  • Not as good as I expected
Fisher Price continues to produce durable, colorful toys. This item is not the old beige and brown recorder, a real recorder, of the 1980’s. My toddlers loved the old style. We still have a recording of our son repeating the included book when he was three. I guess the tape caused a potential danger and the new version is more of a baby toy. The music is clear and on pitch, but could be used for bedtime, music box, type music. Using the microphone was quite a bit more difficult than I expected. Overall, I’m disappointed. It will probably be in the donation box before the year is over. With lawsuits so universal with toys, I can’t blame Fisher Price. I would suggest that they use colors that are less childish and more like non-toys. Some improvement needs to be made in the recording mechanism. ... show more

  • Sound quality is bad
We have one from years ago. I bought two for the grandkids. The sound is awful and it will not play other cassettes. The two year old loved his. The three year old got the old one. The second new one went to Toys for tots with batteries

  • Worth the purchase!!
I read a lot of complaints in the previous reviews, however purchased anyway. I found the play radio/tape recorder awesome. Recording is simple, you press the record button and talk into the Mic like usual. It's the perfect size for my 2.5yr old, thin enough so he can get his hand around the handle but very solid. The music gets a little loud for me, but he loves it. Also, he gets a kick hearing himself before the music starts. Personally I'm glad you can't play tapes. He would unwind them and string the tape material everywhere. We purchased this to help encourage my 2yr olds talking and vocabulary, so far it's really helping. Great toy! ... show more

  • It Works
I know there are a lot of people upset that it's not exactly like the old school tape recorder, but tbh it's not horrible. I will admit to being disappointed as well (at first) even after I had read the reviews and still bought it lol But really I think my own nostalgia was holding me back from realizing that my 3yo couldnt care less and she loves it. She does not care AT ALL that the sound quality kinda sucks. All she knows is that she can hear herself singing and is delighted. I DO wish it was more like the original, but with today's technology, it would be more expensive, and I wasnt interested in paying more than what I paid. It does work. And she loves it. I just had to get over my own disappointment. ... show more

  • REDUCED SIZE CASSETTE
I should have read the detail more carefully - my mistake...So here is the warning... THE CASSETTE THAT COMES WITH THE RECORDER IS A REDUCED SIZE so you canNOT play any old Fisher Price cassettes that you might still have. Also, you can't save any of the recorded singing or talking a child does. The "tape recorder" only records 32 seconds of a child's singing or talking (32 SECONDS!!) and you can't transfer that to any other system so that you can save their little voices. Our whole family remembers the fun we had with the old Fisher Price recorder. Grandparents could read a story to the children on a blank cassette and the kids could listen to it over and over. Also, the little cassette that comes with the unit only plays fragments of nursery rhyme songs...weird! We are so disappointed - and I bought TWO of them to give as gifts. I can't take them back and return them or I would do exactly that. ... show more

  • Wish it played cassettes.
I wish it would play real cassettes. My grandson has some kid song cassettes that He was wanting to listen to. It only has the one that came with it that it plays. The microphone only held his interest for so long. I had to buy a regular cassette player so he could listen to his songs.

  • It will make you crazy.
Super cute but it’s so loud and the music is so annoying. I bought it knowing I was giving my child a microphone, so I didn’t expect it to be quiet by any means but the music is like a super loud music box on repeat. My son loves it though, he would surely rate it a 5/5. It’ll drive you insane, but maybe a great gift idea for your friends toddler..? ... show more

  • One of His Favorite Toys
We bought this toy for our 15 month old. Our little guy has been playing with it for a little over 2 months now. I was looking for something lightweight that he’d be able to carry around easily and this definitely fits the bill. The buttons are super easy to push, so dude doesn’t need any help. He can easily “speak” right into it. What really helps is the button on the microphone is long, so it pushes down just by being in his grasp. The fake little cassette is cute. He loves messing with it and is actually able to put it back in himself now. Overall, he is very happy with his toy. ... show more
