  • The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly......
Style: Volta w/ Battery Backup
I've had my Beam Up Volta garage door opener installed for a few weeks now and here are my experiences both installing and using the product: ****Installation: The installation manual provided is poorly written and jumps all over the place between several different models which makes it harder to follow in sequence steps of installation. You're better off following the PDF installation manual on the BeamUp website which pertains only to your specific model and has better highlighted details. The BeamUP online installation videos only play music and don't say or explain anything which is useless. The video also contradicts the written installation manual, for instance the video shows the stop bolt facing down, but the installation manual shows the stop bolt facing up...that is only one example of many contradictions. If you have an existing garage door opener installed, you are now basically starting over from scratch because BeamUp wants you to use their supplied wiring and not pre-existing wiring, so you have to run all new wires. I have a single car garage and the wire lengths they provided were barely just long enough to reach on both ends, so if you have a two car or large size garage then the wire lengths may be too short for your application. The wires on the photo eye sensors are permanently attached to the sensor so you are forced to run the wires starting from the garage door and go up, in other words you can't drop the wires down through the ceiling from the attic and then connect the photo eye sensors. The mounting brackets for the photo eye sensors are very long as shown in the photo. Yes, you can cut them shorter but there are no score lines provided. I just modified and used the existing brackets as shown in the photo which was quicker and works fine. ****Smart Garage Door Controller: Setting up the smart garage door controller with the Beam APP requires using a cell phone that supports 60Hz refresh rate. If your cell phone does not support 60Hz refresh rate (like mine doesn't) then you will not be able to setup the controller for Wi-Fi access and will need to find or borrow a cell phone that does support 60Hz refresh rate. Once the controller setup is completed then the Beam APP works fine when installed on cell phones that don't support 60Hz refresh rate which is only required for the initial controller setup. The controller box uses double sided tape for mounting, but the rear surface of the controller box is curved and not flat so the controller box keeps falling off, especially when mounted in a horizontal position like mine. I added some wide Velcro on the back which is holding so far. Because I had to pull AC power from the attic for the controller, I mounted a double gang blank face plate to the ceiling (with no electrical box) and Velcro mounted the controller box to it and then drilled a hole to drop down the controller power and garage door opener wiring from the attic which came out looking really nice. ****Beam APP The Beam APP works okay but I found myself at a dead end several times during controller setup because there is no backup function to return to the previous setup page. The only solution is to uninstall the APP, reinstall it again and start over, which I had to do three times before setup was completed successfully. The APP does send me notification alerts whenever the garage door goes up/down, but it doesn't show the time or keep a log file. You can set the garage door to autoclose after a specific amount of time, but that quickly becomes annoying if you're working outside and want the door to stay open so you have to disable the autoclose feature and even then it still does it one more time after being disabled in the APP. It would be nice to select the days of the week when you want autoclose feature enabled. I found it so annoying that I just keep autoclose disabled. It also doesn't indicate to correct battery charge level that matches the garage door battery charge indicator lights. The APP says 70% charge which isn't right. ****HomeLink - In car garage door control function: I can confirm that BeamUp is backwards compatible with older version (2008) HomeLink mirrors, but the programming instructions in the video link they provide on the BeamUp website didn't work for either of my cars. I went online and found a different process for Gentex mirrors that worked fine and was the same on all of my cars. ****LED Lighting: The LED lights are okay, but not as bright as I had hoped and they do not project light into the garage area as well as my old Craftsman garage door opener did. I have no additional supplemental lighting in my garage other than the garage door opener. I have a love/hate relationship with the motion sensor function. It's nice to have when you walk into the garage to get something, but if I'm working out there and the sensor doesn't detect my presence then the lights keep shutting off which quickly becomes annoying. I wish the sensor function could be bypassed when I want the lights to stay on regardless if motion is detected or not. ****Build Quality: The BeamUP garage door opener is mostly made of plastic materials unlike the Craftsman (Chamberlain) opener that it replaced which lasted over 22 years with only minor repairs. Yes, the BeamUp is very quiet and has nice features but I doubt it will enjoy the same longevity as my old Craftsman, however that applies to most things today that aren't built to last like in the old days. Only time will tell. ****Final Thoughts: BeamUP was quick to respond to my support questions, but it's best to contact them via email. The BeamUp Volta is a new breed of garage door opener compared to my old Craftsman model, but even with a pain in the neck install and a few hiccups with the Beam APP along the way I would still recommend it. ... show more

  • FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!
