  • It really works.
I have an ongoing code that pops up in my truck. I purchased this tool with the intent of leaving it in the truck so I could clear the code whenever it presented. Well, this thing works great. It’s very intuitive, and for the price I don’t feel bad at all that it lives in my truck. This little code reader is a great deal. ... show more

  • Pleased with Autel AL319 so far
Although I have only used this device for a short time, I find it to be relatively easy to use and effective in meeting my DIY vehicle repair needs (for a 2003 VW Passat 2.8L V6 4-Motion wagon). It provided all of the codes that I expected (compared with a previous dealer OBD test) and was clear in describing them. I am expecting that this will save me over $180 in parts costs alone. I was able to easily clear the DTCs and MIL on the dashboard. It does not however read or display my VIN for some reason. I really like the Live Data and I/M Readiness features (particularly relevant to my O2 sensor failure in preparing for an upcoming state inspection). I did run into some difficulty with the Autel Web site, from a reference for downloading updated data, firmware, and software found in the manual. Upon navigating there I found that I had to register myself and the device. However when I attempted to register the AL319 it was not found in the device list and I could not complete the process. I called Autel technical support. The engineer was quite helpful and after asking someone else he learned that this device does not have to be registered (this should be explained somewhere). I also learned that there are other URLs available to access Autel on-line functionality that are not published (I now have them for future interactions). It turns out that my device was configured in the factory just a couple of months ago, and thus it came with all of the latest data, firmware, and software. So I did not need to try the download and device update procedures. But they look pretty straightforward (requires the installation of MaxiLink2 software on your PC). The simple user interface does not get in the way of its usefulness, and the display is bright and readable. (The device is powered from either the vehicle OBD connection or the computer USB connection.) The manual is pretty good and the included CD contains the appropriate software. The included USB cable is a nice convenience - I connected the AL319 to my Windows 7 computer with no problem (after appropriate drivers were download and installed). I think that the cable could be longer, particular when using the device for testing while driving. I was originally going to purchase the low-end, low-priced MS300 or MS309, but decided to spend the extra money on the more powerful AL319. I do not regret this decision (although it is curious that the AL319 now appears to be listed for about ten dollars more than what I paid for it in September.) I hope that I do not experience any of the early failures that other Amazon reviewers have reported, but at this point I would recommend the AL319 to both inexperienced and experienced vehicle repair people. It seems to provide a reasonable and useful return on investment, at least for my car. ... show more

  • Simple to use ODB; No instructions for software/database update
While engine is running the ODB can be plugged in to show the current engine check code a brief description. The inspection system check works well prior to bring your car in for inspection. ONE MAJOR Problem. The firmware and ODB code database can be updated. Only problem is the package only comes with the USB cable and no CD or instructions. These can be downloaded from the website but it took me about 30 minutes talking by phone with a tech assistant to locate the update software and the latest firmware and database. Briefly, the windows update software can be found on the web site at Autel.com -> click support -> downloads. Look for Name "MaxiLinkII and Model names: AL319, AL419, and AL 519 etc. Click download to get a zip file with Windows software to install. For latest firmware from Homepage select Products->Diagnostic Tools. Click TAB for "DIY Tool" Find Autolink AL319. Click on view more. Click on download tab. See list of firmware in various languages and versions. At the bottom is the PDF User Manual Guide AutoLink AL319 User Manual From firmware page unpack the two files in the WINRAR file. one is ".aut" and one ".bin". While pressing the "Enter/Exit" Button Plug USB cable to unit and computer. Should see "Program Mode" Start MaxilinkII update software. File in BOTH select file boxes. Each box only shows either the .aut or .bin file it needs. There are TWO update buttons. BOTH must be updated - click one then the other. Unit should leave program mode. ... show more

  • [6 Year Update ] Great Scanner, worth the $30!
2023 Update: Review still stands! I now have a 2023 BMW M340xi and is able to read that as well! Original Review (2017): Hello all, I was getting annoyed by the fact that I had to constantly go to AutoZone or PepBoys in order to find out why the Check Engine Light (CEL) was on. Sometimes they would even charge me to do so So I went ahead and did my research on which one I should buy. I was looking for a scanner that would be able to read ALL vehicles that has OBD II, ability to tell me that code and what the code means, and the ability to clear it. This scanner did all of that and I'm very happy with my purchase. Here are some things that I did soon as I got the device in the mail. I downloaded the program form their website (Maxi-Link v1.04) in order to update it to it's latest firmware, plugged it in with the provided USB cable, followed the steps and it was up to date! And to my surprise they even had a DTC Lookup manual in their program in case you forgot what the code description was or if someone knew the code but didn't know what it means, this was extremely handy to have. It had P0, P2, P3, U0 and U3 within the DTC lookup, codes with P1, P3, and U1 you would have to do research as they are manufacturer specific. Another neat feature is that this scanner allows you to view freeze frame data and the I/M Monitor is very useful also. The LED screen is very nice to have as some scanner don't even have a lit screen, even more expensive ones doesn't sometime. But I only wish the buttons like ENTER/Exit and Scroll were lit also but it's not something that I would knock off a star for. As I said before, I did a lot of research so here are some reasons why I chose this product over the others. BAFX Products 34t5 Bluetooth OBDII Scan Tool for Android Devices - I had friends and family that had bluetooth scanners and they all had some type of bad experience with them. This didn't make me not want to buy one however, I didn't buy it because of the fact that I had to use an app off the phone or tablet and I personally hate scanners like that. Oxgord CAN OBD II Scanner Tool for Check Engine Light & Diagnostics, Direct Scan and Read Out - It was very small and compact, but it only told you the code with no description, you would have to remeber the code or write it down and do your own research. Also, it only has a small screen and I felt as if that it would be hard to navigate through the screen if I need to. Lastly, PepBoys in my neighborhood, used this in order to tell you what code pops up, and it was unable to read both my Audi and BMW. I read others say it was working on theirs but I saw it with my own eyes that it wasn't working and I knew I didn't want this product. BlueDriver Bluetooth Professional OBDII Scan Tool for iPhone, iPad & Android - Same reason as the first product above (BAFX Products 34t5 Bluetooth OBDII Scan Tool for Android Devices) Car WIFI OBD 2 OBD2 OBDII Scan Tool Foseal Scanner Adapter Check Engine Diagnostic Tool for iOS & Android - Same reason as above. Autel MaxiScan MS300 CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool for OBDII Vehicles - Same company as the product I'm reviewing but the fact that the screen was small, I was willing to pay the extra $15 to have a nice lit bigger screen with more features as well. Cars tested with: 2011 Audi A4 2,0T - working 2011 BMW 328xi - working 1999 Toyota 4 Runner Limited - working 2006 Nissan Altima - working 1997 Mitsubishi Outlander - working ... show more
