  • Decent, but a bit rough
For general purpose use and, considering the cost, this is a functional light vise. It is not the most well-finished vice I've seen. The surface quality of the casting seems to vary. For instance the movable jaw is considerably rougher in finish compared to the fixed jaw. This only applies to the non-working surfaces with one exception: the anvil surface is not machined which limits its usefulness. The mechanisms work pretty well, the jaws can be tightened to a relatively high degree. But the screw feels "lumpy". Again, it functions well enough, but this is not a precision-made device. One point that I noticed that might be an issue for some. The mounting flange extends about 2mm past the plane of the fixed jaw. What means is that if you hold something vertically that extends below the surface of the bench on which the vice is mounted, you won't be able to fully close the jaws on the work piece without applying bending force to the work piece. Buying any vice from a relatively unknown manufacturer can be a risk. As such, I would not use this vice in such a way that would apply a lot of impact to it, there is no way to determine the strength of the casting without testing it to destruction, something best left to professional testers. In short, for a cheap vice for light to medium duty, it's decent and should give good service. ... show more

  • Fine for what it is.
This seems like a reasonably good vise for its price. I have another bench vise of the same size, and comparing the two was interesting. This Goehner's vise has less play in the movable jaw, so that's nice. But the mini-anvil plate on my other vise is machined flat, whereas on the Goehner's it's left with the cast finish and is painted over that, so that's a bit cheap. Otherwise the two vises seem to be of equal quality and sturdiness. The "Goehner's" brand name is only on the tool in the form of a little stick-on label that's barely attached at all. So presumably Goehner's isn't the manufacturer's name; they're probably just a reseller that buys no-name vises wholesale and (loosely) sticks their name onto them. But I don't suppose that really matters. This is just an inexpensive general-purpose bench vise that's fine for what it is. ... show more

  • Very well built, works well
(Full disclosure: this product was provided via the Amazon Vine program for evaluation and subsequent review.) The vise came very well packaged. Fit and finish are extremely nice, especially given the reasonable price point. It came with four mounting bolts, washers, and nuts. I did use one bolt through the bench top, and used three lag screws to mount the other feet to the bench frame. (first photo) The vise can rotate the advertised 270 degrees. So check the rotation before you mount it, to be sure you can use it in the directions that work for your layout. The first couple of turns of the jackscrew were a little balky. The screw seemed to be machined fine, so I hit it with a little spray lubricant I had on the bench. Problem instantly solved. Vise moves with ease... I clamped in some bar stock, and tested the clamp force by cutting the stock with a hacksaw followed by filing of the new edges. Then I did the same thing using the pipe clamp on a piece of 2" steel pipe. In both cases the clamp force was sufficient to hold the material yet not cut it. Good all around light to medium duty bench vise... ... show more

  • Not bad
Installed this on my drill press stand which is upstairs in my shop as a secondary workstation. I have a much beefier vice downstairs. This feels fairly lite duty. It’s simple to install, comes with some mounting bolts which won’t work if your bench is more than 1” or so. I had some spare lags that I used for the area I’d my bench that are 2 1/2”thick. I think this would be fine for homeowner/hobbiest. Box had good padding. ... show more

  • Bolt it on, grease it up, and clamp things in it.
Pretty straight forward vice, the 4 bolts came with washers and lock nuts, a simple greasing and it spun smoothly. Has the ability to unlock and rotate if needed.
