  • Purchase from Amazon Warehouse Deals; No regrets so far!
Style: Headphone
My pair came from Amazon's Warehouse Deals, and the condition note said "minor aesthetic damage" to packaging. My purchase price was something like $46 (shipped!), which I thought was too low to resist. I took the gamble. Upon receipt I scoured the well-packaged (unopened) original box, but I couldn't find the alleged damage; meanwhile the product inside appears brand new and has met my high expectations, living up to the excellent reputation of the ATH-M series. I bought these after 5+ years of using a beat-up pair of M35's in my volunteer role as FOH Engineer at my church. That pair of M35's was the first pair of professional-caliber headphones I ever put on, and that was a game-changer for me. I read reviews and considered Sony's MDR7506 and Superlux's 668 but settled back on what i have hands-on experience with. So far, I find that the sound of my M30Xs is a joyous thing to experience, rivaling or perhaps surpassing the old M35's. I am no headphone-phile, but I can tell that a similar contour/EQ philosophy is employed in both sets; dead-flat tone with emphasis in the mids to draw out minute detail in voices and, I find, acoustic instrument character and voicing. In particular, I have been loving these cans for electronica due to the fantastic middle details. Bass tones are extremely clean and legible; but in contrast to pairs of bass-boosted buds and cans will seem quite subdued. These will certainly and effortlessly expose poor bitrates and/or bad source material. Things I love: - Build Quality; in a word, 'Solid'. - Sound Quality; to my ears, perfection. - Design Aesthetic; functional, no-nonsense matte black. Things I do not love (but knew going in): - Cord is long (yay!) but hard-wired (boo!); non-interchangeable. Surprises: - I have huge ears, and the stock pads are too small for me. The cans actually sit on top of the tips of my ears, and after an hour can cause some pretty significant discomfort. The sound is so great that I didn't care, for years- see the update below. Overall: Two thumbs way up (especially for $46!), and a positive experience with Amazon's Warehouse Deals to boot. UDPATE after four years: Wow, these just keep rocking. The sound is just incredible, and the build is holding up great. The pads started to crack last year (so that's three years of normal use) and they were always too small for my ears, so I replaced them with these: Brainwavz Replacement Memory Foam Earpads - Suitable For Many Other Large Over The Ear Headphones - AKG, HifiMan, ATH, Philips, Fostex (Black). Beautiful, comfortable, and no noticable depreciation to the majestic sound of these headphones. After four years and trying many rivals, I now believe that these are simply the greatest headphones in the world at their price point, Thanks for reading! ... show more

  • Work great for silent electric guitar practice.
Style: Headphone
Did a lot of research and headphones in this category have some pretty marginal reviews. These have worked fine for me, they're lightweight, comfortable, don't squeeze too tight (I wear a large size hat), seal outside sounds well and so far the ear muffs seem to be holding up well. The height adjustment seems to be sufficiently stiff to stay in place, but not too stiff to easily adjust. I use mine with a headphone amp so I can practice electric guitar without bothering anyone. But I've also plugged them into my stereo for general music listening, and they sound much better than the cheapy speakers my wife uses for background music. Deteriorating muffs seem to be a big failure point for most headphones, but these seem to be easily removable so should be easy to replace. And replacements are available. Also the wires from the headband to the phones are exposed. This might expose them to being snagged and broken, but I prefer them because they aren't big loops - just enough to allow flexibility, without hiding them to snake around some internal joint where they're likely to get flexed so much they eventually break - which renders the headphones useless. In fact the wire routing seems specifically designed to avoid kinking or over-flexing no matter how the headphones are articulated or folded. I expect to have these a long time. ... show more

  • These AT's are music to my ears
Style: Headphone
I can't justify spending triple digits on headphones. I work in the audio field, live prod. mainly, AT is always my first choice next to Shure (mics). AT has never let me down, not once. They're the only company (I've ever used) that delivers increasingly good products while keeping prices realistic in times where everyone else charges a liver to sell a brand. Yea JBL I'm lookin at you. You too Fender. PRS, can't even look at you, sad. I know I'm bouncing from mics-guitars-headphones, the point's still valid. The other big dogs are the YETI's of the audio world, you pay for a logo. Just slap a decal on your car and call it a day, then go buy some AT's. They KNOW the human ear, they respect the frequency spectrum and don't hard knee an HPF/LPF, their low end kicks like a buck shot, unlike the other whale emulators out there. I've been having eargasms ever since I plugged em in. Great for recording, essential really. If you want your recordings to sound good in your car, you need these so you're not playing the EQ more than the guitar itself. Lightweight, comfortable, amazing quality in material, design and sound. ... show more

  • They are great, but then again......
Style: Headphone
They sound great, but I have a major complaint. They fit way too tight. And I can only wear them for a few minutes and then they make my ears hurt. I loved how they sound, clear top end and good base. Really nice build quality and a nice long cord. Had to pass them off to the wife and she loves them. I guess I have a big head. I wish you could adjust the distance between the ear pieces. ... show more
