  • Awesome!!!
Color: 13FT Tenkara Rod Kit
This pole is awesome I've never fly fished before because it seemed to be expensive and took some practice/skill to do butt this pole is super simple. I watched a bunch of videos then took a practice fly out in the yard setup a coffee can and started to practice before I new it i was able to pop that fly into the can with easy its all on the wrist. I like that the pole is all self contained i did get a line holder that attaches to the rod just above your hand so when collapsed you can just wind the line around it slip it in the tube and be on your way. I dont know that Ill every want to buy a fly rod I have several lengths and weights of tippet lines and most of the small streams and brooks I fish are tight quarters so your not able to cast a country mile anyway. I suppose on the bigger lakes you would want a fly rod too but the portability of this rod is awesome I would recommend trying one out especial if you already have the fly gear its quick to setup and be on the edge of in the water with 13 ft and a 12-16 ft tippet you can get a decent amount of distance and accuracy. I think its a great setup for beginners or pro's its just another style of fishing. ... show more

  • Rod is nice, but it's not a Tenkara rod
Color: 12FT Rod
I'll keep this short. The main difference between how tenkara and western fly rods cast is simple: Fly rods have a heavy line, which loads the system. Tenkara is the opposite, the line is super light, so the rod needs to be long and flexible - to load the line and cast properly. This rod is so stiff, it doesn't flex at all when casting. I caught about 40 trout on my first day using it, but I lost even more fish!! This is because the rod is so stiff, that when I set the hook, it just rips out of the trout's mouth. I've been fishing tenkara for over 30 years, so believe me when I say that this rod is not "tenkara" it's more of a keiru... but it's neither strong or long enough to be true keiru. This is a novelty fishing pole, because it's neither flexible enough to be true tenkara, nor does it fit into any category... it's too stiff for small fish and too brittle for big fish. Not saying you have to spend a ton of money for a good tenkara rod, but this rod is so stiff that even with a gentle "trout setting" of the hook, it easily rips out of their mouth. It's also too stiff when fighting the fish, it doesn't flex enough and fish escape very easily..When fighting the fish a flexible tenkara rod is best, because there's no reel to extend the line. Therefore the entire system depends on the flex of the rod to "give" the fish some line, to avoid ripping the hook from their mouth. After a 6 hour fishing session, my hands suffered severely from this rod. It's badly imbalanced, and caused severe pain in my hand and shoulder within the first hour of fishing. I pressed on for the remainder of the day, and now have inflammation in my thumb, wrist and shoulder. Considering that I'm a rock climber, my grip strength is considerably strong...and yet the rod still felt SUPER heavy and awkward. I would highly advise you look at alternative tenkara rods. My favorite cheap one is made by Aventik, but if you're willing to spend $100 or more - there are a ton of fantastic options. I would say that spending $40 more for a MUCH higher quality rod is definitely worth it. I cannot stress enough, this is not a tenkara rod ... show more

  • A tragic tale of woe and deprivation.
Well, I liked the rod, bless it’s heart. I suck at fly fishing, so I adopted the principle of “if you’re going to suck at something, do it simply and gracefully”. Tenkara is the way to go for simplicity. Much to my horror I discovered that I could cast about as far with my Tenkara as i can with a standard fly rod. The line was crappy so I bought some better line (cheap) and line discs instead of of the line keeper that comes with rod. It was the best Tenkara I’ve had to date. One of the telescoping segments jammed so I had to disassemble the rod and unjam it with a rubber mallet. One should also buy a good landing net, otherwise you will be thrashing around when you try to land a fish. Yesterday I drove down to Otter creek in the 35 degree weather. I caught a decent trout and brought it into my net. It was cool. The trout had swallowed my wooly bugger, so I was trying to humanely extricate the lure when the fish flipped out of the net. I had only a loose grip on the rod, so the fish pulled the rod out of my hand and into the current. These rods are quite light and they float well, so both rod and fish sped down the river as I looked on with mute terror. I took out after the ensemble, slipped in the water, filled up my waders with frozen water, and contemplated my demise for several moments. I won’t bore you with the details other than I lived to tell this tale as a caution to others. So I recommend this rod, although I’m going to spend a few more dollars and get a Dragontail next time. ... show more

  • Didn't receive everything
I only received one of the line clips for the rod. I hadn't looked until today when I finally am ready to use it 😞

  • good value
After borrowing a friend's tenkara rod (made by Tenkara Rod Co), I decided to buy this Angler's Dream rod at a fraction of the cost. Overall, I think it's as good as the more expensive version, and in some ways better. The downside is that some of the accessories are of poorer quality, but I'm ok with that. The rod telescopes smoothly and better than the more expensive rod. The hard case is fine, but the threading isn't great (some teflon tape around the threading on the cap helped). The more expensive Tenkara Rod Co setup has a nice wooden spool for the line, but this one does not. The lilian seems a bit short on the Angler's Dream rod, but that's not a big deal. Caught three fish on my first day with this Angler's Dream rod, so I'm happy! ... show more
