  • OBD2 Scan Tool
I am really thrilled with the depth of data this scan tool provides. It's going to take me a while to learn just how much it can actually do, but I already know it can read the ECM and TCM, and probably a few other modules, but I was already getting information overload on my old brain. I started out by just checking engine data on my 2011 GMC Sierra (40k) while idling in the driveway. Because I don't actually have any current problems, I was just navigating around randomly. Finding the fuel trims data was easy, so that's where I started. If you press the FN key for one or multiple data points, you can then graph them in real time to look for trends. This is pretty impressive for a low cost scan tool. The interface is pretty intuitive, and I was doing all of this with only a couple minutes experience...literally learning on the fly. The listing didn't show that it came in a hard case. So that was a nice surprise. It'll protect this from damage when not in use. The data cord is about 4 feet long, so it can comfortably be placed on the seat or console while reading, or even the passenger seat while driving. Because it is a detachable cord, I suspect that a longer cord could be added for more remote reach, like into the engine bay. UPDATE: To help me learn the navigation of the system, I wanted to take screen captures of all the screens, because that's what I do for a living. The manual says to long-press the Function button to take a screen capture (OK), but there is no information anywhere on how to access the images you have taken. To access the scanner as though it was a removable hard drive, you use nearly the same process as installing updates. Go to the Update screen, Select "Via USB", and then press OK to reboot the scanner in USB update mode. (You do not need to have the Update software running or even installed.) This just sets the scan tool to external drive mode. Then you can navigate to the directory titled "ScreenShot". ... show more

  • capable, but user interface needs work
The Ancel FX3300 Elite vehicle OBD scanner is capable, but had a frustrating user interface. The device itself is the size of a large gaming controller, with a 4” (100mm) diagonal color TFT display and five pushbutton controls, one of which is a directional rosette. The plastic case looks ruggedized, but that’s just an illusion – what appears to be a protective edge wrap isn’t rubber, just more molded plastic. The device does come with a very nice padded zippered case with additional room for the connecting cables and the cursory user manual. There is no power switch, it turns on automatically when connected (via detachable cables) to a vehicle’s On Board Diagnostic port, or using the supplied USB cable to power it for firmware updates. My spouse tried using the USB connection to connect to either a mobile phone or PC (more on that later), but neither device “saw” the Ancel scanner even as they supplied power to it. After updating the scanner firmware without incident, he tried the OBD scanner on three vehicles of various vintages, a 2002 Toyota Avalon, a 2007 Honda Ridgeline, and a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek. The newer the vehicle, the more extensive the communication and reporting from the Ancel scanner. For the Toyota, communication was limited to the engine and automatic transmission. For the Subaru, automatic vehicle identification worked flawlessly, and a more comprehensive analysis was given. The Honda was a mixed bag. The scanner offered a 10 minute "quick test", but complained that the Honda was "not in the database. Continue in Limited Mode. Press the OK button to continue.". Pressing the "OK" button did nothing. Does it need just a single touch, or does it require a longer press? Also, the OK button doesn't say "OK" on it - it's marked with a red square. Another session with this vehicle yielded only a locked up scanner. Eventually, it did show about a dozen DTC events. The scanner claimed to save a PDF file, but there was no way to get the file off the scanner and into some kind of readable form. Later, my spouse ran the diagnostic a third time and manually transcribed and cleared the trouble codes - all of which were tied to conditions that had long since been corrected. The upshot of this is that we recommend this if you have a newer vehicle. For an older vehicle, it can be frustrating to use. ... show more

  • Good Higher End Reader
This is a great compromise for someone who wants to do more than just read the basic codes, but doesn't want to spend several hundred to get a scanner that is of professional quality. I really appreciated the good quality hard case and it's ability to store all of the included pieces. It's all in there snug as a bug. The reader came alive after either plugging into a USB port or the OBDII port. You'll want to start by updating the unit. That did take quite a while for me (15-20 minutes). Once connected to my truck (Ram 1500), it was able to read all of the modules and see the issues. I was surprised how many codes there actually were. On all of the modules, there's the option to erase and for the most part, you can see the settings for them. Sadly, this is the limit of what you can do, on higher end readers, you can also change settings. Still, the ability to see and erase the codes is important. Of course this reader also had the ability to do basics like showing voltages and temperatures. It's also nice that this thing will fit into your car unobtrusively. In general, this is a nice mid-grade unit. Also, the fact that ANCEL has been around for several years and the fact that they provide lifetime updates is a HUGE thing to me. I've got a couple readers that are now kind of useless because the brand decided that the product was too old for support (only 3 years Foxwell!!!). Or because the brand wants to charge a hundred dollars to update. So, in my opinion, this reader is above and beyond a lot of brands just for that. ... show more

  • Nice scanner but not for most DIY'ers. You need "AUTO AUTH" membership for full function.
If you don't have an Auto Authorization membership, which you have to pay for and, have a business, you can't use many of the functions this scanner is supposed to have. The functions I was able to use work well but, you can get a scanner for well under $100 that will do the same thing. No point in paying all that money foe options you won't be able to use just because you don't work at an actual repair shop. ... show more
