The media could not be loaded. This is my first CNC machine, I've had it a month, and I can say - this is a fantastic machine for a beginner! Actually, I'm a little worried that I'm going to be spoiled by the premium features of this machine (linear rails + lead screws) when I decide to get my next machine! First, why did I choose the Anolex? Most of the cheap 3018 machines have lower power spindles, lower quality rails, and lack rigidity, precision, and power. The build quality is excellent, and the instructions made assembly a breeze. Support was excellent when I ran into an issue after assembling it. I'd recommend you buy the biggest one your budge can afford. Second, for beginners, what do I need to get into CNC? This was my first CNC machine (I had used 3D printers before, but these are a step up in complexity!) Here's some basic info to help you get started: Software: While this machine comes with basic software (candle) to drive the machine, to make your own designs, you'll need some 3rd party tools. CAD software helps you design, CAM software helps you turn those designs into toolpaths (gcode), and controllers send that to the machine. Various software encompasses different parts of the workflow. Look into Easel, Fusion 360, FreeCAD, and Estlcam, just to name a few. Bits: This machine comes with an ER11 collet sized for 1/8" bits, as well as a few 30 degree V bits to get you started. They're great for engraving, PCB work, and small details. You'll probably soon want an ER11 collet for 1/4" bits to start making larger cuts. Feeds & speeds: how quickly to run your bits through various materials. Good luck, there's infinite info and complexity on this one. I use the included 1/8" V-bits with ~0.8mm of plunge depth at around 600-800 mm/min in soft woods, no problem. Might be able to go faster, but I don't want to break bits. Your mileage may vary. Noise: The included spindle is quite quiet, as opposed to hand-held routers. However, that's largely moot due to the noise generated by dust collection. Speaking of... Dust: You'll probably want some way of controlling the dust generated by cutting. A shopvac will get you by, but some way of mounting the vacuum hose, a dust shoe, and ideally a dust cyclone will likely be in your future. Size: if you're just exploring CNC's, by all means, it's a fantastic value to start with the 3020. You won't be making guitars or commercial signs at this size, but carving small signs, plaques, toys, parts, PCBs, home goods - there's lots to play with and learn! ... show more

Revision to previous review After initial problems, Arlen patiently walked me through the troubleshooting process and correctly diagnosed the issue - a faulty power supply. The machine is now working as intended, and I am looking forward to learning how to use it. I think the machine itself is worthy of a five-star review. Details provided below keeps it below that. 4.5 stars, but that's not an option is it? Previous review The condensed version – The machine looks and feels very solid and I am confident it will perform well once the bugs are worked out. The nicely-printed color manual is very sketchy and leaves out key details. Whoever prepped the motherboard needs to pay closer attention to what they are doing. The long version Unpacking and assembly went smoothly enough, but as mentioned, the instructions were sketchy. For instance, it would have been nice if they had mentioned that the two X-axis limit switches could be plugged into either of the two X-axis limit switch sockets (same with the Y and Z limit switches), but no, so I just plugged them in and hoped for the best. Instructions for the driver installation and COM port settings left out a key instruction, namely to connect the machine to the computer and turn it on. Fortunately a quick reference to the need to do that in someone’s unboxing video clued me in. Also, instructions in the manual for how to access the Device Manger were incorrect but I figured it out. Instructions for how to access settings to check the COM port settings were incorrect, leaving me to figure it out on my own. Necessary commands such as Unlock, Home, Zero XY, and Zero Z were represented by icons and not identified specifically. Only by hovering my cursor over the icons was I able to identify them. This was mentioned on the previous page, but an arrow or circle on the picture below the instructions would have been helpful. The instructions under “Make Your First Cut” failed to provide any instructions for mounting the bit. I just did what I made sense and, again, hoped for the best. In the Candle interface, I found I wasn’t able to move the bed (Y-axis). I was able to make sure the motor worked by plugging it into the X-axis socket, but could get no love from the Y-axis socket, so I emailed tech support. The next day I received an email from Arlen telling me to check to see if the driver chip was plugged into the Y1 or Y2 socket. Sure enough, it was in the Y2 socket, so whoever assembled it at the factory was not paying attention. Switching it to the Y1 socket gave me control of all axes. As directly as he got to this solution suggests to me that it is not an uncommon issue. Once positioning the bit and setting the zero point as instructed, I hit the Send button, but got various error messages - Error 9 and serial port errors. The troubleshooting section of the manual covered only 6 issues, so I sent another email to tech support. More to follow I guess. It’s really a shame they spent money printing such a slick, well-photographed, but sketchy and poorly-written manual. I am used to downloading manuals. It seems that it would make more sense for them to use this approach so they can make corrections and updates rather than leaving their clients with this mess. At the very least, they should have had an outsider go through the assembly and use processes to point out the issues, but it looks like the manual was written by someone who does not realize the importance of what he/she was leaving out. This is an entry-level machine, but Anolex assumes the user will be savvy enough figure things out on their own. I have been unable to find any dedicated support forum aside from the 134-member Facebook group. At this time I am waiting to hear back from tech support and am saving the box for return if it comes to that. ... show more
