I was installing a bunch of 3/16 x 5/8 rivets and Initially I was having trouble getting it to grip. I counted over 100 actions on one rivet to get it tight, each pull was only doing a tiny amount at the end of the travel. Wow, I was in a jam, but this Astro 1/4" heavy duty riveting tool fortunately got me out of it. I mean, I was trying to find some way of securing the three mounting legs of this attic vent fan onto the thin aluminum housing. Well, sheet metal screws were certainly not the answer as they would typically strip out due to the thin aluminum housing. In addition, there was no option of using bolts, lock washers and nuts either as there was no quick and easy way of gaining access from behind the housing. This was where the Astro 1/4" heavy duty riveting tool came into play as the three holes in the housing were slightly larger than 1/4" in diameter. Well, because I was dealing with an obviously confined space, the relatively short handles of the Astro 1/4" heavy duty riveting tool made this job workable. Yes, I was able to securely fasten each of the three legs of the attic vent fan onto the thin aluminum housing using nothing but 1/4" X 3/8" steel rivets (which I also purchased from Amazon). You know, that Astro 1/4" heavy duty riveting tool had surely paid for itself that day! Oh yes, that is undoubtedly a well constructed and quality 1/4" riveter by the way, and something that I will cherish for years to come. If you're looking for an exceptionally good 1/4" riveting tool at a very affordable price, I would highly recommend this one! ... show more

I have used several of the one hand style riveters for some larger rivets we use at work, and had endless problems with them breaking off early or not fitting well due to the way it grabbed the post. On one machine I had almost a 50% fail rate. After buying this, my fail rate dropped to 0%, installation took much less time and had much better results. I plan on buying another one for use at home and throwing my old Stanley in a garage sale. ... show more

I went with this hand riveter cause I needed something that could do bigger rivets than some of the smaller handheld trigger grip styles, but wanted something more compact than most larger 2 hand scissor like riveters. This one is 4 inches shorter than the typical riveter of this type. I had some fairly big rivets to reconnect the window regulalor to my door carrier in my Porsche Cayenne, and this took care of them no sweat. 3 squeezes each and they were done. Rivet ends can be tipped back into the bottle, or simply use the bottle to store rivets and the included wrench to switch out the tips. The tips are stored on the sides of the riveter. This is the one you need for larger rivets that require more force, but you want the most compact version! ... show more

This riveter works better than the cheap riveters. It will work with stainless steel rivets, as well as aluminum. The cheap ones will not work with steel rivets.

so i bought this "nice" rivet gun to replace an old crappy broken regular one. i finally get all of my internal door parts in for my restoration project and i am super excited to get this finished so i can go for a drive. all of the parts go in super easy which never happens and i'm finally ready to rivet on my new freshly powder coated door panels. I clamp the panels in place drill two dozen 1/8" holes and get out my shiney new Astro 1423! i open the jaws, put the stainless rivet into the jaw and pull the handles about half way down until i feel it grab the rivet. I stick the rivet firmly in the hole and press the handles together, again and again and again. It takes about ten pulls to get one 1/8" diameter 1/2" long stainless rivet to set. i point the rivet gun up to the sky and open the jaw and clink the post goes into the container. 3 hours later i have 16 rivets done; some taking over 100 pumps to set. Keep in mind that the heat index is 116. At this point i am looking at the neighbors goat wondering if a blood sacrifice will help. I'm sweating, tired and getting sore from pumping these damn handles. I give up and go inside to soak up some AC, I decide that the tool is a lost cause so i might as well take it apart and see what is going on. I quickly figure out that the tips are all different lengths and this sets how wide the jaw opens. So i grab a few washers and put them in between the tip and the giant nut it threads into which should keep the jaws from opening as wide. Not only does it grip the 1/8" shank it grabs immediately instead of half way through the pump. No more pointing it at the sky and closing the handles to "set" the jaws. they set immediately like every other rivet gun i have ever used. I go outside and finish the last 6 rivets in a matter of minutes with each rivet setting in 3 full even pulls. Word to the wise if you buy this expect to have to tinker with the tip spacing to get it to work properly.
