ... show more

  • Difficult support
Missing parts, no parts breakdown, have to go through middleman to get answers and hopefully parts needed, instructions and pictures very vague. Think twice before buying.

  • Good but needs some cleaning
For the price its not actually all that bad. It must be "tuned" completely torn down and some cleaning and smoothing before actual us

  • Bad idea
Very poorly made. Deflection under Very small loads is excessive. Nearly impossible gear change because the gears are not labeled. Overall quality is terrible!
