  • No Instructions, But Violin, Rosin, Bow and Case Good For Us Beginners
Size: 4/4-size
I was surprised that there were no basic instructions included for anything, not even the rosin, included in this set, but I found what I needed by watching several videos online. The case is very sturdy and keeps the violin well-protected, with a small storage box inside and a velcro pocket on the outside. The zipper is smooth that secures the case closed, so the case is nicer is better than I'd hoped. This full-sized violin is beautiful as well as functional. The bow is very nice and as far as my beginner's knowledge, and accepts rosin well. It's tedious the first time to rosin the entire bow, but worth it. The rosin was so tight and smooth that I scratched it up a bit with an old nail file to get it going well. The violin does seem to hold its tune well after a few initial tunings, (the strings getting broken in). I tuned the top pegs first to the general tuning, then went to the smaller pegs at the bottom of the strings to fine tune. I had to watch a lot of videos and use the included tuner to get it close, then my daughter finished tuning it accurately. It's a bit time-consuming if one is a newbie like me, but my daughter and I have been able to get some nice sounds out of it once properly tuned and the bow tightened and rosined. Because it keeps tune well thus far, and because the bow (which will need to be tightened) is good as well as the case, I'm pleased with this set overall, but was disappointed in the lack of any instructions. Thanks for reading. ... show more

  • Adequate for beginners or practice
Size: 4/4-size
I got the 4/4 (full size), which is for a larger child or adult. Overall I'm pretty impressed with the Apollo brand. I've tested several of their instruments so far, and they're able to make fairly decent beginners instruments at quite amazing prices. In some cases, like their tuba and trumpet, the quality is better than adequate. But these low end instruments are for: Beginners (if they decide they don't like it, it's not a lot of money invested), for practice (doesn't matter if they get scratched up), to be left at the school locker (if they get stolen it's not that big of a deal), etc. Don't expect a lot. String instruments are a bit more complicated, and you can clearly see where they cut some corners on this. That's not an insult - if you don't want cut corners, you should spend $500 on a beginner's Yamaha. The question is whether you can live with the cut corners, and for most beginners I would say yes, this is adequate. This has a cheap bow (loose hairs right off the bat), the resin is cheap, the finish isn't even, the tailpiece is cheaply made, the fine tuners are difficult to turn, and a few other issues. All of these are fairly minor issues, though you may want to replace the bow immediately. This doesn't come ready to go out of the box, you'll need to tune it, maybe reinstall the strings. There are no instructions. Hopefully your music teacher can help you with this. You may be able to find an online video for help. One final note - there are alternatives to buying new. I frequently see name brand instruments on the marketplace sites. And if you're lucky enough to have a music store in your area, they often rent or sell used/refurbished instruments. There are obvious advantages to going to a local music shop, where they offer warranties, can provide advice, tune up your instrument for you (often at no charge). So keep that in mind before making a decision. ... show more

  • Excellent Violin
Size: 4/4-size
This violin looks so nice. The wood is gorgeous, and it sounds so good. It is also light enough to feel good in your hands, but not to feel cheap. I'm quite happy with it.

  • A nice violin for students
Size: 4/4-size
Apollo has recently come out with several musical instruments designed for music students or others who are learning how to use these instruments for the first time. I ordered this violin for my daughter, since she will be taking private lessons. This way she won't have to rent an instrument and can keep it forever. I am not an expert in violins, but this instrument seems to be well made. Her teacher said it is nicer than the models that most beginning students use, and it is easy to tune. It also comes with a nice carrying case, rosin, and a digital tuner. If you have children who want to take music lessons, I can highly recommend this new line of instruments from Apollo. ... show more

  • Decent beginner instrument, requires guidance to set up
Size: 4/4-size
I appreciate the growing trend towards producing better quality affordable musical instruments for beginners. As an instructor in various instruments over the years, it's clear to me that poor quality beginner instruments is sometimes a key reason why a beginning student gives up in frustration. When it comes to instruments for kids, you don't want to spend a ton of money on something that they don't take to and you're now stuck with the prospect of reselling for probably much less than you bought it for. At the same time you don't want to buy a piece of junk that will kill any possible spark of interest in learning an instrument. So, with the high grain spruce top, maple back/sides, ebony fingerboard/pegs, solid maple bridge, brazilwood bow w/ genuine horsehair, decent quality d'Adderio strings, a tuner and a decent case, this is a great package. Tone is perhaps another story, but a beginner could have a Stradivarius and sound like fingernails on a chalkboard! A great entry-level violin. ... show more