Style: Centurion
I am a very handy guy and have worked on cars and houses most of my adolescent and adult life so I was not afraid to tackle putting up a new garage door opener when my old one finally died. I did my research, looked for one that work work in a modern, automated home, and settled on the Beam BU800 Centurion. I picked the model because of its features, motor sized, linkage type, price, and customer reviews. This one checked all the boxes. I ordered it and promptly let it sit in the box in my garage for the next six months! LOL! When I finally got around to putting it up, it was easy to put together and the instructions were pretty easy to follow. I was able to use my old garage door openers ceiling bracket, garage door bracket, and track bracket over the garage door. I had the new Beam BU800 up in less than an hour. I followed the programming guide and set both my upper and lower limits and the automatic force programming worked just fine. I then did a test run and the garage door opened smoothly and with out issue. However, when I went to close the garage door, it would only move it about three inches and then stop and sound a series of warning beeps (20 to be exact). I tried it again with the same results. I reprogrammed it and tried again, same results. At this point, I decided to contact Beam Support. I quickly video the opening and attempted closing of the garage door, attached it to an e-mail and set it Beam support on a Sunday night around 8:30 PM. The next morning I had a phone call from Beam support and I walked the engineer through the issue. They had me check the beams, then they had me over ride the automatically learned force setting to apply more downward force. This did not fix the issue. They asked that I make sure that there was no binding with the rollers, they were properly oiled, and that the tension on the torsion spring was set right. Instead of me messing with the torsion spring (for those who don't know, they are very dangers and can severely hurt you if you are not careful) I called my local garage door company (who installed the garage door when we build the house) and they came out made some adjustments (because it was a little stiff) and even helped me "troubleshoot" the opener. They agreed that it had to be something with the garage door opener itself. I contact Beam Support again and this time they said they were shipping me out a new logic board to replace the one in the BU800. It got here yesterday and before it had even been delivered, Beam support reached out and asked if I had received the part and if I needed their help to install it. I did not have the part yet and did not know it would be delivered later in the day. When it did come, I e-mail Beam Support to let them know it was here and asked them how they wanted me to replace it. They sent detailed instruction on what to do. It took me about 15 minutes to remove the old logic board and replace it with the new logic board. After it was replaced, and before I put the engine housing back together, I programmed the up and down limits and the force and ran a test cycle. VIOLA! It worked just like I expected it to!!! I ran probably close to 10 additional cycles just to make sure it did not have any issues. It worked every time just like it should. I know may of you will read this and say "it should have work out of the box" and while that may be true, you never know how something was handled at the warehouse or in shipping so I cannot fault them for it not working. What I can do is praise them for having fantastic customer service and never ignoring my requests for help. They were Johnny-On-The-Spot and helped me get it working as advertised! The product is much quieter than my old chain driven open, works with my home automation system and has all the features I am looking for. I would highly recommend this product and this company to anyone who is looking for a good, powerful, quiet, product that comes from a company that will stand behind its product! And no, I was not paid to write this nor did I get a "sample" product to review. I purchased this with my own hard earned money and I am will say it was worth every penny! ... show more

  • Easy Assembly!
Style: Sentry
Excellent garage door opener!! Super quiet operation and the LED’s light up my garage adequately. I had it paired with Alexa in no time and the learn button on the unit is the easiest set up than any other unit I have ever installed. Read the directions, follow the steps and take your time. Love it!
