  • Don't let the handle fool you, this is a serious knife!!
I have had pocket knives my entire life and had to use them as a part of my job for many years. They are a very personal tool that you rely on and develop a pretty personal relationship with. I have had cheap knives and expensive knives and everything in between. Over time you realize that a cheap knife is not only not as nice but in many cases can be dangerous. So I tend to buy middle range to slightly expensive now and keep it longer. I only buy American made now not because China is evil or any other country is good or bad but because I like buying something from a smaller and more local company that pays attention to details. You get what you pay for is really true. This is my first Benchmade, before this I have had Kershaw US made and Zero Tolerance as my main EDC knives. I have found US made Kershaw knives to be a great value and Zero Tolerance to be just great. So this Benchmade was a shock when I first got it. For $130 I was expecting full stainless steel tangs along the grivory handles and that is not what I got. So I was going to return this knife because even though it is not clearly stated that this knife has a nice stainless steel blade attached to a plastic handle that has metal tang that attaches to the the blade about less than half way. When you grab the plastic handle it will flex under pressure which gives a bad impression. It seems like you could just break the handle yourself if enough pressure is applied which gives a very weak impression of durability and long term strength. I know this is an entry level knife from Benchmade offering superior blade steel and the reason the knife does not cost more and is very light is because of the construction as I mentioned earlier. I decided to keep the knife because I really like the light weight and the blue grivory handle is actually very pleasant to grab. I also like the blue anodized bolts that keep the knife together and the thumbstuds that are also light blue anodized aluminum. Once I made that decision I thought to myself this will just not be my heavy duty knife. Since I have had it the blade is really impressive for the price. I don't think there is another American made knife using this blade steel at this price. If Benchmade did not offer a good warranty then I would have returned the knife but since they cover it for life under normal conditions I figure that the grivory handle despite not having full metal tangs is still strong enough to get the job done and if I have a problem I am sure Benchmade will take care of me. Why this knife is a keeper in any collection? It is really light which makes carrying it for long periods of time in various conditions very pleasant. The grivory handle is very tactile and grippy and you can choose your color so that is great! The blade and how everything is put together is why I buy American higher quality and cost knifes. Yes it is over $100 and has a plastic handle but it is perfectly assembled and build quality is excellent for this price. If you want a more serious configuration and don't mind spending more then I would highly recommend getting a custom built model from Benchmade. They have full metal tang models with grivory handle and you can choose accessories and colors. If you want to save money then Amazon is going to be your best deal. All I can say is give it a try if you are doubtful. This is a great knife!! ... show more

  • The One I Carry Every Day - Lightening Fast!
First let me say, I’m a Spyderco guy. I used to watch the reviews & hope the reviewer concluded that the Spyderco was the best head to head. I still think that Spyderco is the best value for the money, for knives for harder uses; and I own over a hundred knives from various manufacturers. However... With that out of the way, the Benchmade Bugout 535 is excellent, and is the knife I now carry every day! I know that the rub on this knife is the grivory scales & lack of a full internal steel liner. That said, most people will appreciate the tradeoff of strength vs weight. I own several businesses which are warehouse based. I wear casual clothes to work. This knife is lightweight, the clip is perfect and not too big, and I can deploy it in a flash. With one hand, I can quickly pull it from my back pocket, deploy it, cut some banding, close it, and have it back in pocket, before most people even see it! The ergos are perfect. You barely have to move your fingers to close it. It is faster than a full auto (with the exception of an OTF), because it can be closed as fast as it can be deployed. It is perfectly balanced, flips out so quick and closes without “bouncing” off the lock pin! No other manually deployed knife in the market, deploys AND closes as fast as this one, and is as light, including the Benchmade Griptillian & the 940 series. No one should use a $100.00 plus knife as a prybar! Very few would function if misused anyway. This is not a hard use knife. Yes, a stronger knife might be more appropriate for hunting, camping & hard use; but for everyday carry and office warehouse usage, this knife cannot be beat. It is wicked sharp, stays sharp, and can easily be retouched with a chefs sharpening steel. I highly recommend it for medium duty tasks such as cutting boxes, food prep, opening packages, opening letters, cutting banding, cutting medium rope, cutting leather, and digging out splinters! I would not be without it! ... show more

  • 535 a great quality American made folding knife
Very smooth folding action. Perfectly centered. Fantastic lockup. Rock solid. Absolutely zero up/down or side to side blade play. Great details with the blue anodized thumb studs, barrel spacers and black coated titanium axis lock bar. A minimalist steel liner design frame the axis lock mechanism. Phosphor bronze washers. Clever and small deep carry pocket clip with a wear resistant parkerized (vs painted) finish. Extremely slicey s30v premium blade steel grind. A beautiful swedge at the top of the blade aids is its piercing capabilities. Of course the hole vs the sum of its parts – a very well-engineered light weight carry. Regardless of weight, the knife still feels quite solid in the hand. Blue injection molded glass-filled nylon-based plastic polymer (Benchmade read: “Grivory”) handle scales offer a satisfying grip texture. Easily light and compact enough to serve as a backup blade option inside any bugout bag. However, still very well suited in most any EDC environment. The terms “high-speed and low-drag” come to mind. But in a good way… vs the mall ninja, car door batoning, z-hunter kind of way (node to The Shabazz). A high performance folding knife very much akin to a light weight high performance sports car. Ultimately a very highly recommended purchase. Probably the only knife that most will truly ever need on a day to day basis. If you’re considering the basic configuration Benchmade mini grip(s) or Spyderco Delica 4. Then you own it to yourself to at least strongly consider the Benchmade 535 Bugout. One of the very best in the entire Benchmade line up. ... show more
